I would recommend this company to anyone. The plumbing job was hard work but he didn't leave until the job was done. I will definitely use this company in the future.

I am very happy for the price and service that Ron’s Plumbing Company has provided. Thank you Nate and Jose for your hard work, and thank you Ron for your clear communication! I must be honest that initially I was very skeptical, and was judging them because I had a previous bad experience with a small business. The few bad reviewers on Yelp and Thumbtack made me even more uncomfortable. I asked lots of questions, and Ron answered all of them patiently, without getting offended. He explained to me that many years ago, the company was bigger and some of the employees were not doing their jobs as they were supposed to, hence the bad reviews. Since a year ago, Ron has decided to size down the company because of his health. He only hires people that he trusts, and since then all reviews have been positive. Finally, it was the big discount that convinced me to give them a try. I had another company from Chesapeake coming over, quoting $1500 more than Ron’s company for the same project. That company is bigger with all the inspectors wearing professional uniforms, but I thought I should not pay that much money just for the uniforms. My previous bad experience was with T&C Maintenance. In April of 2015, I had a blockage of my laundry drain. It was through Thumbtack that I hired Tom from T&C Maintenance to fix the problem. Tom came 2-3 times, and finally was able to make the gray water run again with his mechanical snakes. He was very courteous and charged me less than $100. I left a great review for T&C Maintenance. However, just after 2 usages, the laundry drain became clogged again. Since my family was traveling out of the country in the summer, I did not contact Tom until August. Tom (the father of T&C) said the cast iron pipes may have become too old, and it was likely that the pipes were rusting from inside out. He offered a great price to replace ~25’ of pipes with PVC for $275. When I called T&C again for the project, it was the son Chris who picked up the phone. He looks exactly like Tom. He explained that Tom has decided not to do any crawlspace work because he has got prostate cancer. Instead of $275, he charged me $660 for the work, saying that materials alone would cost more than $300. Being a first time house owner with no idea what could be going on in the mysterious crawl space, I trusted him. Five months after, I started to smell something foul from the crawl. The bad odor comes and goes, so I did not pay too much attention until my termite inspector noticed me the problem in Late June. When I called T&C again, without knowing who I was Chris said he would come to my house the next day at 6:00 pm. When I texted him my address and explained that he was here last November, however, he never showed up. When I texted him more, he blocked me from his phone. I finally decided that I should venture to the crawl myself, so that I will not be fooled by dishonest people. What outraged me is that when I was there, I saw the cast iron pipes that T&C has replaced, my dryer vent cap that disappeared since T&C visited, a water bottle, and some random garbage. I did ask Chris to take out the replaced cast iron pipes, to which he responded it was not standard for plumbers to take them out, and there are a lot of other parts in the crawl. The truth is, I could find no other trash other than the ones I have mentioned above. If I could review T&C again, I will give it a big thumb down. Don’t get fooled by the innocent looking faces. When I first met Nate from Ron’s company, as I said, I was not trusting him very much. For one, his name never appeared on Thumbtack. For another, I thought he talked too much for Jose, who I was told speaks perfect English, has good reviews on Thumbtack, and was supposed to be the team leader. I was under the impression that Nate was taking advantage of him, with him doing the sweet talks to get my money, while Jose does the dirty job. I was wrong. They both worked very hard, and very often it was Nate who crawls under there to do the difficult jobs. Eventually they charged me $1100, which included installing an additional 10’ of PVC pipe (because apparently the entire length has become rusty, fragile or with holes), and cutting up and removing the cast iron pipes left by T&C. Nate took a lot of pictures to show what it was like in the crawl space after the work was done. He also showed me the holes on the cast iron pipes he has replaced. I also appreciate him giving me professional advices a few times. For example, I wanted to keep the replaced sand for my garden, but he said that sand is contaminated with the mold-killing chemicals and bad for plants. I would have never thought of that. I have full confidence that they have done a great job. I will hire them again in the future.

Everything about my experience was great. The repairs were quoted reasonably, the quoted completion time was fast and completed on time and the quality of the work was fantastic. His professional knowledge allowed me to utilize him for many jobs including plumbing, windows, and pressure washing my house which lead to a great presentation for my final walkthrough prior to closing on my house.

These fine gentlemen were very accommodating with the labor required to install a new water heater. They kept us informed of changes in schedule and even provided invaluable insight for future reference of plumbing issues to watch out for. They were courteous and professional, very easy to work with and took the time to explain what would need to be done, new materials required, and existing materials that could be reused to save a little. The best part was the fact that they came and got the job done in a little over an hour A DAY EARLIER THAN EXPECTED! No one likes a cold shower, so when Scott said he could be here the same day we couldn't have been happier! I will be calling them again for sure! Great job!!

Had a major line clog that needed to be solved by snaking a plumbing vent on my roof. I'm sure glad I didn't have to carry that 80-lbs snake to the roof. But the A-1 tech did it, safely, found the clog and fixed my problem. They are the only plumbers I will use.

This was for a dryer vent cleaning for rental move out. The dryer duct and outside vent were on the the second floor, which was not a problem for the tech. A bristle head on a long plastic flex rod was attached to a power tool adds used to thoroughly clean the duct which was about 6 feet long. Greg continued to clean the duct until no more dust came out or was visible. No complaints!

Hands down the fastest and most professional response I've ever received, not to mention an amazing value to boot. Mr. Carrington is honestly one of the best service providers I've ever used on any of my properties. I highly recommend his company above all the other chain store plumbers around. A+ rating from me.

Anthony arrived when he said he would. He then assessed the situation and found the problem. My faucet was leaking from the handle. We discussed my options and I elected to buy a new faucet and he installed it. Anthony was fair in price and I will definitely use him again with any of my plumbing needs.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

        • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
        • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
        • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
        • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
        • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

        • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
        • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
        • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
