Jarrod worked on adjusting the loose hinge in our bathroom glass door and he installed a new glass panel for another bathroom. His work was pretty solid. Jarrod was very good and thorough in his follow-ups from the beginning to the end. He kept his time and his estimates were very close to the final amount. I would strongly recommend him. (In fact I have already given his contact to my friend who wanted some help.)

I have hired them to clean up my newly purchased house, which was on a market for over a year and had seen many visits over that period of time during all of the Realtor showings. Because of the flow of people that went through the house and because it was not occupied for so long, house was horribly dirty. Alex's cleaning did outstanding job cleaning the house, not just wiping dust, but completely spotless, so my family could move in the same day!!! They went above and beyond to get that house in spotless condition (windows, blinds, kitchen cabinets, countertops, bathrooms, bathroom cabinets) on every aspect of it. If you want good, trustworthy, honest, and hard working crew - hire them!

Sergioh installed a window in our barn. He did a great job so I also had him install railing on a balcony, and put up some beams. We were very happy with all three jobs. He showed up on time, was communicative, and worked fast. I also appreciate the fact that he didn't want to cut corners, he does things the right way. That, and his pricing was fair. He was also clear about what he could and couldn't do when we discussed other potential projects (I appreciate that very much). I'll definitely hire him again.

Dan and his team did a great job painting our house exterior, doors, and trim as well as replacing some fascia. The completed the job quickly and neighbors have commented how good it looks and how careful the team was in prepping the house. To ensure the job was to my satisfaction, both Dan and his lead painter each walked the job with me separately to catch any issues. There was one tiny cleanup issue we found afterwards that Dan immediately volunteered to correct. I would trust them with another job any time.

He helped me finish a project that had been left incomplete by a previous handyman. The project involved ripping out bad drywall work and re-doing it. I look forward to having him come back to finish the exterior work around the new window.

Steve Dahlin has worked for and alongside my spouse and I for more than ten years in many facets of restoration and renovation of our historic property, such as carpentry, siding installation, painting, repairing and restoring historic floors and thresholds, windows, and exterior and interior historic moldings. The projects we've worked on together have focused on jobs both small and large on the renovation of our two-hundred-year-old historic house and barn. Steve has brought his expertise and long experience to solving the often sticky problems that emerge when restoring, preserving, renovating, and replicating historic features. One project particularly stands out: We had found an original, historic window in terrible disrepair and deterioration that we wanted to restore and put back into its original location. Every other contractor, window supplier, etc., that we spoke to told us that the window was beyond repair and that we should discard it and purchase a new one. Steve, however, took on the job and did a fabulous job of restoring the window to not only its former beauty but also its functionality. Steve impresses us with his willingness to come out and help us even when the jobs are very small. Steve has recently worked with us on repairing our historic barn, and we've been very pleased with the result.

Professional, friendly, and affordable are the reasons why I’d recommend Good Guy Windows. Earlier this year they replaced a few windows in my home. Their courteous neighborly consultation was such a sharp contrast to their competitors (those ‘big guy’ window companies that cost at least two or three times more!) that it was an obvious and easy decision to choose Good Guy Windows. More recently they replaced ALL remaining windows in my home in less than 2 days. Through the entire process they were prompt, responsive, and friendly. Trusting Good Guy Windows with my home window replacement project was one of the best home improvement decisions I’ve made.

This was one of the best companies I have ever worked with, they are a great family owned business that takes pride in the work they do. We had a bad seal in one of the windows and one wouldn't even open they came out and gave me a bid on glass and WOW even fixed the window that wouldn't open for no charge. We okay them to do the work, they ordered the glass and the boys were here on Friday morning to replace it. What a great job guys. Yes, I would use them again. Thanks for the great service.

I had a home built in ’56 with a large 9’ x 5.5’ front window that needed replacing. I attempted to get quotes from a couple of long established window companies and either got the runaround, or didn’t get a call back with a quote. In a Google search, I found R & L Windows. Randy answered my call on my first attempt, he met me that evening after work to provide me a bid, and two week later installed the window. R & L’s serves was outstanding, his employees were courteous and fast at the installation. I’ve had many windows installed in my houses over the years, I can’t say enough good things about the work and I couldn’t be happier with the final product.

Roofs are key, especially in this environment. R&R did a great job and took care of little things that weren't necessary but made the finished product better. It was a great experience and I would recommend this business to anyone wanting a metal roof.

Josh arrived on time, was well-groomed, had a great disposition, and got right to work. He carefully prepped the area and was very deft at putting the new window in. It was obvious that he knew what he was doing. He cleaned up the area well, making sure to vacuum away the tiny bits of shattered glass left over and polishing the lovely new window. I would hire him again in an instant!

First off, I can't say enough about Evergreen's quote process. They were the only company I got a quote from the didn't start with a ridiculous, much higher price then drop it down after "talking to their manager". Even better than not attempting to gouge me, Evergreen only took 25-30 minutes max to finish the entire quote. I had one window company stay for two hours, two hours, really. I would recommend these guys to anybody. I could totally tell they care about their customer satisfaction throughout the entire process. These guys did a great job, very professional on time got the job finished on time and it looked great. You could tell Tim really puts a lot of effort and focus into perfecting the end result. I would recommend these guys to anybody. GO EVERGREEN!

Ken and the guys from Clear Choice were fantastic. They redid windows in our entire house and they were fast, professional, and did a great job. We were worried because our basement windows had their frames rotten away, but the guys did a great job rebuilding he frame and didn't charge anything extra. I would highly recommend working with them if you are considering installing windows. They are very friendly and easy to work with. They were very clear and thorough with questions and got the job done quickly. We would hire them again for sure

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
