David is probably one of the nicest and genuine people we've had the pleasure of working with since moving to the PNW. My wife and I live in a industrial loft space that some would describe as challenging if they weren't trained or had an eye for design. There's limited storage spaces (two closets), low amounts of provided lighting (4 light fixtures for 1100 sq ft two-floors), and has lots of cement (i.e.- walls, floors, etc). This was challenging for my wife and I, because our home prior to moving to Seattle was setup in a traditional modern deco fashion and had many features already installed and built in. David took our space-- and over the course of 5 months-- made our space feel warm, practical, and inviting while still maintaining the industrial look that I was seeking. He added color and lighting to key areas within the space that made the space feel welcoming and bigger. He also changed our upstairs loft area to make it feel as though we have several rooms within the one space. I have recommended his work to several of my co-workers since working with him. I would hire him again for my interior design needs. Thanks again, David!

We were so lucky to have found Tristan on extremely short notice to stage our home before we listed it for sale. She responded promptly to all my emails, was very flexible with what we wanted done and was able to provide us with the services we needed for the budget we had. Most importantly, Tristan had a wonderful eye for furniture placement and practical decorating sense for staging purposes. We wanted to use our own furniture and belongings with only minimal supplementing of staging furniture/accessories (which she is able to provide). She came over and walked us through every room of our house and helped us place and decorate down to the very last detail. She was fun and easy to work with and made the whole process very enjoyable. Needless to say, our house sold less than a week later and we heard that there were multiple groups that asked who our stager was during the Open House. I am looking forward to using her again, this time for her interior design skills in our next home!

Cecily did an amazing job staging our house for sale! We had couple of unfurnished rooms and they were staged beautifully to match the rest of the house. The cold and uninviting formal living was instantly turned into glamorous sophisticated space that I couldn't stop admiring. We got an offer after 2 days on the market!

Don't wait to contact Heather - I had a small project that was difficult for my husband and I to figure out and she made it so EASY! We love her - she is fun to work with and has really good ideas. This is the first time I've used an Interior Designer and I don't know why I waited this long. It's made a world of difference and our project is just getting underway. Heather designed a new fireplace for us with window seating on both sides and even put us in touch with a great contractor to do the work. Everyone she has sent me to has been prompt and helpful. We will be sure to use her in the future for other projects. Thanks Heather!

Rosie installed a handmade painted grasscloth wallpaper in my powder room. She did a great job it was a very fussy kind of wallpaper which neither of us realized till we got started. She took her time to line everything up and was very conscientious thru the entire job. I'm grateful that she have the patience to see it through. She was great to work with.

I hired Plume Staging for a house in Shoreline that my company put on the market this week. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Amy, she was very accommodating and friendly. She even agreed to work the day after Thanksgiving, which says a lot about their service! Most of the other staging companies I had spoken to said it would take them 3-4 days to stage but Amy did it in a day. Also, her design aesthetic is spot on, she used the right colors to make the house really pop. She even gave me good suggestions on interior paint colors that I can use on my future remodels. Looking forward to working with them again!

Interior design is not my strength and I was lost. Fortunately, I found Alison on Thumbtack. She walked me through the process, did what I asked her to do (including pushing me out of my comfort zone) and changed my new construction empty house into my home. I would highlight her fee structure which removed the conflicts of interest that plague this industry, and her practicality in finding more expensive furnishings where it made sense and some spectacular work on a budget where it didn't make sense to spend a lot. Thanks A!

Keith Miller of Miller Interior Design is one of the best designers/ interior decorators I have ever worked with. He really listens to his clients to determine their style and does an amazing job without ego getting in the way like so many designers. He really has a vision on what will work and understands how to deliver modern, traditional and everything in between. He will work within your budget and deliver an amazing product and result. Fabulous talented interior decorator who I have used for my home projects and who I will use in the future. Really an incredibly talented designer and a delightful person to boot.

My wife and I worked with Fernanda on remodeling our large family room. She helped us pick out the right colors, furniture and finishes. She even came up with an amazing design plan to add a wall that allowed us to turn unused space into a mud room and make our tiny bathroom bigger. All while staying on budget!!! I can see why Fernanda was recommended to us by a friend. She is the best of the best when it comes to interior design and is extremely talented. She was very easy to talk to and listened to our wants and concerns. She was worth every dollar (which was my main concern). I tend to be skeptical when it comes to this line of work, assuming that the designer will go for the top priced items. That was not the case at all! My wife was nervous about hiring an interior designer at first, worried that someone was going to dictate a style to her or present a bunch of options that she didn't want. Fernanda was excellent. My wife felt that she really understood her unique style. Fernanda presented piece after piece, option after option until my wife thought everything was just right. When the room was all done and put together, my wife's comment was, "I'm so happy she found this [coffee table / console / couch / curtains / etc]. This was exactly what I wanted." Working with Fernanda was a great experience and pleasure for us. We will be calling her again to help us update our kitchen.

We hired Mandy to make some improvements to our outdated kitchen. She came up with a design and materials that updated the feel without losing the charm. My wife is very indecisive and impatient. Mandy handled my her with grace, humor, and respect; she straightened out a flaky contractor with tact; and she got creative when things didn't go according to plan. She finished on schedule and under-budget. We will definitely bring her back when we decide on next project if she is still willing to make the 1+ hour drive.

Ms. Strobel has excellent taste. Her many years of expertise in art and design make her the perfect candidate for creative design projects for any environment - from production staging, business staging and of course home design, she is the best. I've had the pleasure of working with her for years and she always brings out the very best in whatever space she is styling. With an nod toward your personal style and a touch of modernity, she is miles ahead of the average stylist design curve. Additionally, she is an absolute pleasure to work with. I can't say enough good things about her. Highly recommended!

I hired Nabila to help me and my husband figure out what's the best way to furnish our big empty living room. We loved working with her so much, we are now considering her to help us design our next project to remodel the kitchen. Nabila is easy to talk to, she listens to us, and she adapts to the way we live and what we need and want. She was working so fast and hard to finish the design and after that to go with me for all the shopping we need to finish this project. She is affordable and professional. I highly recommend La Vanesse Design & Staging for interior design.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
