Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Mike at American Residential was exactly what a project manager should be. We went into our basement project with high hopes that we’d be able to make the absolute most of the space and some of the awkward placements from the original builder of piping and venting etc. and Mike and his team delivered with kindness, cooperation, patience, and grace. The design changed and resources were rotated to accomplish different pieces of the project within a timely manner. At one point, the delay in our ability to continue was completely our fault as the client, and when we were ready to start back up again things moved quick and efficiently. When there were issues or changes we requested, Mike exhibited a great sense of humility and willingness to make everything right as quickly as possible. He turned my basement into a the perfect apartment space and I would highly recommend working with him to my friends and family.

Hired these guys to finish a 1900 sq ft basement June 2020. Was told by Demarco that the project would take 3-4 weeks to complete. We are now into December and still not complete after 6 months. When i asked why the project was taking so long the response given was “I don’t know why”. Some of the issues I ran into with this company are: 1 the framing was just sub-par. There were multiple incident where I hand to correct the framer on what was level with a some push back. Wasn’t until I showed Demarco the errors before the errors got corrected. Now that the sheet rock is up it is more noticeable where soffit boxes weren’t straight which crated unnecessary dips on my ceiling line. 2. The sheet rock and mud crew brought in I would not recommend to anyone. In my opinion shouldn’t be in business. Instead of removing any screws, nails or anything debris on the walls they just put the sheet rock on over the top. This create unnecessary holes and bows in the sheet rock. When I confronted the sheet rock crew about it. I was told that the mud would hide it all and that they didn’t have the tools to remove the nails and screws. Hum!. They also didn’t know the difference between smooth walls and textured walls. I specifically requested my wall to match the wall upstairs which are smooth and painted with a roller. I ended up orange peel textured walls. On top off all this I gave them permission to use my restroom upstairs. Did they bother to use it? NO! They decided it would be better to urinate in my widow-wells. After confronting them about it they decided to urinate into McDonald’s cups, empty bottles and a bucket. Which at some point got knocked over and I hand to clean the urine smell from my concrete floors. This crew was fired. New crew comes in to fix the textured walls. Which was done to the best of their abilities with what was already done. 3. Two windows were installed crooked and sheetrock not placed on the inside of the window after I was told it would be. When I brought it up to Demarco. His reply was “hum why would they do that”. 4. Soffit box built to close to heat vent and the heat vent cover can’t be installed. 5. Didn’t properly cut the holes in a new shower insert and the whole onset has to be replaced. The list can go! I’ve been in the customer service and sales business for over 20 years. Served 6 years in the Air Force. This is by far the most incompetent and poorest quality of service I’ve dealt with. During the 6 months they work on my house I had 4 neighbors ask if would refer them. I wouldn’t refer them to them or anyone else.
