What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Here are some examples of floor installation costs, depending on the material:

Is it worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist?

Unless you have plenty of experience installing the type of floor you want, it is worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist.

The first reason is tools — pros have them, and they know how to use them. Without the proper experience, there is a high risk of injury with nail guns and power saws. A good pro also works quickly, saving you time that you could spend doing other things.

Finally, a pro gets you past options paralysis by helping you decide the best flooring for different rooms and areas of the home.

I needed engineered bamboo flooring installed over the weekend. The team at Texas Wood Flooring gave me a very affordable quote and installed the floors beautifully. They removed my old carpet and hauled it away. Leveled the floor and stayed as late as possible to complete the project. My family is very happy with the new floor!

Robert was a professional and did an excellent job on the project. He worked on our curved stairs and upstairs playing area. Robert took the time to explain the different types of wood that works best for our house, he brought samples to show us the different colors and how it matches the floors we had downstairs. He proceeded to completing the project and finished as promised. Will recommend him to anyone looking to install wood floors.

Willie and team were great from day one! They installed wood tile on 80% of our home, I was very nervous about the job being done correctly. Willie guided me and gave suggestions on what would look best in our home. When they finished the project, I inspected it, called Willie about a few areas I wasn't comfortable with, he immediately called his team and they came to fix it! We are very happy with our tile, and will definitely have him redo the remaining 20% of our floors!!! Thank you Willie!

Antonio did the majority of the work before another person joined him on the last day to help close things out. He arrived early the first day and immediately set to work. By the end of the day, the carpet was completely removed and packed into his truck (~600 sq. ft. of it) and the self-leveling compound was down and practically cured. The second day he got through most of the floor. He was diligent, but didn't mind being stopped occasionally so we could ask questions or admire the flooring as it went in. He gave us direct instructions on when it could support weight, how long the glue would take to cure for the transition strips, and how to clean the floor. On the third day, he was joined by another individual who helped him close out items (final installation in the bedroom and cutting/setting quarter-round). They did very well all around. The quarter-round looks like it was installed with the baseboards - totally seamless. They also did a nice job in the corners, and where the cabinetry (which is stained instead of painted white like the baseboards) exists, they stain-matched the quarter-round. They also recommended not orienting the boards 90 degrees from the hallway as it entered the bedroom, as that would result in an unnecessary transition strip (and a potential trip hazard). They were right on the money with that recommendation. At the end of every day, the workspace and house was cleaned. Antonio's a humble, hard-working guy. Management even came out at one point just to check on progress and answer any questions. All around, this was our first experience with having a new floor installed. It was a big project and we shopped around, speaking with many flooring contractors. Texas Wood Flooring was the only one who didn't press us to hire them. Since they were professional in their initial dealings and because their visit to our home was positive, we hired them. We are glad we did and do recommend their service.

I can highly recommend Willy. I am very happy with the job he did installing wood floors in my two master closets. He answered my inquiry very quckly and called me straight away. I described the job over the phone, we agreed on a price and he showed up right on time the next day. Willy is very professional and experienced. He stayed late to complete the job in one day and did excellent work. Although this was a small job I would feel very confident in Willy handeling any size remodeling project. Thanks for the great job Willy!
