We are pleased to recommend highly Dr. Frampton as a math tutor. We chose him because of his impressive resume and skills, not only in math, but also in the sciences. We hoped to develop a relationship with an expert in both math and science who we could call on to help our son during his high school years. We could not be more pleased. Our son found Dr. Frampton's style engaging. He distilled the subject matter to understandable terms and provided concrete examples of how to solve problems. He even scanned some problems and emailed them to us after the session because he did not have time to do so during their review. From a parent's perspective, I really liked hearing Dr. Frampton's assessment of my son's aptitude, the areas he felt needed attention and what he thought our son should do to nail his exam! Finally, I appreciated how Dr. Frampton worked with our schedule to maximize the time he could spend with our son prior to exams. We are sure that this will be a long and fruitful relationship for both of them.

Bruce is an EXCELLENT tutor! After only two weeks of tutoring my daughter, he helped her raise her SAT math score by 80 points. She was thrilled, and so was I. If your child needs a tutor, Bruce is the one!

I hired Candy to help my nephew in math. He's had other tutors but wasn't making much progress. He immediately took to Candy and is very excited about learning again and working with her. Thank you Candy for making learning fun for him.

I am a student at William and Mary studying linguistics and Spanish. I have been playing piano for 10 years and teaching lessons for 5. I have also played guitar for 5 years and taught lessons for 3. In addition, I have experience tutoring youth of all ages, from elementary school to high school. I would say Spanish is my specialty; my knowledge is extensive, especially instructing at the introductory level. I am a straight A student and am competent to tutor most subjects, but I also have particular previous experience in Algebra. Though I am skilled in presenting material from a textbook or workbook clearly along the format of the class, I also enjoy coming up with creative methods for teaching and tutoring and designing my own exercises.

I'm willing to teach and invest in the students to the best of my ability. I am interested taking on fulfilling the goals of the different students.

I am a teacher, and I have taught for 15 years in both middle and high school and can teach both economics and mathematics very well. I can make students who hate math to like it since I always start from the known to the unknown concepts. I also enjoy teaching kids that is why I take my time in doing that.

I became a personal tutor to help people improve on their learning skills. It is difficult to find the time to motivate without a tutor.

I am a researcher at EVMS for summer, but I'm going to VCU for fall (Pharm/Tox MS). My job deals with behavior studies of rats. Before this job, I tutored Stats and Psychology for students at ODU, and worked at the Norfolk Library, helping youth coordinator with activities there.

What I do is I can take care of your pets. I'm also a social studies tutor for kids in or under 5th grade.

I tutor kids in Spanish by reviewing grammatically and conversationally to help them prepare for any exams.

I have a wealth of teaching experience and can tutor in reading/writing for all ages as well as in English as a second language. SAT prep and preparing for SOL testing is one of my specialties as well. Most importantly, I really care about my students and have the ability to make connections, so that they can really learn and understand!

I am a college student studying mechanical engineering technology. I can teach up to Calculus 1. I just need to know what material is needed to be taught.

I'm a college graduate who specialize in various tutoring services such as math, reading, spelling, computer skills, video editing and basketball/track training. The kids are our future, so why not instill knowledge into them and show them that learning can be fun! Miss Jasmine's Wiz Kidz are the best and children can make the big bucks as adults.

I provide one-on-one in-depth assistance with homework, test preparation, and reading comprehension. I am well versed in anatomy and ethics as well.

I have a master's degree in counseling and a PGP professional license from the State of Virginia. I can tutor Math. Also, I am presently a substitute K-12 teacher for Source4Teachers at Hampton City Schools.

We offer elementary and high school Spanish tutoring. Up to intermediate college level tutoring is also available.

I am a native Spanish speaker and I am great with people. I am very patient and I believe that learning can be fun. I especially enjoy teaching people who are interested in learning a new language.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
