Scott is a very informed, experienced, and personable guitar instructor. He has a great ear, and and even better ability to pick out your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. I went into my lessons with Scott with a few years of guitar playing experience, but not much knowledge of music theory or even knowing scales. He did a great job of creating lessons and catering to what I wanted to learn. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who wants to learn more about guitar, from beginners to advanced! Thanks Scott!

I’ve been studying guitar with Mary for about two months now, and I can’t say enough good about her. tl;dr: Mary will understand and support your goals for guitar playing, and she is beyond capable of helping you reach those goals. First, Mary is very supportive and cognizant of my goals as a musician. If I had a song in mind that I wanted to learn, I’m absolutely sure she would help me learn it. As a beginner, however, I don’t have anything in mind and happily play the tunes she gives me. Speaking of tunes, she has so many on hand. Every week she gives me new sheets with songs that cover the technique we work on. Mary’s extensive lesson repertoire certainly helps fulfill my goal of expanding my musical vocabulary to more artists and genres, all while developing my skills on guitar. Similar to her supportiveness, Mary is also very understanding yet insistent. As a busy young adult, on average I work eight to ten hours a day and follow a daily workout regimen to boot. While my goal is to practice guitar at least 60 minutes per day, on many days I don’t have time and fall short. Despite less-than-ideal practice, Mary accommodatingly works around the progress I make (or don’t make). At each lesson I can consistently expect help with last week’s trouble areas in addition to new material — Mary sure likes to press on. Can you blame her? There’s technique to master and songs to learn! :) On her teaching style, Mary is very creative. She customizes her lessons to the individual, and — I really like this about her — she tells me exactly what she wants to cover at the next two or three lessons. This way I know what she’ll teach, and I have the opportunity to discuss what I want to learn (e.g. scales, barre chords, etc.). With decades of guitar study under her belt, she can teach anything. By “teach” I mean make you really understand. She has countless analogies, anecdotes, and demonstrations for helping you learn or improve any technique. She’ll try things until it “clicks” for you. Teaching creativity like Mary’s is an invaluable skill that will undoubtedly help any student she has. To end on a light note, Mary truly is a spectacular musician. Her playing is effortless and always a joy to hear. She makes even the beginning things I’m working on sound musical and fun to play. Mary is a gem of a teacher, and I can’t recommend her enough.

I have not been taking lessons too long with Ed, but so far have found him: 1) accommodating with scheduling; 2) willing to work at the pace of his students; 3) quick to give suggestions on how to improve one's practice; 4) interested in his students as individuals; and 5) a great value for the $.

Started guitar lessons a couple of months ago and couldn't be happier. I was self taught and played by ear. Didn't feel I had time for lessons. But, I was missing a lot of the fundamentals. The lessons have started to fill in the gaps and I'm learning a lot faster than before. I wish I started these lessons a couple of years ago. And way too easy taking these lessons at my place. Highly recommended!

Lauri is an excellent piano teacher. My daughter has been taken piano since she was 3. I have 3 girls learning and they love her. Lauri is patient with the kids. She has a way to keep the kids busy while the other is learning. Also, she has a technique to teach the preschoolers and they tend to advance really fast. The kids always look forward to every lesson. They love to perform everytime there's an opportunity. Thanks for teaching my girls.

I really enjoy music lessons with Jacob, I've had several teachers and he is by far the easiest to work with and to learn from. He's a great guitar player and keeps the lessons fun, he also does a good job at making sure that what I'm practicing has something to do with what I'm interested in. I've had teachers in the past that did not make guitar interesting, Jacob is great, well worth the money! I'm much better than I was before I started with him.

My daughter has only had two lessons with Aaron, so I do not have a long term relationship to base my review on. However, I can say that Aaron was very prompt at returning my emails and phone calls . Very professional in how he approached making financial arrangements and scheduling our lessons. He provided references for me to check with. He offered a complementary initial lesson. And perhaps most important, when I pick up my daughter from her lesson she has a smile on her face and says Aaron is very nice.

Mariya was my piano teacher for over 13 years, and during this time, she was instrumental in my musical upbringing. She not only taught me how to play the piano but how to understand and enjoy music that I could make. Under her guidance, I quickly won my first piano competition at the young age of 7, and received the honor of performing at the Washington state recital. I would continue to win this distinction for many years afterwards. Even though I began my lessons at a young age, Mariya, however, is not known for babying her students. She applies pressure wherever she sees deficiency and helps her students grow into fine musicians. This is certainly evident from the success of her students. The unique relationship between teacher and student is not one that should be taken lightly; after all, music is such an intimate production. Thus, in many regards, the great success of Mariya's teaching comes not only because of her own skills and knowledge but also because of her genuine care of her students. She was like my second mother! I can say without a doubt that Mariya is among the finest piano teachers in the state and indubitably the best in Snohomish County!

Our daughter has taken voice lessons with Aaron for about 3 years and really loves her time in his studio. Aaron has a wonderful ability to connect and has really helped her become the confident singer she is today. Bitterlake Studio is an extremely warm, positive, safe and inspriring environment and Aaron is the most supportive teacher. He is a very talented musician and a passionate and artistic person. His presence puts her at ease with a confidence to explore her strenghts and weaknesses. We are so grateful for Aaron making it a challenging but very fun learning experience for our daughter.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
