Working with Monte Johnson has proven to me the value of working with an expert trainer and "body whisperer" (there is just no other word for it) to stay fit and injury-free. I first met Monte when he was recommended by my doctor for my teenage son's back pain. My son had always played competitive baseball, and was quite good, but became plagued with back pain the summer before his junior year of high school. Monte worked with my son to identify key areas to focus strength training as well as to correct some form issues that were causing him pain. Together with a batting coach he was able to play and remain pain-free. As an added bonus his batting improved tremendously. Two years later I called on Monte to help me. I am relatively fit and have never needed motivation to work out. But every few months I would end up with some back pain or injury and in a funk because I couldn't go to the gym until the pain resolved itself. I was regularly going to the doctor to have him stretch my tight back and re-adjust my spine. Monte changed the way I thought about personal trainers. Using his expertise and insight he began to assess my strengths and weaknesses, finding imbalances that I hadn't realized existed. Then with carefully selected exercises he began to correct years of bad form, poor posture, and other habits. Each time we met he would re-access and reassign new exercises. Often he would realize that I had tight muscles that I wasn't aware of - until he released them. My whole body would feel looser and my joints more free. It was liberating and felt great. After 6 months I was clearly stronger than in past years when I had been weight training more seriously and far younger. Plus I was largely pain-free. And importantly, if I did strain a muscle he gave me the tools to recover faster and assess the issue. I could feel the results all day of a stronger, more balanced body. I have never needed someone to motivate me. But even with all of my self-learning and research, I could never replicate the experience Monte brought to each visit. He made do things that were hard. But I have also never had as much fun at the gym with some of the strength training that Monte encouraged me to do. Monte is not one of those trainers that you see at the local gym who dole out the same routine to each client they get and yell the count down of pain as I call it "Give me 10, 9, 8, YEAH, 7, 6, 5, FOUR MORE BABY,... I never thought those individuals were worth my time and money and that hasn't changed. But what you will get with Monte is very different. You will get a session that is uniquely designed to you and your body's needs, and you will never feel better.
