My abilities, and accomplishments were clearly highlighted. Tom consistently went above and beyond, ensuring I was aware of job alerts, interview techniques, and upcoming job fairs. Amenah has been an indispensable component of some of my best work throughout my bachelor and masters degrees. Even if the subject matter is obscure, she is able to quickly understand the point I was trying to get across and help me find the most strategic, well-organized pathway to get my point across to the reader. Importantly, she takes into consideration the audience you are writing for (whether academic, journalistic, grant agencies, etc.), helping you tailor the form and delivery of your writing. Amenah is not only a skilled grammatical editor. She is able to work with my style of writing, not against it, making me a better writer with each project she assists on. Her personable nature and common sense way of talking me through even the most complex subject matter helps me organize my thoughts and arguments, making any writing task seem far less daunting. I would HIGHLY recommend working with Amenah.

Kevin is a dynamic and effective educator. The indepth feedback that he provided to my son on his writing assignments this past school year is what I've been looking for from his private school teachers since grade school. Kevin has exceptional technical knowledge of grammar which is another area he is focusing on with my son as well as helping him to prepare for the PSAT. We started working with Kevin during the last two months of the 9th grade school year. It was awesome to see the pride my son felt in getting a 98% on his last paper of the year and reading his teacher's glowing comments. I am looking forward to seeing my son finally start the new school year ahead of the curve with getting the extra support that he needs. I can't say enough about how pleased I am with Kevin's services. As an educator I know that tutors like Kevin are hard to find.

I had a one on one session with Tom and it was fantastic. At first I thought I was pretty ok with my speech outline before I talked to him. It wasn't until we talked about the structure of my speech that I realized my speech lacked focus. Long story short, we completely restructured my speech together and Tom gave me extremely great insights on how to plan out my speech before I even begin writing it. This is knowledge something that I will take it to the heart and will never forget.

It was summer and we had a lot of travel and were not consistent clients. We are currently looking to rehire and work with her this winter/spring.

Nancy Halsey has written grants for our organization for almost 10 years. She has exceptional writing and editing skills. After Nancy wrote a particular grant, the foundation called me to say it was the best well-written grant they had received. I have never received a phone call like that before. Nancy is professional and honest; she uses research and wisdom when writing grants and talking with employees. I highly recommend her for any writing opportunities that you may have. L. Superb writer and editor. Please view samples of my work at The Nahmias Cipher Report.

    About

I bring both academic and hands-on professional editorial experience to this late-life business enterprise. As an undergraduate, I was an English and French major whose work on the college newspaper led to co-editorship in my senior year. My editorial skills supported me at early jobs in reference publishing and manuscript transcription and publication before. I undertook graduate studies in anthropology and linguistics at Bryn Mawr College. Thereafter, I worked on proposal development with various teams of behavioral and bench researchers on projects funded by foundations and federal agencies such as AOA, NIMH, NIA, SAMHSA, and NINCDS. I am a careful writer and editor who takes pride in making complex scientific findings accessible to uninitiated readers. I also pursue genealogical research on my own initiative.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
