Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do you move large pieces of furniture?

Moving large furniture can be done with help from the best movers in your area and careful planning. First, get an idea of how much the furniture weighs and how much each mover can manage. The next step is figuring out the path the furniture will take as it exits its point of origin and makes its way to its new home. Professional movers then use dollies, furniture protectors and personal safety gear for a safe, smooth move.

Best movers I have ever used and that’s saying a lot. Was in the military for 20+ yeas and moved numerous times. By far the most professional and curious movers I have ever used. They went above and beyond to make my move quick and easy. I plan to use them the next time I move.

The movers were fast, updated me frequently, and were able to disassemble and assemble the bed frames quickly. Dominic was also fast in responding when I was shopping around for different movers which led me to pick Let’s Move. I would definitely recommend these movers to friends or family.

Highly recommend this moving company! We were moving and needed a quick turnaround move service (within a week) and the team was quick with their responses and happy to help. Called on Nov 5th for a move on Nov 12th. They sent a team of three (Josue, Marvin, and Maria M.) who quickly cleared out our third floor, 3 bedroom apartment with no elevator. I was quoted from other movers that my move would take 4+ hours…but I knew that couldn’t be the case and this team did it under 2 hours!!!! Can not express enough at how impressed we were! Thank you 4 Seasons team!!!!

They let me know they would be a bit late due to previous moves and when they arrived, worked quickly and safely. Moving a piano is no joke and their communication with each other made it look like a breeze.

Josias was quick to respond to request, was able to get item scheduled for move during a time that worked for me. They moved an awkward treadmill, had to disassemble and reassemble in order to get it through doors. Were able to reassemble effectively without incident.

Hired 2 movers to help with small house move. 1 guy never showed up, so the owners agreed to a deal at a reduced rate if I helped. Q was a Rockstar and was kind and compassionate, we knocked out the job in an efficient manner. Still waiting on final invoice the day after, but I'm sure they'll get to it on Monday.

Jake and his team started out rough…not his fault. The company where he rented the truck didn’t have it as promised. I was pretty adamant that this had to be done that day as everything was planned. Jake redeemed himself by not only making sure everything was done but done in a timely manner. He made the company find a truck from another location. Even though we didn’t start on time he kept me in the loop. He was courteous, responsive, and went the extra mile to make sure everything was done that was needed. Roma’s who was working with him was very professional and a pleasure to speak with. They both worked extremely hard. They packed the truck very professionally and there wasn’t anything damaged during the move. They even moved my commercial norditrack treadmill and sleep-number bed with 0 issues. After seeing how hard Jake worked to make sure the move was done on time, even with events out of his control I would hire him again. Small business owners who do whatever they can to keep a business name and the customer happy are a gem to our community. If you ever need a referral I would be happy to provide one.

NOT generous NOT $100/ hour — but “per job” Even though we took care of items off the list — he wasn’t willing to move 2 cabinets (instead of the piano and several dressers — that we paid him for and did without him) He is kind & careful & efficient. Communicate very clearly about the whole job you want done. List everything up front. Pay AFTER it’s all completed.

June responded right away to my request (move tomorrow, small window to get it done between our trailer being dropped off and the storage space access restrictions, right before the Labor Day weekend). We traded emails then discussed the job on a call. June juggled things and really worked with us to make it happen. June manned the job himself with Sio, a professional and tireless worker. These guys hit the ground running and didn't stop until the job was done. To maximize available space they rearranged some items I had previously put in the storage unit and took care with our many fragile items and furniture. I saw that they considered the weight of boxes in determining how they should be stacked, and padded finished surfaces without prompting. These are just a couple of small details that quickly gave me confidence that they were both professional and knowledgeable, and cared enough not to cut corners. I would recommend these guys to anyone looking for heavy lifters with the skills and great attitude to trust with your moving needs.

Mike and Kodie arrived on time and got to work. There were all business. I had a quote for about 8 hours at 90 dollars an hour plus 1.5 hour travel time being quoted around $800. The guys arrived did an inventory of what they would be taking and began disassembling some items and loading the truck. They even moved an entire bedroom set that wasn't on the initial bid and I didn't think they would be able to fit it in. They did it, clearing the house of my items in 2 hours. They unloaded and assembled just as fast as they packed. It was fast but done with lots of care. Many of the items were wrapped for their protection. Kodie and Mike completed the job in about 4 hours with the 1.5 hours of travel time for $495. Due to a clerical error that I wouldn't have noticed they said they charged me too much and would be sending me back a check for $180 resulting in the $495 final price. The move went flawlessly without these guys; I would had to use a Uhaul and that wasn't an option. I would use them again any day, they were about their business and very professional. Danee

Total pros. Andrew and his girlfriend came at exactly the scheduled time and my mother and I gave each other a sideways glance as we couldn't believe these two could move a PIANO! Bit the DID it all on two special ramps he had brought. They wrapped it up and had it out the door, across the lawn and in the truck in about 15 min. We were dumbfounded. Andre then played a few keys on our new piano and we have him coming back to tune it. All for an amazing price.
