I loved the ambiance when I stepped into Peralta's therapy room! It was was clean and peaceful, but not plain. It still had fun artsy design. The facilitating work went very good. I think she challenged me to get to the bottom of the issue and also to explore different ways of looking at it!

When I first started working with Spencer, I had reservations about therapy due to previous experiences which I found to be... less than helpful. Over the course of around a year, Spencer helped me to develop techniques that would allow me to redirect my mind from the things that were causing me a great deal of depression and anxiety. This man has literally seen me at my worst and best, and aimed to provide me with support for either extreme. Some of the most challenging times of my life we're discussed with Spencer, and he was always open and non-judgmental. This is not to say, however, that Spencer is a "yes-man" therapist, and he frequently encouraged me to look at both sides of an interaction where I was struggling to see all points of view included. Long story short, if you want an understanding and compassionate therapist who will also help you challenge yourself to overcome the issues you're struggling with, Spencer is an excellent choice.

My overall experiences with Amanda has been phenomenal. I’ve seen so many therapists in my life and I’ve never felt the level of comfort or convenience as I have with her. The comfort of receiving talk therapy in the privacy of my own home helps me open up more significantly, removes the anxiety of travel/office visits, and has created the kind of rapport I often avoided with other professionals. Additionally, the flexibility means I can still make my appointments if I’m traveling, not at home, or outside my home city, which removes a huge barrier to care as someone who is often quite transient! The level of treatment is on par with any other therapist I’ve seen, if not higher, and the continuum of care and continuity of care has definitely helped my progress - there’s no excuse for cancelling appointments when it’s so easy, which has contributed significantly to my ability to effectively handle issues. By the end of my first session with Amanda, I knew I had done the right thing by reaching out to talk to someone. I had been suffering from severe anxiety and extensive over-worrying from everything from whether the trash was taken out to if it’s possible that my marketing clients could fire me all at the same time. As my therapist and I have continued to work together, I have not only changed most of my thought patterns that lead to unnecessary anxiety and worry, but have also continued on the path toward total self-acceptance, something I know wouldn’t be possible without the help from Amanda.

Although I have never been Ms. Anthony's client, I have known her since 20ll and I have watched her skills, credentials, and experience grow exponentially. Her education is excellent and her participation in activities related to her dedicated drive to become a well rounded and knowledgeable therapist who can serve clientele grounded in her volunteer efforts for those in need. She has immersed herself in serving and fighting for a very diverse population of those in need of help. While I receive ongoing therapy from the Department of Veterans Affairs, I would happily and trustfully put my care in Ms. Anthony's capable and outstanding care. I cannot speak too highly of Ms. Anthony. Sincerely, Dwight D Allbee

I provide an opportunity for you to find options for your life that may not otherwise be apparent. I enjoy finding ways to help my clients realize their desires through the exploration of their life.

I have advanced psychotherapeutic training in sexuality and intimacy, which means I am able to address issues of sexuality (including affairs, varying relationship structures, orgasm difficulties, pelvic pain, premature and delayed ejaculation, erectile difficulties, discomfort with one's body, past sexual trauma, detaching/dissociating, numbing in order to engage sexually, lack of desire) with openness, honesty, compassion, and directness with the couples and individuals with whom I am privileged to work. I help couples increase their emotional connection, openness, sexual desire, and sexual fulfillment with one another - even if sexuality has long been avoided, has been a place of tension, is completely non-existent, or if an affair has occurred. I believe in the AMAZING CAPACITY of people to grow, challenge themselves, and step into their bodies, beings, and life with greater integrity, hope, and honesty. I believe that cultivating intimacy (letting yourself be seen) is the road to more fulfilling, engaging, delightful, and passionate embodiment and sex (which is much, much broader than penile-vaginal intercourse). I help my clients be open about what is really going on - so that they can, with integrity, shape the course of their lives.

I am a psychotherapist, providing strengths-based counseling and psychotherapy to adults, teens, and couples. As a professional therapist, I provide you with a safe and supportive place to gain perspective on issues in your life, and then work to make lasting changes. I believe you already have the strengths and qualities you need to heal, grow, and reach your highest potential. We work together in counseling to work through patterns and blocks that may be keeping you stuck, so you can expand and grow in new ways. I am a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) in the State of Washington.

Are you looking for an effective alternative to traditional therapy? I have more than 20 years of experience as a counselor and psychotherapist and have additional training in EMDR, psychosynthesis (transpersonal psychology), NLP and hypnosis. Moreover, I am a Reiki master who is also trained in Sound Therapy and other energy modalities. I have found energy work to be highly effective as an adjunct to psychotherapy. Each person is unique, and I have realized that different modalities can help patients heal more quickly on a deeper level. Working with you, I draw upon my experience, education and my own spiritual and contemplative practices to help you clear away blocks from the past and discover and live from your true self. I offer talk therapy and energy work either individually or combined. I accept Insurance for psychotherapy and am a preferred provider for Premera, Regence and First Choice and can accept other insurances with out of network coverage. Finding the right therapist is important, so I would be pleased to discuss matters with you to help find out if I would be a good fit. Best wishes on your journey.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
