After a great stint of piano and violin lessons, we just began with Johnny Walker, Aida's strings teacher, to start my son on cello. We are so impressed with him - he knows HOW to teach, asking questions, guiding my son to think and understand rather than a mere demonstrate-and-repeat style. My son immediately took to him and can hardly wait between lessons for the next. Thank you!

I took several lessons with Gregg, and I can attest that he is a talented guitarist as well as a passionate teacher who listens to his students and wants to help you achieve your goals. He encourages practice, but does not berate you when life overtakes things. His years of work as a teacher (as well as his own learning history) have helped him to figure out what really works, and he is excited and patient in sharing that with his students. He also has many guitars in his studio, which means you don’t have to bring yours with you if it is not convenient. In addition to the instruction, Gregg volunteers a lot of his time with Guitars Not Guns (www.guitarsnotguns.org) – a program that uses music as a catalyst to encourage children and teens to use their creativity to foster personal development and to help divert them from self-destructive influences such as drugs, alcohol and gang-related activities. They get free lessons, and if they complete the program they get to keep the guitar! The program’s goal is to reduce gun violence and other destructive behaviors in our city. I recommend supporting businesses run by people like Gregg, who provides great instruction and also works to make a positive impact in our community!

For personal reasons I was able to take just a few lessons with Sam, but what he tough me is constantly in my mind, not jus at singing time but on a daily basis, because I'm still doing the warm up and exercises he tough me. I sing at church and my confidence level is not the best yet, but Sam encouraged me to feel secure. He is very knowledgeable and has an amazing voice and a sweet heart. I hope to go back to take lessons with him in the near future.

Sammy Huh is extremely professional while presenting an infectious enthusiasm for his student's progress. I noticed immediate improvements in my voice, and the environment he created during lessons made me unafraid to take risks and go farther. My schedule is complex, and Sammy worked with me to find compatible times for class. All in all I am completely satisfied with this service.

Good professional process. Saved us the drive around. Convenient service. We got a good violin teacher. Sadly due to unexpected circumstances violin teacher had to relocate. Heather from lessons in your home was always open, available and responsive to us and we felt a commitment to getting us a new violin teacher. I would recommend that each family ensure their recommended music teacher is one that can provide continuous and consistent lessons.

My two teenage daughters and I trained with David, our instructor, with Falcon Security. It was the best decision we have ever made! Not only did we learn skills to protect ourselves, but we now feel empowered! I know my daughters will be more careful and ready at a momemt's notice to defend and protect themselves, heaven forbid should they need to! As for myself, I have a true confidence that should I find myself in an unsafe situation, I can handle it without a shadow of a doubt. David was spot on with his lessons. He conveyed what can happen to any of us but did so in a professional way. I know he really cared about our well-being and he took our lessons to heart every session. He pointed out scenarios that the girls have never yet contemplated and then gave them the skills to handle what ever can happen. At 17 and 18 it was time for them to learn self defense. David was awesome and I couldn't be happier with the results!

Carey’s talent as a teacher does wonders for bridging the gap between music theory and music performance. I went into lessons with only a very basic knowledge of music theory that I hardly was able to apply to guitar, but his lessons taught me how to play in a way where I can either explore the musical depth of the tune or simply jam, comfortable that what I’m playing will always sound good. It’s broadened my abilities as a musician without taking away the simple fun of playing guitar, something that is invaluable in any teacher.

I hired Patricia to help me improve my spoken Spanish in preparation for an upcoming conference in Argentina. We meet three times per week and converse about a wide range of topics, from technical workplace vocabulary to casual conversation. Patricia has been a tremendous help for me to refurbish my Spanish skills and improve my speaking precision. I hope to continue taking lessons even after the conference is over!

Eugene’s Music Studio is one of the most professional & kind music studios we had the honor to work with. My son is so excited and cannot wait for his piano lessons. The teacher was able to keep him busy and involved throughout the entire session (not an easy task) and she always comes up with new ways for him to stay involved. We are very happy that we found Eugene's Music Studio. Eugene was very attuned and helped us find the best fit for our child and we look forward to seeing the progress he will make with time.

Diego is a natural teacher with a God-given talent. My daughter has only been taking guitar lessons for 4 1/2 months, but I am amazed by her progress and accomplishments. She learns something new each week and walks out of each lesson with a big smile on her face. He is very kind, encouraging and knowledgeable with a fun and diverse repertoire. I highly recommend Diego.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
