Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

We hired Alex to remodel our basement. He and his team did a great job with framing the new wall, painting, and flooring. He also did the electrical work to add new lighting. Alex was very responsive from start to finish and communicated very clearly the next steps in the process. The quality of work was superb and we are very happy with our basement. We would absolutely hire him again and have already recommended him to others.

We had Jorge work on our basement-replace drywall, remove wainscoting, install a sink, patch the ceiling & paint. Jorge was great to work. He’s very quick to respond to texts or phone calls. He showed up to the job site every morning to review the work to be done for the day. After the job was complete he did a walk thru to ensure all work was done to our satisfaction.

Yobany and his team did an amazing job on our basement last Fall. He did a great job of communicating the entire time, his pricing was extremely competitive, and we will absolutely be using him again for more projects. He doesn't cut corners and is genuinely interested in customer service - something that gets lost on other General Contractors. We have already referred him to 2 other neighbors and will continue to do so.

1. be more present on site to check the quality of work. 2. be responsive and honest. I have paid all due based on trust as I was travelling in mission based on his confirmation that the work has been completed properly. When I came back to check the work I reported to him many defects and requested him to fix these defects. His response was negative saying that he is busy. I reported to him major leak in the bath tub faucet that prevents us from using the shower. He was arguing that this is not emergency and can wait. Then he gave me an appointment to come and fix it on Saturday July 18, 2021. He did not show up. Moreover, he ignored all of my messages to him. The following summarizes the defects: 1. Most doors of the finished basement including entrance door are jammed. 2. The bathtub faucet is leaking badly at the main connection and the coupling has been installed in reverse!!!! 3. Entrance door tile need metal angles between the tiles and carpet line. 4. One side in the store room has missing wall frame and the wall is not finished properly. 5. Power outlet for the sump pump should be brought out. Currently, it is in the wall creating fire risk. 6. The cooker power supply plug has not been installed and wires are left on the floor with risk hazards. 7. The countertop cabinet lower frame is not fully stapled. 8. One of the windows leaks water from outside. I noticed the there is big gap between the outdoor frame and the wall. 9. Calking is missing at the ends of the stair case and the door of the store room, kitchen and bathroom. 10. Some power switches need to be adjusted. 11. Painting finish is very poor. 12. A lot of unused items were left behind without returning them to Home Depot. Also window framing woos and walls finish/painting material were ordered in significant excess to the need and left behind. 13. disrespect and ignorance of my requests. Based on above, I will never recommend him to any friend and I am considering sewing him.
