Bill Pow knows Geometry!! Bill was very prompt in responding to the initial Thumbtack correspondence. We were set with initial appointment within a couple days. He spent hours with our daughter in this first visit. He has been patient and concise in his review of difficult geometry concepts and sticks with the material until he is certain the concept is mastered. Our daughter has received a 94% and a 91% on that past two exams she has taken since working with Bill. She had a failing average before she began working with Mr. Pow. Mr. Pow's rate is very reasonable, and he has been flexible with scheduling. My husband, our daughter and myself could not have asked for a better outcome! Highly recommend! as Bill Knows Math!!

Let me start out by saying that I am NOT a "math person." I've always struggled in all my math classes (Except geometry that involved shapes and vocabulary. Go-figure.) This semester I had to take Calculus for Social Management at George Washington University. I soon realized that I was falling behind, and not understanding the professor or the concepts. I was beyond lucky to find Nema. We spoke on the phone for only 30 minutes the night before our first session- and he proved how much he could help me in such a short time. Nema is an incredible professor. He helped me quickly find my strengths and weaknesses- and is incredibly patient. We reviewed each concept- and the ones I did not understand he was able to explain multiple different ways, and effortlessly provide different example problems. I went from not understanding 90% of the class and having to constantly refer to my notes; to knowing each rule and types of problems inside and out. We worked together many hours to prepare for my midterm- and after many sessions with Nema, that was the first time I had ever taken a math test without freezing up on a problem. I knew exactly what to do without hesitation. Nema is an amazing professor, has a great sense of humor, and clearly loves what he does and it shows!

Mr. Mougy Ahmed has done wonders as a math tutor for our sophomore son! He has a very agreeable, non-threatening tutoring style, and our son enjoyed working with him right away. Our son was getting D's and C's in Algebra II , even with the assistance of a previous math tutor. Mougy came to our house and immediately recognized where our son was misunderstanding foundational concepts in Algebra II, and worked with him to build up that knowledge base and apply those skills correctly. He has been highly responsive in setting up tutoring sessions, sending additional lessons/exercises via email, and even holding extra sessions in advance of math tests/quizzes. As a direct result of Mougy's tutoring, our son earned a B+ and an A on his last two math tests. We highly recommend him to any student or parent who is searching for tutoring assistance.

Ben Schwabb/physics & engineering tutor is a real professional: knowledgable, concise, thorough, and presents a well-planned lesson each time. He helped my high schooler pull up his physics grade dramatically and pre-taught an electrical engineering course to my college-age son to get a jumpstart on his fall class. Alex/director is extremely responsive, provides quality tutors quickly, and stays in contact to ensure client satisfaction. Every company should operate this way.

With so many options for ACT and SAT preparation, it can be frustrating for parents trying to choose the best option for their children. We didn't have particularly high expectations at the beginning, which is why we were so pleasantly surprised when our son went up 380 points after only about 6 lessons. Based on our experience, Arbor Tutors is a premium service that delivers above and beyond what you pay. We were immediately impressed by their extensive knowledge of the testing process. Worth every penny.

Gaston Lopez has been an awesome tutor. He helped my daughter go from a C to an A in Geometry. He helped her go from an B to an A in history. This year he helped her understand her trigonometry to become more consistant with her test scores. Gaston explains to the students on their level so they understand the concepts. I am really amazed with this young man ability to work with young people. I am very thankful for him and so is my daughter.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
