The head trainer Peter and I used to be coworkers. At the end of almost every day, we would clean up the rooms we worked in. This gave us a lot of time to talk about work, school, and life in general. During these talks I would complain a lot about the people in my life who made me feel awful and being unappreciated at our work. He saw right through my complaints and pushed me to confront my deeper issues of self-esteem and doubt. My tendency has always been to react very viscerally to negative things in my life, chalking it up to being an emotional person. I would dwell in my sadness in a way that in the past had led me through an eating disorder, and even after would lead to feelings of emotional exhaustion and depression. His advice always lead me to confront my feelings about negative situations and helped me think about the power I have to change the way I react to negativity and life in general. Peter began to encourage me to practice being mindful of my feelings and the triggers around me through meditation. Here are two BIG lessons that Peter helped me understand. #1: He helped me realize that negativity or “suffering”as the Buddhists refer to it, is part of life. Before I met Peter, I would obsess over why I suffered through bad things, always trying to put the blame on others or often putting the blame on myself. But Peter helped me change my mindset. I now am continually trying to be mindful of negativity and focus my energy on how to move through it. This has improved my performance at work, helping me become less of an inactive complainer and more of an active problem solver. It also continually helps me in my personal life, keeping me from dwelling too much in disappointment or sadness. #2: The second thing I learned from Peter is that meditation and mindfulness are practiced. They are not always going to be easy. Every meditation is not going to be peaceful and each sit down is different. But each one is impactful and offers moments of clarity. Though honestly, I have not committed myself to a daily practice of meditation, Peter has helped me begin a practice of mindfulness that is continually helping me grow. As I continue to practice I find those moments of peace and contentment. Mediation and mindfulness is a path that I am still carving out for myself but Peter gave me the tools to begin and continue my journey. Thank you Peter for helping me find this path!

Laura taught me English for several weeks. I received excellent corrections on pronounciation and grammar. The fun about learning at Laura's has been one-to-one Skype sessions, direct feedback, socially oriented outline of topics, flexible approach. I chose for personal lessons and learning in a group would do the job as well!

On behalf of the Cell Life Church Council, I wanted to take a moment to say how much we appreciated the two day workshop Amy deVries led for our church leadership team. We have implemented many of the things we learned from her and have seen a marked difference in our team’s interactions and effectiveness. She very adeptly lead us through difficult discussion topics that allowed us to not only understand each other but also how to communicate better with each other and achieve common goals more quickly and with more success. I would not hesitate to recommend her seminar to any team looking to improve their team skills. I also have no hesitation in recommending her coaching services to individuals. Amy's insight is obviously Holy Spirit led.

I worked closely with Kevin for over four years, and during that time, his support and leadership were the benchmark of how other departments were measured. Kevin and his team consistently supported the development plans/training plans of over 2600 individuals. He designed development plans for the Senior Leadership team and their direct reports ensuring that they addressed/developed "blind spots" in their skills to accelerate performance and to execute more cohesively as a team. Kevin was also responsible for designing/developing/executing our National Sales Summit managing everything from the agenda to the theme to the P&L. Kevin is one of the best executives coaches that I have had the opportunity to work with and that I highly recommend if your company is in need of a turnaround or just needs to take its performance to the next level

Suzanne is a one of a kind yoga teacher that delves deeply into the meaning of what she teaches and believes in. She always has the time and compassion to work with those that desire to understand how yoga can improve their lives. I was a student of hers in Maine for about 4 years. We were all so sorry to lose her to Seattle!!

Sheri served as the project manager for the implementation of an electronic physician documentation system at the healthcare facility where I am employed. From the very start of the project it was clear to me that Sheri is passionate about what she does, and truly cares about the success of the people and the project. A few words that would define Sheri's style: respectful, diligent, all-inclusive, non-judgmental, encouraging and motivational. Her gently persuasive style accompanied by a wonderful sense of humor made her the most effective project manager and coach that I've ever worked with in the 36 years that I've been in a leadership role. I would challenge you to find a person more inspiring and caring person to lead your charge!

This was my first experience using a CPC, I was apprehensive at first, but adjusted to it. Juanita makes the sessions comfortable and enlightening. I gained confidence with each session in expressing my feelings and thoughts. This was a really enjoyable experience. Being unemployed at the time, the sessions helped relieve the stress and the rejections that come from job hunting. A great experience and life lesson!!

I can read bodies and alignments. I allow students to make adjustments at their own pace through verbal lead so they can actually recreate that experience and correct their alignments in the future. I understand the pitfalls of yoga and incorrect breath/posture instruction and can safely guide students into a progressive practice. I am not an airy-fairy yoga instructor. I have been a wilderness guide, mother and business woman. I know how to address the stress of modern life with yoga.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

        • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
        • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
        • Defining your career goals
        • Creating a plan for job searching
        • Improving networking strategies and skills
        • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
        • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
        • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

        Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

        • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
        • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
        • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
        • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
        • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
        • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
        • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

        What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
