    (34 reviews)

I have a rare combination of many years being self-taught and a university degree. I understand the struggles and frustrations from all angles. Of course, this doesn't change the primary truth of accomplishing anything - the only way you get there is to do the work. But I have a lot of insight into the problems a person may face along various parts of their journey, and can help them overcome, whether it's gaps in their knowledge from no theory or lack of improvisational and compositional confidence from only being able to play what's on the page. I love teaching, and I love those moments when a student makes realizations in class or comes to me saying "Let me show you what I learned since I saw you last!"

Many teachers that I know might be great at what they do but do not intentionally think about how break it down in a simple way that a beginner would understand. I think about how to thoroughly explain concepts. I have a clear plan of what I want to accomplish and teach my students in every lesson. I set deadlines for them to meet to encourage discipline in their study of music. I just love interacting with my students. They all have such unique stories and personalities that they each bring something different to the music. I can't think of a better way to encourage a student than to see them weekly and give them your undivided attention. My students are much more than just a job for me, they are people that I look forward to seeing progress and succeed in more than just music.

I take a physiological approach to singing... after all it is a physical endeavor. The voice or larynx, despite all its complexities, is just another set of muscles that can be trained to reach its fullest potential. The method that I teach, “The Franco/Italian Bel Canto Method” has been taught in Europe for more than 200 years and has produced the world’s greatest classical singers. Now having said that let me assure you studying this method doesn’t mean that you have to become a classical singer. The techniques used are designed to strengthen and improve the quality of the human voice and can be applied to any genre whether your goal is “Broadway” “American Idol” or just to improve your voice for you own personal satisfaction. The method also addresses all things associated with singing, such as breathing and breath control. I have been singing and teaching for over 30 years both professionally and for my own enjoyment. Singing is my passion, it is what I do. I have found that teaching someone to sing is perhaps one of the most rewarding things I do.

Each individual student has a unique way of learning. I have devised a program that draws on cognitive learning principals to learn music faster, understand concepts easier, facilitate on the instrument better and meet each students' individual goals, while maintaining a fun environment and fostering creative expression. I love embarking on the journey of self discovery with others and empowering people to unlock their full potential. Most people don't realize the vastness of music, how it translates into life circumstances or how much they can accomplish so, watching the "light bulb" moments as they piece the parts of the musical puzzle together is pretty amazing.

Herod Enterprises

What do you love about your job?

I am a private music instructor and a public school music educator. Both jobs require patience, skill, and interpersonal skills that make a difference in the lives of students everyday! Many of our students will never experience anything musical outside of the walls of my classroom or be able to afford private music lessons. This is what I love about my job. You can never experience an Opera, symphony, or hear beautiful music if not for what I teach!

Describe your most memorable project.

When I was teaching at an elementary school, it was very low performing academically, and I began a "stomp" team like the Stomp out loud video that had been so popular with all my classes, to encourage academic achievement. The idea had been done in the upper levels, but never in elementary. My first team consists of about 10 or 12 students and within 3 years, it grew to 85 or so with 4th, 5th and 6th graders. We were sponsored by Home Depot 3 times with brooms and trash cans as well as various assorted props to play. We were invited to perform for schools, colleges, and many other events.
