Emerald City provided an amazing buffet dinner for 50 of our friends. We had a party at Populuxe brewing and they created a fantastic summer menu to fit our budget. Highly recommend using them for your party.

Chantel worked with me to create a brunch menu for my wedding. The food turned out great. Food was set up on time and replenished promptly as guests took food from the buffet style set up. Only wish was that we were offered some of the leftover food to take home.

Francisco was better than I could have possibly hoped for. I had a last minute need for a caterer for dinner for my husband's 50th birthday party, AND needed several accommodations for a variety of food allergies. Not only did Francisco respond to my request quickly and provide delectable allergen free Mexican dinner buffet for 16, he communicated with me to get clarity on the food issues and arrived early, with what we needed. The guests were impressed and I will definitely be using K&F Catering again! (Oh and the price was very reasonable and in line with market rates for his services!)

Nola and her staff did such a fantastic job catering our wedding. From helping us plan to menu, providing a delicious tasting, answering questions about logistics and dietary restrictions, and providing stellar food and customer service to the day of the wedding, Nola and her team went above and beyond to make our day special. Our main entrée was fig balsamic glazed wild BBQ salmon with mango kiwi salsa. I wish I could make something this delicious myself, because it was amazing. Our salad consisted of organic mixed greens with julienned apple, shaved fennel, herbed crouton, and a really light but creamy bleu cheese dressing. They even made a separate salad with a different dressing for our dairy-free guests. The guest (and groom’s) favorite was our side: Beecher’s mac and cheese. So good! It was very stormy the day of our wedding, and a lot of things went wrong for us. Nola and her team went beyond the call of duty and helped out where they shouldn’t have needed to. They kept an incredibly positive attitude the entire time, conversed with guests, and helped reassure an incredibly stressed-out bride. The only complaint I heard from any guests was the portion-control at the buffet, but with a buffet we personally feel that was probably necessary. I had been concerned that people would take more than their fair share and leave guests at the end of the line with no food, and I’m sure that was the whole reason for starting out with smaller portions. I also heard that guests were invited to come back for seconds once everybody had been served, so I’m sure everyone got enough food. Overall, we were more than satisfied with Nola, her team, and the food. The food was everything we had hoped for, and the service was outstanding. We recommend them to anybody planning a wedding or other event.

They provided food and drink services at my wedding, including alcohol. The food was top quality and delicious; fruit was very fresh. Although it was only a buffet, they had a server there that was walking around, mingling with guests and making sure everyone was happy. Although they didn't provide everything, like linens, plates, etc., they did give out recommendations (who we ended up using for some things). Communication was a little spotty, but I blame mostly myself for that. We communicated primarily through emails, sometimes my husband would respond, sometimes I did, so that got a little confusing, but I always did receive a response. I'm doubtful that we could've found someone with better prices.

Chef Emme Catering Co. catered a beautiful office Thanksgiving lunch for us in Downtown Seattle. It was very quick and easy to book the services and finalize a menu and required services. They were on time and efficient setting up. Most importantly, the food was the best catered food we've all tasted! We will be using Chef Emme again for our catering needs and recommend their services to anyone wanting quality service and food.

We were very happy with Catering by Tara Helm. It was a fantastic experience. The food was excellent, the service extremely friendly and professional, the cleanup impeccable, and the wedding reception went off without a hitch. Tara was very accommodating and flexible and helped make our day very special. The buffet line decorations she made fit our theme exactly. Tara was very easy to work with and had great ideas during the planning of this event. I won’t consider using anyone else for my future catering needs. Thank you so much!!

My granddaughter was married in May and KISS Catering did a fabulous job! The lasagna was to die for and the herb roasted chicken was tasty and moist. Tami and Keith are very professional and kept this grandma very calm as we walked through the wedding process. They should advertise as wedding consultants as well as catering. We had a tasting early on in the process. I had to laugh as my new grandson asked the day before the wedding if he should provide his own take-out containers - as he remembered hearing there would be a plate for he and his bride to enjoy after the wedding. KISS catering took care of everything. Again, very professional, knowledgeable and wonderful food!

Joy catered our wedding on Whidbey Island, WA on 08/02/2014 and she did a fantastic job!! She came to our house to do the private tasting bringing all of the dishes with her and left us with the leftovers! Everyone at the wedding loved the food. We got the buffet service and it worked great! They were timely, professional, and they went out of their way to set up and take down without being in the way. Great service all around!

Sanja reached out to me within an hour of my request for caterers. She sent me a full proposal with menu items, cost break out, and everything I could possibly need. She worked with me for hours on end, revising the proposal 4 times to meet my needs. She was patient, kind, flexible, and so helpful! She has stayed in constant contact with me, answering every question within minutes. Although they were over my budget, because of their diverse menu, and especially her customer service, I recommended to my Market Manager that we spend the extra money. I'm so excited to entertain our clients next week and I know I won't be disappointed!

I absolutely adore Chef Dayo! She is so sweet and kind and was very accommodating with all of our questions and menu changes for our wedding catering. And her food is delicious! We didn't want to do standard wedding fare, and her southern/Caribbean food really hit the mark. The jerked tofu/chicken were fantastic, and the fried okra is to die for. I really wish she had a restaurant so that I could eat her food more often:) The only thing is that I wish her staff had made sure the groom and I had enough to eat before putting the food away and moving to the dessert course, but besides that everything was perfect and I would highly recommend her to others.

Christine at Urban Pantry provided catering for my son and daughter-in-law's wedding reception November 2017 and everything was absolutely amazing! The food was creative and delicious! Christine met with the bride and myself and created a custom menu that was perfect for the vision my daughter in law had for her special day! It was at a very reasonable cost , everyone who catered the event was very professional and it was an overall great experience. Thank you Christine and Urban Pantry!!! When it came to food for our wedding, that was the part my husband wanted to choose. He is a chef, so it really meant a lot to him that our menu was phenomenal. After venue searching at resorts, we became discouraged with their preset menus with typical wedding food. We then decided to go with a venue where we could hire a caterer. Once the venue manager found out my husband's occupation, she immediately referred us to Twist Catering, stating they were for "foodies." We live here locally, so we were able to visit them for a tasting. It was out of this world. Chef Joel prepared everything for us, as discussed each menu item with us. We met with him numerous times, he helped me with the set up of everything, suggestions, he was there every step of the way for us during the wedding planning process. He even stopped by at the wedding to check on us. And the final menu chosen for the wedding was insane. I'm at the age where a lot of my friends are getting married, as well as attending weddings & all of the guests commented on how exceptional the food was. My husband & I have both worked in restaurants for many years, and know good service can be difficult to find. The food was delivered promptly, and the servers & bartenders were on point. They constantly checked on myself, as well as my husband & his family to keep our drinks full. Between the food, the exceptional service, & the kind treatment we received, it was truly memorable.

Professional, friendly people with great food to boot!! I utilized O'Sheas Catering and Events for an annual event that I host to honor mothers who have lost children to youth violence. The sheer nature of this event is sensitive and has no room for mistakes and the folks at O'Sheas gave me one less thing to worry about. From the pre-event tasting to the actual clean up after the event, they were always responsive to my needs, answered emails and phone calls in a timely fashion and were prompt the day of the show. The event's guests were especially pleased with the BBQ brisket and their feedback made me happy that I chose that as one of our dinner options. Many thanks to O'Sheas, I will definitely be considering this business for my events in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
