My focus in tutoring is on the success of my students, not on the clock. While I charge an hourly rate, it is not uncommon for me to go over the stated time without charging extra. Sometimes we're close to a break-through and I don't want to lose the momentum. Other times we may have lost a few minutes during the lesson so I purposely go over. Or maybe we get so focused that we lose track of time. This focus on helping clients become successful, led to the Dole Academy method. Prior to the first lesson, I will meet with my new student and interested adults. We will discuss specific tutoring goals, learning strengths, learning weaknesses, preferred methods of learning and any other information considered important. During this consultation, I will assess the learner in all areas requested. In addition to looking for inability to perform skills, I will look for patterns. My goal is to determine WHY the learner is having difficulty. I will also watch the strategies the learner uses to find answers. I will then use all information gathered to create a custom learning plan for the learner. The plan will include the client's goals as well as timelines for reaching them. An individualized curriculum will be created for each student. Before every lesson, a lesson plan will be written to ensure our time together will be productive and will produce gains toward the outlined goals. Another benefit I offer is telephone help between sessions. When students have difficulty at school, they can't wait for a scheduled session time to get help. I give all my students my home telephone number and my e-mail address. I encourage my students to contact me anytime they have a question. I don't charge for this type of help for my regularly scheduled students. I also communicate with my student's teachers and schools. I believe it is important for me to speak with teachers to discover what they are seeing in the classroom. I try to stay in-touch with teachers on a regular basis. They can give me an insight as to what impact the tutoring is having at school as well as give me suggestions as to possible weaknesses that need attention. I can give input to teachers about tendencies and traits I may have noticed working with the student one-on-one that they may not be aware of. I have attended IEP meetings and other meetings with school personnel.See more
