I contacted several moving companies within the San Antonio area, this was the best company at the fairest price I found. Marcel and his team did an outstanding job! He took the time to organize all of my belongings before his crew loaded the trucks. They took the upmost care and did no damage to any of my property. The total job was very streamlined and handled in the upmost professional manner compared to other companies that I have dealt with in the past. I highly recommend this company and would refer them to any of my friends and family! I want to personally thank you Marcel and your staff for the outstanding job in completing my move! In all sincerity, Walt Smith

Great Experience! I was really stressing about this move out of state, but they made it is so simple and stress-free. I was charged a much better rate than other moving companies I looked up, but it was well worth the search. Even better, they handled my furniture/tvs/ appliances and other items very diligently. Thank You My Moving Pal!

I hired Good Guys movers to move a curio cabinet for me, it was too big for me to move alone. They showed up on time and did a great job moving it. They even went the extra mile to remove the remaining packaging and to make sure it was set up and ready to go. I will definitely recommend them to anyone that needs movers.

Rhett & his sons were AMAZING. I didn't feel awkward talking he made me feel at ease. I've moved several times in my life, using friends to move furniture. Never again. With Dump Stars nothing was broken no furniture was damaged, the kids were polite and Rhett was a joy. In my opinion he should charge more for his service. I will definitely recommend him to my friends on their next move. Thank you Dump Stars Moving Company...

Big Man Repairs and More

This company perfectly illustrated why hiring local help is superior to the services provided by larger regional or corporate organizations. As a small business, Big Man Repairs maintains great customer service at its center. There is nothing like "skin in the game" to heighten attention to customer needs. At every turn, I was delighted by the level of initiative, steady and timely communication, and amazing flexibility that I experienced. When I first contacted Big Man Repairs, I requested three grown men to help unload a 26 foot Penske truck, and that I needed an appliance dolly for moving a large refrigerator, washer, and dryer. Three experienced grown men conducted my move-in and a new heavy duty dolly was used to safely move my appliances. I also stipulated that safety for the movers and protection of the furniture, doorways, and walls were priorities. My movers arrived with extra moving blankets that they used to protect my belongings and the surfaces of the house. These great movers finished unloading the truck in less time than I expected (they know what they are doing, so they are expedient). So next, they offered to help place some of the large furniture pieces, using Teflon sliders to protect the floors (and their own backs - which made me happy!). My family was still in transit on the day of the move, so we had to keep moving our estimated time of arrival (and, hence, the start time for the move). At intervals over two days, the owner called or texted to check in and adjust our agreed upon schedule. He was so accommodating that it made the inevitable delays less stressful. There was never any discussion about charging me for the changes, and he was pleasant and thoughtful throughout. Several times, because of his extensive experience, he asked about things I had not considered. In this way, we covered all the bases and were completely prepared when the job began. I negotiated what I believed was a fair price for the entire job. And because the moving team "owned" the job, it was well managed and, as I watched them work, my confidence in them grew. I learned that each man on this team has experience in other areas, such as lawn maintenance, landscaping, carpentry, and general handyman skills. Without a doubt, I will be calling on each of them again to help with other tasks. Anyone considering a difficult moving event or transport of heavy and precious belongings can have absolute confidence in the service they will receive from the Big Man business.

This is a really great moving company that exceeded our expectations in every single possible way. My husband did quite a lot of research with several moving companies, read reviews online, talked to people at work who had moved recently, etc. From the moment that Great Nation did our estimate, we felt confident that they would get our business, we found everyone to be honest, respectful and trustworthy and their price was extremely competitive. Their movers arrived on time and professionally packed all our stuff into their truck. William their driver was very helpful and clear, he gave us a spread for a delivery date which they kept. The long-haul driver and team were excellent. Everything arrived in Boston with all of our belongings intact, nothing missing or damaged. We highly recommend this company and their workers who managed to make us feel at ease during what would otherwise have been a super stressful move across the country. Top notch company, that took care of our furniture pictured below. ZERO DAMAGE~!

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

We had a terrible experience on a previous move and were hesitant to move with a small moving company. We did some research and Amerapex had a 5 star rating so decided to book our move with them. By far the best move we've ever had. They took care of everything. They showed up on time, helped pack some last minute stuff and were so friendly and professional. Highly recommend!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
