I hired Payne's Tree Service to trim/prune trees and shrubs. I couldn't be more pleased with their service. First, they were prompt in their response to a quote, coming on site to provide final estimate and were very curteous and professional. Second, the job has been completed and they did everything they said they would do, offerring their advice along the way. I will definitely hire them again and plan to let my community know of my experience.

They did a great job cleaning up my back yard. I had originally only asked for mowing but when Reinaldo came by to give me an estimate I asked about pruning some overgrown shrubs. The quote was seemed very reasonable and I'm glad that I gave them a chance because it proved to be a great value. They came by the next day while I was at work and hedges look so much better. Great job on the lawn and pruning, will definitely be contacting them again in the future!

We moved into a new house with a backyard that had grown pretty wild--David took care of tree pruning, tree removal, and removing a huge old pile of logs in our backyard. I appreciated that David was on time and professional-- also had competitive rates-- he came out twice for estimates at no cost. I will hire again for more landscaping work.

Gennaro came the same day of my request and gave me a quote for cutting my lawn, trimming and edging the flower beds, walkways and driveway. He came back the next morning and performed the work. He was thorough and extremely pleasant to deal with. He even air blew all the areas after cutting which made it look polished. Thank you Gennaro for doing such a nice job.

First time user of Thumbtack - was very impressed with Enrique and his team at eTrees when we hired him to remove a broken branch off a tall 30-year pine tree in our backyard. We literally submitted a request via Thumbtack, got in touch with Enrique within 30mins, and he was here the next day. Prior to using Thumbtack I had looked to 2 other places for estimate via yelp! Will definitely look to his company for future needs and happy to post my recommendation here. Pics for before, during, and after the trimming.

Outstanding! Professional, timely. One of the things that impressed me most is that he truly listened to what I wanted. I ended up with a maintenance free lawn with stone beds and gorgeous plants that will come back or continue to grow each year - No Pruning. I took pictures of several things at the nursery to choose from and he did the rest. Great family man and great landscaper. He will be back to add needed grass seed and prune trees at the right time. It will be a pleasure to see him again.

Before I hired Livity Works, I got a few so estimates from other Thumbtack vendors. I ultimately hire Livity Works because they were most professional, responsive, courteous, and fair. Ryan spent a few hours pruning and removing several trees and overgrown shrubs. He cleaned the area well afterwards and there wasn’t any debris left behind. I recommend this company.

Franks Tree Service_Francisco Rivera id a great job here on Kimberly Way in Winchester Va. In 2 days around a parking lot full off cars they completed the pruning of 36 25 foot tall trees and the complete removal of one. They did exactly what they were asked to do and the way we wanted it done without question in a very timely manor. We had thousands of starlings craping all over every thing and was getting dangerous for children to be outside playing so Francisco Rivera was Johnny on the spot and Thank You Men for being so careful around the children and cars.

We have been using M&L for 15 years plus to provide mulching, spring clean-up, planting, and pruning of bushes and low trees. M&L honors its estimates, arrives as scheduled unless rain disrupted completion of work elsewhere, and finishes on time. The crews that Mitch Lachin has employed over the years have been competent, friendly, and respectful of the property. Mitch is quite honest and a devout individual who provides a quality work product.

We are a long time customer with this wonderful group of people. G&G provides many services to help obtain and maintain a beautiful, weed-free lawn and garden. Our yard is mowed and edged on a regular schedule. Other maintenance services are provided such as pre-emergents, fertilizer, thatching and grass seed throughout the year. Plants are pruned and garden beds are cleaned of leaves when needed. In addition, we also had our home power-washed by G&G. Windows and trim were handwashed which we were exceptionally pleased with. The owner is very knowledgeable on weed invasion, plants and trees. His crew is dependable, professional, and respectful of the property they work on. Prices are competitive. One thing that makes this company stand out from others is that they are very focused on customer satisfaction. That is their top priority.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
