This was my first session. Joey knows what he's talking about. I've seen other nutritionists before but they always gave me literature and left me on my own. Joey showed me the facts behind what he was asking me to do. It's not going to be easy but makes sense. If you're looking for a professional to help with nutrition Joey is your man.

Curtis has shown me the proper way to grocery shop, proper way to eat and balance out my meals. He is always showing me the proper techniques on weight & cardio training. All the information, topics discussed on his talk show & discussions during training are a tremendous amount of help. I've learned so much from Curtis in under 6 months than I've ever learned in my lifetime of seeing nutritionist, gym trainers, doctors, other weight loss groups recommendations and guidance. I keep learning something new every time and I love the fact that I'm pushed and challenged everyday!!! I'm happy with my results and can't wait to see where this journey takes me with Curtis as my trainer. I highly recommend Curtis to help you out on your journey to healthy and getting fit!!!

Rebecca was kind, knowledgeable and encouraging. I went to see her after a 40 lb weight loss and I had been experiencing a plateau with no weight loss in a few months. She got me back on track and gave me some great meal plans and ideas and followed up with me after my appointment. She's an excellent nutritionist and has helped me get back on track!

I worked with Susan back when she was in Maryland. My main motivation was weight loss. I was getting pretty bad, so I decided to see a nutritionist. Susan takes a very unique, fun, and creative approach to nutritional consultation. She is very patient and explains things in ways that non-nutritionally inclined people such as myself can understand. As a result of her meal plans, exercise recommendations, guidance and expertise, I have lost a total of 100 lbs to date. I cannot recommend Susan highly enough!

I absolutely loved working with Candace. She took a real interest in me and my goals. She took the time to tailor a complete nutrition plan that fit my life and schedule. Suddenly, something that I thought was difficult or that I struggled with was incredibly easy. Thanks to Candace, I was able to understand what my body needed and how to get it. I could not recommend Candace highly enough. I trust her completely and have even told all my friends and family about her. You can never take your health too seriously, and Candace gets that.

June is very caring and listens to her clients health concerns. She tries to help address the whole body to find what has caused the health concern. I have been to other nutritionist and none of them have been able to address my health concerns like June has. I highly recommend her.

Ellie is AWESOME!!! I’m in my fifties and began to struggle with my weight. By the time I contacted Ellie I felt such shame so it was imperative I work with a compassionate and empathetic individual. She made it clear from day one there was no judgment. I felt motivated after our sessions as she was extremely encouraging and knowledgeable. Ellie worked with me on meal planning and also took me on a grocery store tour to ensure the knowledge I learned translated to real life application. I highly recommend Ellie as her professionalism, expertise, and compassion are qualities I value in a nutritionist and coach.

I enlisted Laura to help improve my eating habits and couldn't be happier with the results. From the start, Laura's professional demeanor and personal touch made me comfortable that I was in good hands. I would, and have, recommended her to many people. Bonus: while my needs where pretty basic, Laura has several years working on dietetic issues at a NYC hospital.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
