Excellent service from start to finish. Luis and Joe came out to do an estimate for insulation they were curtious and on time. After a day the team came to finish the work, there was only 4-6" of original insulation left in the attic. EBRR and team showed up on time and ready to work. Half a day later we had a fully insulated attic. The crew even removed the old house fan that was leaking air into the attic and put new drywall over it. I could have gotten the project done cheaper by a few hundred dollars but none of the contractors I had come out were nearly as professional, polite, and knowledgeable as the EBRR team. I highly recommend this team.

Jose came out to clean our in-slab ducts when he found some major issues with the concrete system. He was up front and honest that the issue may only be resolved by running new ductwork through the walls and that the cleaning would be a waste. He didn't charge for coming out and the hour he spent doing the initial setup. We really appreciate his candor and professionalism.

Tamas showed up on time, was very considerate and polite, and did a great job cleaning the ductwork in my apartment. His bid was good and I even added the extra deodorizer and germ killer spray to the job. I highly recommend him.

Leo did a good job , he was on time and professional. Initial Quote for dryer vent cleaning was $129 and after seeing in person and dryer vent pipe goes all the way from living room to deck outside , the quotation was increased to $289 which is higher than the quote i received from the same company for whole house Air duct cleaning for 6-10 vents($249) . After negotiation they gave me a discount of $50 ($229). Even though it seemed still expensive for me after discount , i went for it.

My Construction Services exceeded my expectations. They came same day, arrived early! And gave an honest quote (I had price checked many companies) my disposal is working beautifully. Last min I asked them to fix the pipe to my dryer and a vent to my attic. They did same day and even drove to Home Depot to get a part that they needed. I have found my new handy man service company. Thank you MCS!

It was a very good experience. The owner came and cleaned out my air ducts. This was very important for me to have this done as I have asthma and I have lived in my home for 38 years. They had never been cleaned. My dryer ductwork was very lint filled. As I am a senior citizen it is near impossible for me to climb a ladder and do all the cleaning. He did an excellent job. I could tell a difference in my home's air quality immediately. And my dryer is drying my clothes as it should, without me worrying about a fire. The owner was very professional and knowledgeable. And extremely friendly and personable. I have already recommended his service to friends and family members.

Sam and his team did an excellent job adding flooring to my unfinished attic. He gave implementation options and offered advice on each. He was very responsive to messages and his team was very nice. They also installed 2 bedroom fans and an electrical outlet in the kitchen. Would use again.

"Nico" painted, repaired the roof, patched holes in the attic that the builder had left open, and touched up odds and ends in my home to make it look fresh, clean, and well cared for. His efforts helped me to get 3 offers on my house, a ratified contract in 11 days for $30K more than the previous house sold. I cannot speak more highly of his attention to detail, professionalism, trustworthy and pleasant disposition. It gives me great pleasure to recommend Nico for work inside and outside your home. Nico is a one stop shop in handymen services.

I had a HVAC system with no cold air output. The outdoor unit was located on the roof of my condo bldg, accessible only through a small attic crawl space. Brian arrived promptly, and very quickly identified my unit, diagnosed the problem and replaced the defective part. I had cold air again within 30 minutes.

I tried to write a review last week about the wonderful experience I had with MJ Home Services but by mistake I clicked the post review button before I had a chance to write my review. Therefore this review is in addition to the other review dated 12-22-12 from Mark S. I used MJ Home Services to treat mold in my attic, clean my ventilation system and carpets throughout my entire house, fix a leaking toilet, and to repair some drywall in my living room that was damaged by water in several places (due to the toilet on the floor above it apparently slowing leaking over a perioid of years). Due to my busy work schedule, John and Wayne (workman who came to my house) were extremely accommodating and flexible by performing the above services on a Saturday, a Sunday, and on a Wednesday night. All of the above services were performed with superior workmanship and at very reasonable prices. I know this because I had 2 other estimates before I selected MJ Home Services to perform the work. John was extremely knowledgeable about all of the above services performed. In addition, both John and Wayne were very neat, professional and courteous when performing all the work. In summary, if you want superior workmanshipcombined with very reasonable prices you owe it to yourself to use mJ Home Services for any water damage, mold, ventilation system or carpet cleaning services.

Traylor Design and Construction did a very nice job on my kitchen and bathroom ventilation projects. Both projects were relatively small but complicated jobs that involved a lot of different skills. Andre and his crew were easy to deal with and the price was very reasonable. I am very happy with the results and would recommend Traylor to others.

Mr. Morales did two jobs for me. In each case, his workmanship was outstanding. One job consisted of rebuilding walls that were dismantled for basement waterproofing. Te second job was a more straightforward drywall and dryer ductwork job. I recommend Mr. Morales unreservedly.

Mr. Foster has installed ceiling fans in my home, as well as done all the major electrical work for a major kitchen renovation. The kitchen was 1938, and the electrical outlets may have never been renovated. He added additional outlets (multiple 2 and 3 way light switches and plugs), as well as installed a new light fixture and ceiling fan. He installed outlets for a dishwasher, and an inset refrigerator as well. I imagine there are more specific tasks involved in what he did, but it was all seamless and without incident. He is easy to work with and responsive. I am looking at another project with him.

I don't write many reviews, but I wanted to go out of my way to make sure to to write a detailed one for Yosif and Smart House Remodeling. I think I am uniquely qualified to give a very thorough review, as I hired Yosif and his team to do a basement renovation covering over 1,400 square feet. This was a big job, and below you can see some of the before and after photos from a few of the rooms. I'm a pretty particular client; I'm an engineer and pay attention to the details and quality of work that I get done and was very pleased with the outcome on this. I hired Yosif after getting approximately 8 (!) different bids for this job. So that shows you what he was up against. I think the typical experience with working with Yosif is likely as follows: you have him out for an estimate, he has some good ideas about the work that you may have not considered, he gives you a prompt estimate with very reasonable prices, and then you hire him to start the job. Once work is well underway, you realize you've got something really great going and then start creating new contracts to do all kinds of additional work with him--work that perhaps you've put off because you dreaded having to go through finding a quality contractor for each additional project. In my case, I started off with vinyl plank flooring over 1400 sq. feet (spot-leveling & demo needed), with some switch relocation and other electrical work (outlet additions, ceiling box), recessed lighting installation, and HVAC vent installations. By the end I had added significant drywall patching (including closing holes in attic), replacing a huge wood paneled room with all-new drywall, installed an attic ladder, replaced a rear door (including new framing & storm door install), repaired a front door, had a custom divider wall built to hide an HVAC unit, had soundproofing insulation put in, multiple in-wall access panels, minor plumbing, and I could honestly go on. I got an amazing amount done beyond what I originally though was possible for my budget. Yosif is careful to make sure that you are OK with the finished product on each phase of the work that is being done, and is willing to redo things that are not quite right. Each job is properly finished too, with the small things like priming on drywall (plenty skip this!), clean up, and material disposal. I found him very trustworthy as well and had no issue with him doing work at my home regardless of whether I was there or not, yet he was also respectful of my schedule. I would also consider him skilled at a very broad range of construction areas/topics, which if you've hired a number of contractors before you probably know that is not always the case. Although I do want to note that I found his drywall work especially good. I don't think many people would assume that he has 10+ years of experience, but it shows in what he is capable of an his approach to solving the problems that you encounter (and you will always find something interesting when you start opening up walls!). In short, I would gladly recommend him without any reservations.

I had this company install an attic ladder and attic boards for me. Eugene was very professional and explained the quote and the work to me. In regards to the attic services, he installed really nice firm boards for me to store my items in the attic. He purchased the attic ladder (included in his price) and at first it seemed like a good fit. I even paid him for the services afterwards. He was going to come back anyway to paint the attic ladder opening (white to match my ceiling) but I noticed that the attic door wasn't closing properly. Even though I had already paid him, this man kept his word and came back to ensure proper installation of the attic door (talk about integrity!). Despite some challenges with the attic door itself, Eugene did not charge me or even ask me to pay anything else concerning the attic ladder. He purchased a new attic door for me because he noticed the other door was bent. The installation of the new attic door is perfect! I couldn't be happier with my attic door. Despite some hiccups, this company stood by their word, completed the job, and did it well.

Romero is great to work with. I trust him to fix issues that I identified. We did run into a bit overtime issue because he forgot to take care of the caulking in the bathroom as I mentioned during the estimate session. I ended up paying for half an hour more.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.
