Sundiata A. says, "I received several estimates for updates I had planned to do before the spring including installing new luxury vinyl flooring throughout the first and second floor of my home, the installation of stairway railing inside, and the installation of a privacy fence around my property. I split the project into several smaller projects thinking I could never find one contractor to undertake the work. That is until I met Teuris owner of Gomez Remodeling. Teuris came to my home the very next day complete with floor samples and performed a walkthrough. While he was there I mentioned all of the projects I was looking to undertake so he spent some time taking floor measurements, railing measurements, and area measurements for the fencing project and assured me he could undertake the entire project. While I was skeptical that he would be able to do it all, that very evening he provided me with separate estimates for both materials and labor for each project that was amazingly competitive. I was sold and hired his company on the spot. Teuris and his amazing crew did an absolutely incredible job of transforming my home. He often made recommendations as we were going through the process as he has an incredible creative eye for interior design and detail, and I don't. I followed his lead, and I really still can't believe how new and refreshed my home looks and its amazing transformation. The staircase railing he installed is very modern, sexy, and secure, and the outdoor fence looks spectacular and is precisely what I wanted. It has inspired a whole new outdoor architecture plan I'm working on now. Teuris and his team which included Roberto, Montero, Marwill, and two others (who's names I hate myself for not being able to recall) are all perfectionists! They showed up EVERY SINGLE DAY during the entire duration of a nearly 3 week project at or before 8:00 am Monday thru Saturday until well after 6:00 p.m. Yes, I said EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! I was blown away!!! Each of the members of the team are masterful artisans and take great pride in their work and their attention to detail was impeccable. They explained what was being done and how it was being done every step of the way, and Teuris insisted at the end of each day that he and I perform a walkthrough of all of the work that was accomplished that day and what would be accomplished the next day. If I'd bring up a concern, it was completed the next day. Customer satisfaction is the number one mission at Gomez Remodeling for certain! For example, when it appeared to me that an area in my dining room floor looked slightly uneven, before I could clean my eyeglasses to be sure it wasn't me, he pulled out a leveler and although it was only a miniscule degree of sloping that no one in the world would notice, Teuris and his team pulled the entire flooring up, laid down a compound to correct it and laid the floor again by the time I returned from the gym the next morning. I felt guilty yet impressed at the same time! The work was so well done that in the middle of the project I asked Teuris to provide an estimate of installing a backsplash and painting the kitchen (including cabinets) the living room, hallways, 1st floor bathroom, guest bedroom, the 12 foot area above the staircase, and the entire master bedroom, which was also competitive, so I signed up and wow! Another masterful job. Gomez Remodeling is First Class. I'm hooked and in the next week or so will be doing a walkthrough with Teuris on my rental property to do all of the same. That's how much I trust the company and how much I have enjoyed working with each and every member of the team. If you are looking for all of the services I contracted for or perhaps one or two of them, or anything else, and you want a contractor who takes away all of the pre and post contractor syndrome many of us have experienced, please take it from me, you'll want Gomez Remodeling to take on the task!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does adding a porch increase home value?

A porch may increase your home’s value and boost its curb appeal. However, you’ll need to do your research to understand what types of home upgrades can attract potential buyers.

What is a sleeping porch?

A sleeping porch is a screened balcony or deck that contains sleep furnishings and cool breezes. If you live in a region that experiences warm weather at night, these porches can provide a way to escape the heat and get a good night’s sleep.

Does a porch need foundations?

Yes, your porch should have a foundation that adheres to your local building codes. You can often find this information online. You can also consult your porch builder and ask for their help when navigating building codes.

How much is a porch?

It costs about $5,000-$10,000 to build a small, basic porch, according to HGTV. Prefabricated porches typically cost around $10,000-$30,000. Larger, custom-made porches can cost as much as $50,000.

To find out exactly how much your porch will cost, request a cost estimate from a porch builder near you.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Does a general contractor need to enter my home?

Provided the project is located inside your home, completing the job would require a general contractor to enter your home. But if your project is located outdoors, a general contractor will likely not need to enter your home. Discuss your options with general contractors in your area before hiring.
