Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

Consult with a top tile contractor near you and get free estimates on how much installing tile will cost you.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I hired Andrey for both tile installation as well as installing hardwood floors. He did a great job on both. He was flexible and didn't panic when something wasn't ready. He just re-scheduled. We remodel many apartment units and I plan on using Andrey for all my tile and wood floor installations.

We loved working with Diamond Tile to replace the existing tile behind our fireplace. We especially appreciated the in person quote (as opposed to ebid), the professionalism and craftsmanship. Charles went above and beyond with my vision and totally exceeded my expectations. This was a super ambitious project and each tile had to be laid by hand to achieve the look I wanted. He explained every step of the way and was all around a super friendly guy. Coordinating with Brian was great too! I would absolutely work with them in the future and would highly recommend Diamond to anyone looking for tile installation.

Vitali did such an amazing job, and worked so quickly! How does he do it?? Very courteous and well done, we are so pleased with his work. Outdoor patio installation, with 8x8 patterned tiles.

We were very impressed with Diamond Tile. They were very reasonable priced, and completed the project on time. The tile we chose for our backsplash was triangular glass with an internal bevel which made for a tricky installation. Alex was very thoughtful with the layout and made meticulous cuts that finished the project beautifully. The end result was absolutely gorgeous and we will be using them again for our next project.

We hired Tugsuu to install some gorgeous herringbone ceramic tile in our kitchen. He and his son worked through the weekend to finish the project and he returned in a timely manor two days later to lay the grout. Super impressed with his work and we’ll definitely have him back out when we’re ready to tile the new master bathroom. Thanks, Tugsuu!

Floorcraft did a good and conscientious job, and was very good about communications. Fast and efficient. Minor beefs: (i) did not buy a selection of special tiles to add some variety as requested but bought and installed a uniform tile, (ii) damaged front walk steps in removing the old tub, and (iii) left glass splinters from shower door on shower floor and didn't warn us.

We had a great experience with Diamond Tile! I was a little nervous to have tile work done during Covid, but it went smoothly and I'm so glad we did it. We hired them to demo and install new bathroom tile, and we love how it turned out. Brian, the owner, was professional, responsive to our questions and changes, sent us a detailed quote and invoice, and he came to check in on the job throughout the short project. I appreciated that he always wore a mask, and that he was easy to communicate with. The tiler who did the work, Ryan, did a nice job with the tile, and also wore a mask. I'd hire them again, and would highly recommend them!

Brian is very responsive. Had measurement and initial discussion done quickly after reaching out on Thumbtack. Alex did a good job on the tile installation and provided a lot design suggestions. The new backsplash matches pretty well with the old ones in the kitchen :)

We hired VA CONSTRUCTION to re-tile our tiny bathroom and install a new toilet. Their communication was great from the start and they got the work done fast and with minimal disruption on our end while we worked from home. We would definitely hire them for other projects!

I hired Oleg to install a tile backsplash and he did a great job overall. There are a few details where things didn't come out as expected (like air bubbles in grout that popped and now need filled in), but overall the quality was very good. Oleg was courteous, clean and got everything done in one day!

I highly recommend Mr. Tile. They did a beautiful job with my shower tile, fitting me in within a week of having all materials, and working to finish the project quickly (as they knew I only had one bathroom). They were prompt in their communication throughout the process. During the install, we discovered that the fixture I purchased did not fit my valve system. They tried everything they could to make it work, even going to the hardware store to find another product that did work. In the end though, I decided to keep my original fixtures. I paid them the estimated amount, only to get a call from Mr. Tile a few hours later saying they wanted to refund me the amount to replace the fixtures. Even though they worked extra time to try and make it work and it was my fault the fixture didn't fit in the first place. The Mr. Tile team is kind, professional, communicative, and honest. The prices are very competitive. What more could you ask for!

Cedo was great to work with and did an excellent job tiling floors, building / tiling a custom shower and adding old bricks masonry onto an interior wall. He is extremely professional and goes to great lengths to make sure the work is as perfect as possible given the construction site conditions. My remodel turned out to be challenging because of the walls not being straight and the brick wall being very time consuming, but he was very gracious about any unforeseen obstacles and worked extremely hard to get the project finished. He was a very valuable thought partner each step of the way, and I ended up extending the original scope to include installing a backsplash, doors and trim. The end result looks spectacular and i would hire him again in a heartbeat!

The tile installation was subpar. They lost their level, there are uneven spacing gaps between the tiles, and some really ugly areas that need to be redone. But it was a complicated tile pattern and Bruno is a nice guy. Excelencia was the most affordable option so I got what I paid for. But what was unacceptable was their disregard for our house and cabinets. When they left they left mortar and grout splattered all over our kitchen floor and our brand new custom walnut cabinets. I asked repeatedly if it was okay and Bruno reassured me that it comes out. He was supposed to come back and clean it all up. He did come back and brought some cleaning supplies, I left for breakfast, and when I got back he was gone, didn’t clean but left me the supplies. He had another client emergency and said he wasn’t able to come back to clean up his mess. I had to spend half a workday helping him cut the tile to get him to finish on day 3 of a 1 day project, I had to spend 2 hours finishing the grout that he didn’t complete, and then my wife and I spent our entire Sunday trying to clean the mortar off of the floor and cabinets. Scrubbing the mortar off of the floor ending up scuffing and sanding the new hardwoods. He’s a nice guy, but if he had just put down drop clothes and protected our floors and cabinets I wouldn’t feel compelled to write a bad review. If you care about an eye for detail and craftsmanship, this crew is not for you.
