How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. They may also offer 30-minute lessons for a lower price. Or, they might require monthly tuition for ongoing classes. It depends on the voice coach.

Contact vocal instructors near you to get a sense of how much singing lessons cost in your area.

Do singing lessons actually work?

Yes, many students who’ve taken singing lessons say that their singing has gotten better. To find out if voice coaches near you have successfully taught others how to sing, read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.

How many singing lessons do I need?

It depends on what you’re hoping to accomplish with your singing lessons. Consult a highly rated vocal instructor to determine how many lessons you should take — and how often you should take them.

How can I find a good voice teacher?

Use Thumbtack to find a good, top-rated voice teacher near you. With Thumbtack, you can view the teachers’ profiles, read their client testimonials and check their ratings. What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

Where can you get singing lessons?

You can receive singing lessons from a vocal instructor or voice coach on Thumbtack. Some instructors offer virtual lessons, while others may require you to come into a studio for instruction.

EJ is such a great, enthusiastic voice teacher! I had never taken any sort of voice lessons, so I was a bit nervous, but EJ had me jump right in and made me feel totally comfortable.

Suzanne is a dream to work with. She is just as excited about my lessons as I am: she sends me songs, celebrates my successes and opportunities, and teaches a great combination of style and skill which makes me much more comfortable with my voice. I am totally new to voice lessons, but I am convinced that she would be just as great for a seasoned performer as well.

I've only taken 2 or 3 lessons with her but I've already noticed a vast improvement in my voice and my understanding of how my voice works! She's really great and very knowlegable! We're even preparing for live performances so that's a really exciting bonus to work with her!

My daughter loves her lessons with Suzanne. She used to be shy about singing, and now she sings opening all the time and has auditioned for 2 musicals and gotten parts in both of them at a local theatre. I highly recommend Suzanne as a voice coach.

Emily is a professional singer and vocal teacher. She has a wonderful personality and is always willing to hear your concerns and wishes about lessons. I have been taking vocal classes in Emily's studio for almost 6 months. Before this I have never been taught to sing in my chest voice but I have always dreamed to sing like contemporary pop-rock singers. Emily helped me to develop and train my chest voice and singing skills and to me it was amazing and a great achievement. I was very happy to participate in the concert where a lot of her vocal students were singing contemporary hits. She is very talented, professional, and friendly. She teaches people of any age and interest in music. She made me believe in my voice! I highly recommend her to you if you want to train your voice and ear.

I started voice lessons a few weeks ago with EJ Michael’s, and I’m blown away by my progress. Prior to working with him, I’d never had voice lessons before, but I’d purchased several online courses through Udemy and watched online tutorials on youtube, and I was frustrated and unsure about how to progress. It’s hard to put into words just how amazing it is to work with someone who is so professional, kind and encouraging and knows the latest cutting edge vocals techniques and can teach and demonstrate how to sing anything you want to sing. He’s an incredible singer, songwriter, and producer who is can sing as well if not better my favorite artists, and even though he’s extremely busy at times touring the world as the lead singer of his band Foreign Figures, performing and giving inspirational live performances and talks at schools and venues like TEDx Salt Lake City, he somehow manages to pour an incredible amount energy into helping his students to achieve their goals. I studied classical piano for 8 years while I was growing up, and I've always had a pretty nice voice. I played the piano professionally for church for years, and but for some reason, I had the misconception that you’re stuck with the voice you’re born with and until very recently I didn't know it was possible to build muscle memory in my voice with vocal exercises. I can't believe how much range, control and power I've gained in less than a month of doing the exercises every day and having weekly lessons with EJ Michels. I finally feel like I'm building the tools I need to make music I love because I have my whole voice to work with, not just a limited range. It feels so good because for the first time in 20 years or so, I feel like I’m making real progress, having fun and enjoying my life. The money I’ve spent on lessons with EJ Michels is hands down the best money I’ve ever spent pursuing my goals in music, and I can’t say enough good things about him.

I've only been working with Deanna a few short weeks, but I have been very impressed not only with her professionalism, but also her ability. She has a powerful voice, and I haven't even heard it to its full capacity. Seeing as she focused mainly on classical and musical theater, it was an easy choice for me to attend a first lesson with her. She's very good at reading what people are ready for, and I'm very grateful to have her guidance in helping me discover my voice instead of being left to my own. She is very easy to communicate with both about what you would like to achieve and about arranging things such as lessons. She doesn't leave you wondering about where you stand. She's an excellent example of you get what you pay for. I'm not saying there aren't instructors who are more affordable, but I am saying I trust her talent, and that is worth not just my money, but the time I'm spending there. Definitely give her a try.

I've taken voice lessons from a few different instructors and Emily was hands down the best. She helped me to learn how to use my entire body to sing powerfully and safely in any genre. She also helped me to see the differences in each genre we attempted. I always felt that she truly wanted to see me succeed, she didn't act as though I was just another student. Finally she was very kind, accepting and understanding which is exactly what I was looking for in a teacher. I would highly recommend her.

It’s been one of my all time dreams to learn how to sing. Once I came across Paul, I knew for a fact he was the man to teach me. He takes the time to get to know you first before anything and makes sure that your seeing results within the first session, even if it’s as small as learning how to control your breathing properly! He gets into the very last detail to make sure your satisfied with his lessons. Paul is a really amazing voice coach. He’s able to really help someone like me who has had no professional teaching and help me, on the first day, to learn how to control my breathing and opening up my voice. He really takes the time to make sure that you understand what he’s trying to teach you. He makes every accomadation possible as long as your serious to learn. Just like me I was very serious to learn and he made sure I was satisfied or saw something different in the way I first started out in singing. I highly suggest anyone whose willing to learn how to sing to learn from Paul.
