I hired Payne's Tree Service to remove three dead and/or dying trees (24" to 48" in circumference) from my backyard. I received four quotes from other companies and am very pleased with my decision to work with Steve. He provided a very fair estimate, was on time and very professional in outlining the cost for the job, and best of all, the work was excellent. The project was complicated by my (unexpectedly) very muddy backyard and the crew took exceptional care not to damage the grass and to avoid leaving ruts in the wet areas. Much appreciated, guys. The crew arrived on time, hauled off all the wood and debris, and left my backyard looking better than it did before they began their work. Kudos all around. I chose not to have the stumps removed because of where the trees were located in a mulched, woody area of the backyard and instructed Steve to cut them as close to the ground as possible - which was done as requested. I give Payne's Tree Service a 5-Star Excellent rating. I know who to call when I need tree removal/trimming services in the future. He followed up the next day with a courtesy call to make sure I was happy with the work as completed. I assured him that I was. P.S. The day after he finished my job, he began a project for my neighbor - who obviously was equally impressed by the work he did for us. Thanks, Steve!

Kenny & Matt are awesome. I had them fix my lawn - grading, drainage, new sod, edging, cut back bamboo, etc - and my trees. They were competitively priced (I got three estimates). They diagnosed our tree problem (including that one tree was hollow) and turned out to be completely right. They brought down the huge, hollow tree. The trimmed the other 4 oaks we have. The job they did with the lawn is just, wow. The lawn is bigger. They didn't just cut the bamboo, they dug up the roots and stumps to make sure the lawn was smooth. The drainage was corrected so that there aren't pools of water on the new grass. They trimmed the trees back so we have a lot more sunlight. Great work. They also trimmed the front yard - pulled up the weeds, ivy and virginia creeper, trimmed some hedges, bushes and trees. As a courtesy, they planted some plants I'd bought. And they knew what they were doing; underneath the ivy and weeds they found a few azalea bushes and saved them. Anyone whose known the frustration of having landscapers pull up your "weeds" only to discover it was actually your beloved plant, Smoot's Lawn and Tree care are your guys. Oh, and they're really nice and pleasant, showed up on time, and finished in just two days. I've already asked them to come back to do some other stuff.

Gennaro came the same day of my request and gave me a quote for cutting my lawn, trimming and edging the flower beds, walkways and driveway. He came back the next morning and performed the work. He was thorough and extremely pleasant to deal with. He even air blew all the areas after cutting which made it look polished. Thank you Gennaro for doing such a nice job.

P&P formed fall clean up and winter shrub trimming services. Petros came in as promised and gave a reasonable quote, so we went with him to do the work. He did most of the work himself along with couple of his people. We are glad to have the clean up done before winter sets in.

From the first correspondence to the time the job was done and completed, Justin was a pleasure to work with and we are so happy we hired him. Justin is very professional and knowledgeable. We have two large trees in our front yard that were in desperate need of some trimming. Justin came by for a free estimate, was mindful of our budget, and gave us a very reasonable price. Within 24 hours our trees were trimmed and our yard was left looking better than it had before they came. And as a courtesy to us, they even managed to trim some limbs from a third tree that was on our property. I honestly did not think our trees (or yard) could look as good as it does now after the trimming. We will definitely be using Elite Outdoor Services for all our tree trimming and landscaping needs and highly recommend Justin and his crew.

Gary does excellent work! The bonus is he is also a very nice guy. He saw a Copperhead snake in the area while trimming our hedges and made sure to not only let me know about it but he walked us right over to the area and showed me where to keep an eye out. As a parent with small children, I really appreciated that. I will be hiring him again for additional work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
