Having never used a private investigator before I was very apprehensive. But I had exhausted all of my resources to obtain some sensitive information. Chris at Blueline Investigation Services was very professional and outlined several action plans to determine which would best suit my needs quickly and economically. He was very personable and understanding of my situation. He got the information to me very quickly and also gave me some great advice. If I ever need a private investigator again I will not hesitate to call Chris. He did an excellent job!!!!

I recently took the Private Investigator Course (required by DCJS to become registered as a P.I. in Virginia) with Eagle Security Solutions. Eagle provides hands on training (the owner is directly involved in your success) as well as classroom instruction. The instructors are professional and make the class fun (by the time it ended I was sad). They make sure you have the knowledge needed to be successful in your new career and demand as much out of you as they put into the course. I plan on taking a number of additional course with them in the future.

I was in need of investigative services and came upon Alpha Group Investigations through an acquaintance of mine, who reccommended them. Their office is located 765 W. Little Creek Rd. in Norfolk. The staff was courteous and the building was warm and inviting. I met with the Head Investigator and began to lay out plans to complete what I had requested. The pricing for the services were competitive and actually quite good for the area. The timeline was established and all pertinent information received by both parties. The job I had requested was completed within the requested parameters with a plethora of photographic, video, and professional documentation. Alpha Group, for a newer company, is a breath of fresh air to the investigative market. I would highly recommend them for a variety of investigative needs.

I would not hesitate to recommend Jason at Insight Intergated Investigations. He will handle your case with a level of professionalism that is second to none. I believe what makes him so proficient as a private investigator is his years of experience as a police officer. When you need facts that will hold up in the court of law with honesty and integrity, you need to call Jason at Insight.

Outstanding company!!! We called them to assist us in setting up an LLC. and other legal documents that we needed, and they did an excellent job. We then found out that they could do so many other services, like notarizing documents, background checks, investigations, and human resources for our company. They also surprised us by assisting a few of our employees with financial solutions and real estate investing. I recommend that if you are needing any of the services I mentioned, that you give them a call. Even if you need a service that I did not mention call and inquire, you may just find what you need. We keep them on speed dial. Customer service is excellent also! DCS LLC.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

    • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
    • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
    • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
