True to the other reviews, Brandon was not only on time, but he was early! I need help anchoring furniture to the wall in my baby's nursery, installing a stair baby gate, lowering a crib mattress, and fixing a faucet. He worked quickly while he was here without sacrificing quality. The quote was fair, and he even helped do another small project while he was here. I definitely plan on using Brandon's services again in the future.

I hired RB to repair drywall which included knicks in @ four places plus three holes from door knobs hitting into the drywall; repair wooden gate which included re-nailing to slates (+ RB further fortified gate a little extra at no charge); drywall repair over stove from water/ heat damage; installed 3 door stops; screwed on two vents (no charge) and repaired part of the fascia/ soffit on roof which was disconnecting from roof. He arrived when he said, did more than I asked him to do, finished early, repaired the drywall very well/ no visible signs, and quoted a reasonable price on the jobs I hired him to do. I would hire him again.

Stewart did a terrific job getting our home ready to put on the market. He repaired and painted drywall, replaced light fixtures and outlets, did interior carpentry jobs, and generally did everything necessary to get the house in tip-top shape . He also rebuilt several exterior gates and stained the decks and fence. Stewart always arrived promptly and worked steadily for long days. He gave accurate estimates of how long each part of the job would take and gave good and fair advice on what needed to be done. His work was excellent, and I plan to go back to him for work in the future.

Mike was great to work with - very responsive and had ideas to fix some of our problems. He came in at 5:30 am to accommodate our schedule! Mike painted, put up a reclaimed wood wall; put up baby gates; attached a headboard to the wall; and re-installed blinds. Would definitely use Mike again.

We contact HP to replace our front door and install a storm door. We were very please with the work Herbert and his assistant did for us. All the work was done in a timely fashion and at an affordable price. The finish product, including the installation of a smart lock to the door, was outstanding. We highly recommend Herbert for a job well done.

Needed to have a brick walkway installed in the back of my home to connect my basement entrance to my driveway. Paul was prompt and professional with scheduling and communication. This was during the 30 days of rain. Paul was excellent in keeping in touch and making sure I was aware he was monitoring the weather and would get to my path as soon as the ground was dry. True to his word the very day the ground had tried he had his crew on site to install my walkway. He installed exactly what I was looking for at a competitive price. I will definitely use Paul again for my landscaping and hardscaping needs.

JJ Contracting has been working on a number of projects in my neighborhood, including the house closest to mine. I felt it was a positive recommendation that they had so many jobs in this community that I hired them for several household projects that had been accumulating in my own home. These include replacing a garden fence post that had rotted out and was no longer stable, repairing a garden gate that was sagging so badly it could not be opened, and repairing a whole in the ceiling that had been cut a year ago to find a water leak. In each case, I was extremely pleased by the quality of their work, their professionalism, and their work ethic. They even take on small tasks along the way without charge. In fact, I am working with them now on designing a custom pedestal for my laundry room for a new washer and dryer which have nothing ready made available. That is testament indeed to the confidence I have in JJ Contracting. Susan Moos

I had several repairs needed on my rental property after a tenant completed trashed the home. I needed the fence and gate rebuilt, the front door and jab attended to after both were completely split, closet racks refastened, blinds and fixtures attended to..... basically a complete overhaul. Tony was very flexible and accommodating to my needs and ensured all repairs were carried out well. I would highly recommend him as he is honest and his prices are reasonable. You won't go wrong in giving him a try.

Great work by the JLP team. I had them do pressure washing of our townhouse siding, as well as concrete stairs and it was great. Communication was easy, and the work was good. Reasonable pricing as well. I ended up having them do another job for me (patio gate replacement; it was good work too!) Jorge was nice and professional, I would hire again. Thank you!

Jason did a great job renovating our deck. He was perceptive and let us know when he found areas that were unstable. He did a wonderful job replacing all of our deck boards, steps, and rail tops, as well as adding more pickets to bring them up to code and adding a sturdy gate to keep our toddler safe from the steps. He finished the job quickly and the estimates we were quoted were pretty spot on for what we paid in the end. He is also a very nice person and I look forward to using him for other projects down the road.

I am very happy with the job performed from IRISTECTURE. Iris contacted me to me to discuss and quote my project. She gave me a quote that fit just right to my budget. I needed a gravel extension of my driveway, was annoyed by the mud whenever it rained but now I'm happy because there is no longer that problem and now have more parking space. They handle everything from purchasing all materials to do all the work. I highly recommend IRISTECTURE. Very professional service and affordable!

I hired Creative Services to design, convert (from studs), and finish a portion of the basement, (appx.900sq.ft) while leaving plenty of unseen storage space. At our 1st meeting, I explained to Mr. Bertran, I have a very difficult time envisioning ; size, proportion or placement, but I had a picture in my mind of what I wanted. Mr. Bertran suggested I share my vision with him, and he would translate my thoughts, into a rough drawing, to be used as a starting point. What I "saw" was; a nice size entertaining/TV area, a comfortable space, where I can work on my jewelry pieces, and when needed, it would become a dining/buffet area. The last part of my vision included; a wall that could be mirrored, hold a couple of ballet barre's, floor space large enough for both my Instructor, and me. In addition, the ceiling, and beam placement, needed to comply with the detailed specifications, of the Aerial Yoga System that will b coming soon. Obviously storage, was essential! Mr. Bertran, Ralph, was very patient while listening to my vision, and extremely understanding and kind, while he explained all the current options available for; lighting, wiring, outlets, flooring, doors, license's, inspections... Honestly, I hadn't given these "details" much thought. I spent my career in the World of Finance, and I was completely outside my "comfort zone"! I found his knowledge impressive, as well as his ability to explain, so even I, understood, was much appreciated, and in some aspects, comforting. It was evident, from the beginning, Mr. Bertran set high standards for himself, and for anyone he employs. Mr. Bertran was involved in every aspect of my project, whether the task was completed by Creative Services, or a sub-contractor. I could see, throughout the project, Ralph, not only had that "old fashioned" sense of pride for each job, small or large, he truly loves what he does. I found it more than reassuring, that every Inspector who came to approve and sign off on their particular component, made the same comment, albeit with slight variations. They each told me,"I have not seen this much attention paid to details in long time. The quality of your renovation, is Top Notch" I was so pleased with Ralph's abilities and his core values of hard work, attention to details and quality work, for a fair price, I hired Creative Services to do some additional work. I had some trees and bushes trimmed and shaped. I had a relatively new back gate, completely fall apart. Ralph was able to remove the damaged insides, and completely remake the gate, using leftover lumber and the original coverings, reducing the cost. In addition, I needed grab bars installed in two bathrooms, meeting ADA requirements, fixing & hanging a large mirror, painting the wall, a kitchen faucet repaired, gutters cleaned..Again, no job is too big, nor too small for them. I will be having Creative Services back, when I finish my list, and they have an opening.

We hired Chris Dawkins to build an addition to our deck which served as a shed for extra storage for lawn furniture, tools, etc. He gave us a very affordable price. He was dependable and reliable every step of the way. He has since done work on our property to include mending the deck, installing gates and storm doors, cleaning the gutters and even cut down some trees that were in bad shape. He also helped our neighbors after the snow storm had caused much damage to their roofs and siding.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

      • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
      • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
        • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
      • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

      • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
      • Toilet replacement: $75.
      • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
      • Faucet replacement: $125.
      • Garbage disposal: $75.

      Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
