Erik and his crew did an awesome work in replacing our kitchen countertop and bathrooms. They were so patient while we were in the process of choosing the stone we like. They were very professional, honest and courteous, too. The quality of work was just amazing and the time they took was unbelievable! Our kitchen changed its look in less than 3 hours! I definitely give 5 stars! We were satisfied with the price as well! Erik is often fast at reaponding to phone call or texts. I definitely recommend GENESIS Granite & Marble services to all my friends and family! Thanks a lot guys!

I needed to remove an old retaining wall that was falling down and rotting. It was made of railway ties and was 70' long and 5-6' high. Julio and his crew did a great job without complaining. The job turned out to be much bigger than anticipated. All the work had to be done by hand including the removal of 80 old HEAVY ties from a steep hill. They also had to carry most of the stone and fill in 5 gallon buckets due to the location of a shed and the collapsing hillside. The wall itself collapsed adding to the difficulty. Add to that the nasty cold and rainy weather and it was not fun. They replaced the wall with new 6x6x8 treated landscape timber and reinforced it with posts in concrete. They also installed a drainage system which the first wall did not have. Throughout it all, they had a tremendous attitude and were promising that the job would get done and that they wanted to do it right. Julio did not ask for more money than his bid(even though the job probably took twice as long as planned). I did voluntarily give him additional funds. It was well worth it and the wall looks great. I now have confidence that my shed and house will not be sliding down the steep hill into the creek.

Ricardo and his team were awesome. They went above and beyond to make sure that we had the patio that we wanted. It started day one, the crew showed up and removed a massive amount of debris, I wish I had photos of before they got there. The crew worked quickly and did a great job. The patio ended up being bigger than the original bid and Ricardo finished the project without increasing the cost. There were a couple of concerns that we had and he quickly came out and was able to make a couple small tweaks and things look amazing. I would definitely hire him and his crew again and would recommend them to anyone looking for a stone patio.

We wanted to have the existing mantel and surrounding stone removed so we could showcase our high ceiling with a floor to ceiling fireplace facade. Slav, of ProModern Masonry, was one of a few to reply to our post. He was the only one willing to provide a very loose estimate based on the dimensions we provided, and a product we were interested in. Once we received the primary estimate we knew it was a job we wanted to move forward on, and invited three companies to come and estimate on it. Slav understood clearly what it was we wanted, and explained to us options we had not considered. His knowledge and professionalism was very encouraging, we knew if the estimates were at all close we would go with him. To our surprise, even with additional work (to make it all more secure) his estimate came in quite a bit less than the others. He spent two days one week prepping the space, and two days the next week placing the mantel and surrounding stone. We couldn't be happier with the finished product. If we have any masonry needs in the future we will definitely call ProModern Masonry.

Kevin and his crew were awesome. We initially hired them to cover some of our brick exterior with Stucco. There was a mix-up with how the color appeared once it was applied but Kevin helped to get that cleared up and we are really happy with his work. We ended up also hiring Kevin to replace our old asphalt driveway with concrete and once again he and his team knocked it out of the park. I will definitely be using Kevin again for any future projects that his team can do.

We hired Erol and his team to remodel our ground floor (800 sq ft) and the bathroom in the master bedroom. That included the entire floor plan with Porcelain tiles, 3 door frames+baseboards, cabinets, subway tiles for 50-sq-ft wall and painting. From the initial design, choosing the materials, to the completion of the project, Erol and his team performed careful and detailed work that has gone beyond our satisfaction. The project was completed in time as agreed in the contract.

David did a great job on our bathroom. He understood our needs and didn't take short cuts. He had great product knowledge and wasn't intimidated by our desire for epoxy grout on the walls and pebble stone tile floors. He gave great advice and did beautiful work. Totally reliable, trustworthy, and honest.

I highly recommend Ken for any tile and stone work to be done. I had Ken Smith remodel both my bathrooms with marble tile, and installing granite counter tops. His craftmanship is world class, he's so easy to work with, and was totally willing to work with me to meet all my needs. He took so much extra care in installing all the tile, and the bathrooms came out beautiful, definitely world class work. I definitely could see in his workmanship the extra attention to detail and the time and care he took to make sure the tile is laid out in the most visually appealing manner possible. He listens to my needs and takes extra care to make my vision a reality. Ken is super easy to work with, and very accomodating. There are always road blocks, and problems that come up during a construction process. Everytime something comes up, he would give me a call and work with me to make sure problems are resolved. Ken finishes his work on time, on budget, and with exceptional quality. I highly recommend Ken to anyone who wants their tile and stone work done.

We have worked with Matt for the last two summers, and will tackle the third and final phase of our project this summer, 2016. Matt and his crew installed a stone path with steps down to our back gate, and a stone staircase up a steep slope from our back yard to our front, on the side of our house. The design included planting beds and lighting. MLG selected plantings for the pathway, and made recommendations for future plantings. Matt also built three garden boxes for our yard, out of sturdy and beautiful juniper. We so appreciated Matt working within our budget, and helping us break up our project into workable phases. We are excited to watch as the plantings fill in. This summer will see the design and installation of a new back gate, and more landscaping. It has been a pleasure to work with Matt and his crew. They were timely, worked hard, and cleaned up as they went. Matt was easy to get hold of, and always responsive. A great experience!

Beyond impressed. Outstanding working. He went above and beyond. Shopping for the stones, having them delivered himself (cost $90 from the store). It took longer than expected but well worth the wait. Very easy to work with.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
