Daniel was on time and very informative. We knew the minimal cost for the repair before he showed up and he even agreed to waive the service call out fee should we decide to have the AC fixed. The system was thoroughly evaluated and leak checked due to no cooling and he got us back on line. He even agreed to credit back some of the cost of adding freon which we incurred should we need to replace a component later. Before he left he did a second leak check. I highly recommend his services and my husband will add to his list as the number one preferred contractor for HVAC repairs as a fellow business owner in Katy and the surrounding area. Service Pro's upfront approach was perfect, no need to change anything.

I worked with CJ and he was very professional, prompt, responsive and very knowledgeable. The prices they charge for repairs is higher than other HVAC contractors but he does quality work and explained everything including how other contractors will charge less because they take short cuts which can lead to issues and more costs down the road. In our case that's what happened with some of the repairs we previously had on the AC condenser that we ended up having to have CJ replace. Overall, I am satisfied with the work they did and would consider using again.

Roberto contacted me with a very honest and reasonable quote up front. Unlike other contractors would usually jack up the price first just to take their chance then later on dropping the price because the customer is getting bids from other people. Deluxe central air didn't just replaced the coil and the outdoor unit for me but also installed three flood shut off switches for me which I didn't know it's better to have. Even though one of the employee made a tiny mistake of the assembly of the pipes but Roberto soon took the responsibility and came to fix it next day first thing in the morning plus added freon into my other unit without charge as compensation. It's hard to find people that do business like them nowadays. I highly recommend these guys to everybody.

The owner, Gary, and his team were just amazing. The18 year old a/c that had been running the second floor had to be replaced. Gary came immediately and together we worked out which brand and type of equipment I would be comfortable with including some improvements of the existing system. The quote was very competitive. Two days later Gary himself and three more of his team came and installed the new system. Man, were they efficient! Four super focused guys that all knew what they were doing. In the afternoon everything was completed - plug and play. I am the owner of ten properties so I have experienced many contractors, but I very seldom find contractors that are this good. I really can recommend Hagen Mechanical Solutions.

Bad fan board on the downstairs AC blower. Great communication on arrivals and status. Checked both systems and found no "problems" to run up the bill. Great, honest contractor. Will definitely use them again when necessary.

I have used Air Trends on several occasions to inspect my heating and cooling systems on a yearly basis. The owner James has always been on time and very professional. He was very respectful of my home and gave me an open and honest review of my HVAC systems. He never tried to sell me something I didn't need and gave me all my options in ref to things that needed to be repaired right away, in the future or not at all. This was all done at a fair price. I will always use Air Trends for my heating and cooling services.

Tyrone is a pleasure to work with ,he was very quick to respond and very knowledgeable in his field. He explained the problems related to my unit and went the extra mile by having a parts shop open up for me on their day off. He noticed that my tenants had a baby and he did everything in his power to make sure the system ran over the weekend for them. Then he came back out on Monday to add another part that would guarantee that the system would not burn out again at no charge!! I am very happy with the quality of work performed and the great bedside manner applied towards my tenants. I will recommend Tyron Anderson to any and everyone looking for an honest hardworking professional with superior knowledge of AC& Heating Systems.

Richard was hired as a subcontractor for a variety of work on my house. His task was mainly sheetrock and ceiling repair. He did an awesome job! Richard was professional, courteous, and honest about what he did and why. If a problem arose, he was prompt in informing me and offered a variety of options to mitigate the issue. He went above and beyond by encouraging the contractor to go get parts from Houston rather than waiting the 10-14 days for them to be delivered locally (as an aside, I am still waiting on the contractor to come finish installing the shower in my master bath) When I am ready to do more work on the house, I will be calling Richard rather than the original contractor.

I hired Gary to replace/install 2 commercial doors on my warehouse which he did very well, but in the process I gave him a variety of other jobs that needed to be done such as hanging the ceiling in my office, fix the lock, fix some structural problems, wire lights, build a louvre box for my exhaust fan and I must say I was thouroughly impressed with his professionalism and very high quality of his work, his punctuality, and excellent communication. He is definitely a jack of all trades and I would highly recommend him to a friend or a family member. Also, it is worth mentioning that his prices are very reasonable and will not break your budget.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

      What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

      • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
      • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
      • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
      • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
        • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
      • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
        • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
      • Your home has humidity problems.
      • Your home has excessive dust.
        • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
      • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
        • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
      • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
        • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
