Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Tau movers might be good for moving a refrigerator or a couple of furniture pieces but they are rookies for whole house moves. I just moved from AZ and it was a fabulous move! It took three guys four long days which included 3 Uhauls, packing up a 3600 square ft house, 12 hours of driving, unloading some to our tiny rental and the rest to a storage facility. On the other hand, Tau took two half-days with 3 guys for this move which included very little packing, and was only two doors down from the tiny rental and it cost me almost a third as much as the AZ move. Just get an EXACT BID IN WRITING OF EXACTLY WHAT HE WILL DO FOR WHAT AMOUNT. Oh and after they left today we found a whole storage room they didn’t empty! I would NEVER recommend Tau Movers for whole house moves!

We had another wonderful experience with Joseph and John from Tau Movers today. We are getting ready to move out of our home and needed some very heavy furniture moved from our upper floor to our garage. Tau movers did such a great job. They listened to our needs and concerns, and made everything work!

I was very shocked with CnR movers when my plan changed because my bishop wanted to help me move my things instead of paying CnR movers, the guy in charge at CnR movers, got really angry with me for the change of plans than THREATENED me “to make things right or I’m sending my lawyer after you for breach of contract.” The crazy thing about this is that I didn’t hire him so how can I breach a contract for me to be threatened? It doesn’t make sense how CnR movers makes his business decisions based on his feelings on threatening potential or future customers for not working with him. It’s the new year 2020 my hope for CnR is to work on his temperament and not angry at customers for changing their mind.

I was having a hard time with my moving plan due to the unforseen problem that my title company had with the seller, thus my moving time frame became very uncertain and frustrating. Giovanni was very helpful and responsive to my needs and was able to schedule me in within a very short notice. The move was within 50 miles from and to a 3-bedroom townhouse with a stop to pick up a sofa along the way. At first I thought that the 3-hours minimum of 2 movers were sufficient for us since we did not have too many big items. But apparently we had too many small items that it took around 4 1/2 hours to finish the loading/unloading. The 2 movers assigned to help me were very friendly and helpful. They were very considerate with all of my stuffs and always ask politely whenever they were not sure where to put them. I am glad that I hired them and was so satisfied with their service that I ended up asking for them to help me move my washer and dryer on the next couple of days. Giovanni was able to help me move them himself on the same day I was calling which was very awesome! Would recommend them and will definitely be my first option to go to if I ever need any help moving again.

Mandell and his crew at Smiths Moving Company were an amazing help for our across-town move. We hired them to move the big stuff and some boxes and they went beyond and loaded all the little stuff as well. Because of a great loading job we were able to get much more on the trucks than we expected. It was a hot day and they kept up the pace through the heat. I don't know what we would have done if we hadn't hired them. Although we will NEVER move again, if we did, I would definitely hire this crew again.

They were awesome! I had an old spinet piano moved, as well as some couches and my king size mattress and box spring. They were quick, careful, and professional. They were also quite jovial, which helped during a stressful moving day. Thanks again!!

The two men were personable and professional. I was impressed that they requested to see the exercise equipment before moving it, to see what they may need and to evaluate the best route out of the house to their truck. I followed them to the home where they were delivering it to be sure the residents had a space prepared and ready. They, too, were impressed, especially when the men asked if they should remove their shoes! (Which the resident did not require.). I highly recommend Tau Movers to anyone who wants knowledgeable, strong and amiable movers.

The team that came from Red Barn for our move was absolutely incredible. They took time to understand all of the items we needed moved, updated us throughout the process, asked clarifying questions, and were generally friendly to chat with while we were getting it all done! Unloading was also great - not only did they take things to the assigned rooms but offered to move things around if we didn’t like exactly where they were. I had even mislabeled a piece of furniture but they had remembered me saying where I wanted it so they double checked with me! They helped unload my car that had some additional bags in it. Then they saw we happened to have a treadmill box and asked if we would like help moving it to the spot it was going to go. They had incredible integrity, were fun, professional, and to top it off I knew I was supporting an organization that does a lot of good for a lot of people. Everyone should use Red Barn Movers!

I thought I was getting two guys but four came. I was charged for three. They were only moving our large furniture so it was limited. They did ok but were slacking at times and didn’t wrap up the furniture.
