I am a careful teacher who listens closely to her students in order to diagnose and correct vocal dysfunction. I continue to take voice lessons myself, so I can always stay on top of my own instrument. As a teacher, I cultivate a good rapport with students of all ages utilizing my personality and love, all while teaching autonomy and how to strive for greatness. I draw from my knowledge of what does and does not work for many types of students and their learning style. I utilize my schooling, continued education, and many years of experience in training musicians, some who have gone on to earn bachelors and masters degrees in music, perform professionally all over the world, and now teach students of their own. With your commitment, concentration, effort, and most of all, at home practice, you will progress nicely along the road you have chosen. Add your work to my work, and there’s no stopping your quest in becoming the very best musician you can be. One of my favorite parts of being an independent music teacher is working daily with excitement and adoration with little children. These young ones are fearless with minds like sponges, so they easily learn correct foundations of singing and piano technique. Many vocal teachers are afraid to teach young children in a formal setting and will hold off until they are pre-teens. After studying the young child’s voice through the Suzuki style of singing and teaching hundreds of children as young as four years old, I have the philosophy that children are born with a healthy singing voice, and they can be used safely under the guidance of a loving and fun teacher. Teenagers seem to love musical theater music and it happens to be my passion. I have coached the vocal music for over a dozen musicals. I can help you prepare for musical theater auditions with just the right song and staging suggestions. Many of my former students have had lead roles in school and community shows.

FSFMA Voice Studio is the #1 in providing singing lessons. What does it take to dramatically improve a singing voice? Or a better question might be: What would it take for you to be able to really sing with confidence and freedom? I have helped children and adults from all around Utah go from being frustrated to finally experience that incredible, life-transforming feeling of being able to express their voice, with real confidence and freedom. Perhaps you have encountered the standard advice, such as "sing from your stomach", "stand with good posture", "feel as if you're yawning", "use breath control", "sing through your mask", etc.? Sometimes that's great advice! Other times, it couldn't be further from the truth. You should discover what the difference is and how you or your child can become a master of his/her own voice! My task, if you would like my help, is to get you to experience what it's like when your voice soars like it's never soared before and to achieve freedom in singing and feel absolutely great while doing it! There is a way to actually have a free voice, with shimmering vibrato, amazing tone, and confidence to top it off. Moreover, we don't just stop at teaching amazing vocals — there's more to performing than that. One of the things that our students are always talking about is how comfortable they are on stage! (Believe me, they were as terrified as anyone could believe when they began.) This includes how to really perform a piece, rather than just sing it, and the best microphone technique, and of course, you will start learning all of this as soon as you begin your first lesson. What makes the difference between those who just sing great and those who sing great and give a great performance? This is an integral part of what we teach at our studio. You will learn the technique that will enable you to experience freedom while performing in front of family members, or performing in sold-out concerts! There are certainly no strings attached. If you want to experience some wonderful results, you are, of course, welcome to do so. Please come in for the free audition, and be prepared to ask some questions! I am looking for students dedicated to freeing their voice and making singing their very best way of expressing true emotion. You can feel comfortable coming in, at whatever stage you are at right now, and rest assured that your next experience will be one to treasure! Get your spot in the studio by contacting us now at the Finley School of Fine Musical Arts! Also, check out our website!

With the right guidance, anyone can sing with power and ease! I am confident that I can help my students develop their vocal techniques and find their unique sense of styles. I have taken voice lessons for over 10 years and have studied Broadway, blues, soul, pop, and jazz styles. In addition to my private studies, I have taken many relevant college courses, such as music theory, piano 1, guitar 1, songwriting, state singing, and choir. I will be going back to school to study vocal jazz for the fall 2016 semester. Please contact me so that we can set up a time to discuss what you are looking for and how I can help you create a road towards your goal. Please note that my vocal recordings are amateur, but will give you a feel for my singing ability and control.

If you have always wanted to discover your voice, you are in the right place! Singing is an expression of the soul and can be perfected and beautified with practice and guidance. Although I have been trained classically, I have also studied mix/belt which can be applied to any genre of singing. I love teaching Opera, Musical Theater, and Pop. There are many techniques when it comes to voice. I focus on freeing the voice and making sure the extrinsic muscles in the throat are not grabbing. I teach proper breathing, especially for classical singing, but for mix and belt we work a lot on tone color, relaxing any tensions that arise, and expression. With all of these techniques, confidence is gained. I have a BA (bachelors degree) in Vocal Performance from Utah State University and an MM (masters degree) in Vocal Performance from Brigham Young University. I have taught private voice lessons at USU and BYU, and I have also taught group voice classes at BYU. My mother and I presently teach group voice classes for children and teens who want to learn singing technique. I teach Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Violin as well. I have 13 years of private violin training in the Suzuki method (which is the method I teach) and a past member of Utah Youth Symphony Orchestra and Young Artist Chamber Players. I was deemed "The Fiddler" while on a performing mission to Nauvoo, Illinois. I also took violin lessons from one of the head violin professors at USU. I can also teach beginning to intermediate piano if needed. I played the piano starting at age 6, and can accompany and play many songs. I can guarantee improvement because I have seen all of my students improve. For a 30 min lesson, I charge $25 for voice and $20 for violin and piano. I can also do 45-minute lessons if needed (Prices are negotiable depending on circumstances)..

  • Group Voice Lessons

My name is Gloria, and I teach group voice lessons. These are 1-hour classes currently held on Saturdays at the Day Murray Music Education House. The class sizes are limited to groups of four, aiming to give students as much individual attention as possible. I teach students ages 12 and up. The lessons involve group instruction and practice, individual workshop time with an accompanist, and performances. The techniques and the basic principles I will be teaching in this class are the exact principles that have helped me develop my voice, that I learned in a college setting. My purpose for the class reads as follows: "My purpose is to help students develop the skills and techniques of proper singing in order to discover and enhance the beauty of their individual voice. I wish to provide an opportunity for growth and development in a supportive environment that will build confidence in one's vocal abilities." I have witnessed basic principles of singing taught to others, and the major improvements that can result. Whether you are a beginner wanting to learn how to sing a little better or a little more advanced, these principles can enhance the singer's voice at any level! Come, and let's learn together as we apply foundational principles for your voice!

  • Keynotes Piano Studio- Sugar House Location

Piano- Learning to play the piano can be a fun and positive experience. Our goal is to create a learning environment that provides a well-rounded and complete piano education. We believe in actively engaging students in learning to play the piano through a multi-sensory approach in our teaching strategies, curriculum, activities, and resources. Voice- Lessons will focus on the individual’s unique voice in an age-appropriate manner. We do not offer a cookie-cutter approach. Rather, we will evaluate each student’s voice and problem areas and use scientifically based approaches to work past them! The most common problems that singers experience are cracking, strain, weakness, and hoarseness. However, students will learn how to avoid these issues as they learn to properly transition from their chest voice (lower register) to their head voice (higher register). This is achieved when the outer muscles of the throat are relaxed and the vocal cords are able to work in their most natural and efficient manner. We will also use a technique called vocal tuning that allows them to access the full range of their unique and beautiful voice. Artistry and expression are every bit as important as technique. Proper technique allows the voice to soar as artists fully explore each song and character they approach with confidence and freedom.

Thumbtack Spotlight

Emily Merrell Vocal Studio

(40 reviews)

I think the inspiration probably came/comes more out of watching his hard work pay off both in his career, and in his life in general - rather than just the fact that he is a business owner. He always has a very systematic way of achieving his goals - and that is something I have always really admired.

Emily Merrell had her parents as living examples of being good business people and this led her in opening her own business out of her passion for music. Using her extensive background and qualifications on music, Emily offers various classes ranging from vocal technique, song writing, traditional piano and more. She enjoys sharing her talents to her clients, both beginners and professionals.

I work very hard to shape my instruction to each of my students' individual strengths, weaknesses, and goals in order to bring each person to a place where he/she is confident, and feels inspired to share his/her voice with others. My students know that I am dedicated to their success. I think when people meet me, they know I'm someone they can trust. That's really the most important thing.

Having recently finished graduate school, Emily still has a bright future ahead and that is shown through her recent successful projects which include holding a recital concert for her students. It was overwhelming not just for her, but also to her students, as she let them experience the real thrill of performing for a large crowd.

Feel confident about your voice. Whether you'll be singing or speaking, allow Emily Merrell to train you to your full potential.
