Chris blew away my expectations. I'm a single digit handicap who hasn't received lessons before - but I know there is a lot for me to learn, and that's why I went to Chris. For starters, you can tell that he is so passionate about golf, and who doesn't want to learn from someone who truly loves the game? Second, he's extremely knowledgeable. He taught me more in one day than in the 7 years I've played golf. The swing from the ground up is truly something every single golfer should learn - it's the only way to really understand why the ball is flying the way it does, and if you know what the swing is actually doing, you can identify what is going wrong when it is. This is key to being very good at this game, and I highly recommend any golfer of any skill level to Chris - he will teach you something you don't know that may make a huge difference. This won't be my last time seeing him.

I am a pretty good amateur player (0.1 Handicap) and was looking for a swing coach to help me improve consistency. Thus far, I have taken 1 lesson with Tony but even from that one lesson I can see big improvement. Tony has a good eye for what changes need to be made and then shows you your flaws on video. He also used trackman so you can see all the stats from your swings, which is very helpful. I also like how Tony simplified what changes needed to be made and how to make them and then provided me drills to take to the range.

I've been working with Chris over the last year. We've focused on a plan that allowed me to move from a 10 handicap down to 5.5. Much of the improvement happened through a building block approach beginning with grip, swing path, and using my core. But the key that sets him apart is that he is an exceptional communicator. He truly wants to make sure you understand and can retain his messages. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn how to play golf the rest of their life!

I am not an avid golfer but enjoy the outdoors and the challenge. I have taken many lessons over the past 30 years of trying to play golf. I have general knowledge of how to play but with Bobby's help I have moved to another level and feel more confident in my game. He was able to work with me, sometimes stepping back and taking a new approach but always remained encouraging. I have continued to use and will continue to use Bobby.

Greg Boyd turned out to be a great golf instructor. I saw his ad posted in Humble, Tx at a Golf Range that I frequent and decided to call. Turns out I learned a whole lot in just my first lesson. I will tell my friends who also play golf about him.

Robert is genuinely interested in providing the best golf instruction for me as a student. He has the ability and talent to explain simple concepts, as well as more advanced techniques. Robert accomplishes all these tasks with great initiative and with a positive attitude. He is a person with a concrete, ongoing, and well-rooted interest in expanding his teaching abilities. He also has a wonderful rapport with people of all ages as demonstrated by his being named the Southern Texas PGA Youth Development Award winner for the 2017 year.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

    How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

    • Individual lessons:
      • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
      • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
    • Couples’ lessons:
      • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
      • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
    • Golf lesson package pricing:
      • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
      • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
      • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
      • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.
