I found Nolan via Thumbtack when I needed to wall mount 2 of my televisions on different rooms. Nolan and Tim were simple amazing. They were thoroughly professional and did the job to perfection. They also carefully analyzed the walls to ensure they did the right thing when they were applying screws and not touch any power or water lines. One happy customer and I would not hesitate to give them a call back when I am ready with my next to do list. Totally recommend.  Bonus-  Nolan speaks great Hindi too :-)

The plumbers (Eric and Jackie) showed up on time at the job site in Bellevue and got the dishwasher running within 5 minutes. While they were running the dishwasher through it cycles I told Eric I was having a final plumbing inspection on the hot water heater and Eric looked at the installed tank. He informed me that it was not up to code (missing expansion tank) and it would fail inspection. I asked him if he could bring it up to code to pass the inspection that was schedueled for noon. He said he would need to get the part and it would take about 20 minutes to install the expansion tank. Eric installed the tank and was cleaned up and gone about 30 minutes before the inspection (which passed). As I work for a national property management company and deal with multiple water leaks annually we will be using Danika Plumbing on future projects.

James was great. He responded to our inquiry within 1 hour, didn't charge for a consultation and determined that a puddle in our basement wasn't caused by our water heater. We'll be in touch with him when we do actually run into an issue with our water heater.

Gil Bernard was great! He instantly determined the install wasn't done properly and within ten seconds noticed there was a leak. The copper pipe was leaking due to improper pipe installation and soldering. He replaced the pipe and ameliorated other issues with the install and serviced our tankless water heater. We will certainly call him again for any plumbing or other issues in the future. Steve Wise

Honest Air Systems (H.A.S.) came out last Fall when we were trying to figure out why the heater was not getting electrical power. H.A.S. took a look and determined that it was a power transformer in our heating unit that has not working any longer. The part was ordered and replaced within a few days. The heater worked just fine throughout the Winter. I'm sure that if I had called a big company, the bill would have been double what we paid. Honest Air Systems has low overhead so they can provide excellent value, does professional work, and provides great service.

We had our gas furnace and water heater replaced. They came on time and replaced everything as described. We ended up including an ac coil for future hookup which they also did. It has been a week and everything seems to be working fine. Price was fair and reasonable. We will probably call on them again when and if we decide to add the ac.

The worker H2Flow sent (Hassan Baker) was highly skilled and meticulous. Big smile and friendly! Dogs didn’t bark which is always a tell! We have a 6,400 sq ft home with complex systems that includes on-demand instant hot water. We have a small hot water tank that eliminates what he called “cold water sandwich “, an occurrence that’s common for tankless water heaters. I didn’t want to entrust this job to just anyone and did my research and went with H2Flow. I couldn’t have been more satisfied. The workmanship was exceptional! AAA+++

John put in a new water line to a refrigerator in an older home that wasn't previously set up for one. John answered my call right away and scheduled a visit quickly. He did a great job at a fair price. Hope I don't need a plumber again soon but would definitely recommend him and would call on him again when needed.

It was excellent experience working with Washington Natural Gas. Everything went smoothly and pleasant. One of our water heaters stopped working after 8 years life. I submitted work request on Thumbtack 11:00pm at night, then got a phone call from Mike at Washing Natural Gas next day morning. Mike was super friendly and knowledgeable. He provided all the options what we could do and offered a free estimate at our convinient time. 2 days later Eric and Andrew installed a new water heater for us. After the work was done, Eric walked me through in details what they did and cleaned up the working area. Eric also put a sticky note on the water tank with warranty information on it which is really helpful. We are very pleased with Washington Natural Gas and will definetly work with them again in the future.

Last year David replaced our heat pump. He warned us our furnace would not be far behind. A month ago during the hottest days of the year it gave up. David was my first call. He is very polite, friendly and professional. His work is high in quality and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend him for any AC, furnace, or water heater issues. Plus he is just a great guy.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
