Marc and his team did an amazing job at our wedding on March 5. Marc went above and beyond to make my day special. He rented a bar from a third party and handled all the transport and fees for it in advance so we wouldn't have to worry. He even met us at the venue prior to the rehearsal dinner and helped our wedding coordinator figure out the table layout. His staff was so friendly and kind to everyone at the wedding and even helped clean up beyond their catering duties. We had the lemon garlic chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus and I'm still hearing compliments about how good it all was, especially how juicy the chicken was. If we ever have another event, we now have a go to guy in Marc from Tatering Catering!

Luke did a great job catering a sit-down dinner for my daughter's bachelorette weekend. He responded to my initial inquiry promptly and was easy to communicate with via e-mail and text as we planned the menu. The girls wanted to float around the pool and enjoy a few adult beverages during the day, but wanted a restaurant-quality meal that evening without having to worry about dressing up or driving. Luke arrived promptly and served a great meal with a choice of lamb chops or filet mignon as the primary proteins. The meal included a sushi appetizer, salads & sides, and a yummy dessert of creme brulee. He cooked, cleaned, and rolled with the punches with this rowdy group of 8 ladies and they all had a great time and enjoyed the meal. We will definitely hire Luke again for other dinner parties at the house.

Our first experience with Chef Cassy was fantastic! Her service, her food and her attention to my client's was above admirable. We especially appreciated her meal preparation. The food was extremely good, with all of the little touches one expect from a chef, not from a catering experience. We have already contracted with Chef Cassy for our next event and are planning on contracting with her deep into the future. It's five stars from Tom and Tammy Holland and THE Group, Inc. Thanks Chef!

I reached out to Jim through Thumbtack for a quote for catering our wedding reception. Within hours Jim replied with all the details I needed. Within days Jim had sent us all of his paperwork including his insurance papers, permits, menu and itemized invoice, all while we were still waiting on call-backs from "friend-of-a-friend" "caterer-on-the-side types." People who, no doubt, didn't have any of these permits or insurance or even realized they need them to work in some venues. Planning this thing was filled with indecision, date changes and even a venue change. We actually contacted 2 other cateres and NEVER GOT A REPLY. Through it all Jim was calm, accommodating and flexible. All i ever got from this guy was "no problem" and " I'll take care of it." After all was said and done we decided to cancel the reception. But I was so taken with Jim's level of professionalism and service that I felt compelled to send him something anyway. We both felt such a sense of relief and peace once we had him booked, and that's priceless. I'd like to also share one note with anyone who may have reservations about having bbq at a wedding reception, as my fiance did at first. If you're concerned that there will be bbq sauce everywhere and it will get all over your guests' hands and clothes, please don't be. Jim offers a wide assortment of meats and his food isn't prepared or served swimming with bbq. We were looking forward to serving our guests a real, bonafide, down home, stick-to-your-ribs MEAL, and not some bougie over-priced veggie platter or dry-ass chicken breast-broccoli dinner. In fact not having had the opportunity to have Jim's food was the only disappointing thing about cancelling our reception. But if his food is anywhere near the level of his service and professionalism we were in for quite an amazing experience. I will definitely have him top of mind for any event needing a caterer in the future.

Chef Jared came through for me BIG TIME! I called him on a Tuesday night at 6:00pm for a catering event on Wednesday at 11:30am for 35 people! Chef Jared came through with BBQ none the less. We had so many compliments from our customers on the food alone. We have his number now and we will definitely will be using Chef Jared for all of our business events along with some personal events.

I worked with Nina & Robbie on a catering event in Dallas for an outdoor event during the summer. The event had over 500 people and Spiced Lavender Catering was highly organized throughout the whole process! Everyone raved about the succulent grilled pork chops and they made it very simple for guests to eat and enjoy. They also served a refreshing hibiscus tea that was on point during the heat of a Texas summer, people bought it by the gallon! The food and drink that was served to the guests was perfectly delicious for the event, and the professionalism was absolutely the best when it comes to doing business. Definitely worth the experience Nina and her team brought to the table as the guests are delighted and happy, that's what it's all about right?

I can't say enough good things about Provisions Catering (Kim)! Our guests could not stop talking about the amazing food, as well as the presentation. Kim and Carly arrived a few hours early and set everything up before the guests arrived...it was beautiful. They continued refreshing and cleaning all night. At the end of the night, everything was packed away into containers, dishes were done, and my kitchen was once again spotless. If you want a caterer that delivers everything promised and more, choose Provisions!

We asked Missy to cater our breakfast and lunch for a film shoot. And she went above and beyond. I had to make a bunch of changes in a short time frame because we were still in the planning stages of our shoot trying to figure out how many people to feed etc. and she handled it like a rock star! She showed up early, stayed within my budget, and made sure everyone was happy. She cleaned up after breakfast and lunch. She even brought Tupperware so we could take home the leftovers. Couldn't have been happier with the experience. Definitely, hire her if you need a caterer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
