Chelsea did an amazing job with my wedding hair and makeup, Her assistant did my hair and I couldn't be happier! I would recommend her to anyone looking for a hair and makeup artist. Her rates are also very reasonable, especially for all that's included. I would definitely hire her again when I'm in need of hair and makeup services

Cristy was absolutely amazing! She did my hair and make up for my wedding, and it was just gorgeous! I kept looking in the mirror because I was just so shocked at the beautiful reflection. My wedding day was in August with a temp of 95 degrees. Cristy set my makeup perfectly, as it did not sweat off at all. My makeup was on point all day long. My hair was also locked in very well and did not budge. Cristy was wonderful to work with. She was very sweet and very responsive. I must have changed my mind on plans about 5 times, but she was very accommodating. I would 100% recommend her!

Tara was recommended to me by my stylist for wedding makeup. From my first interaction with her, she was warm, friendly and professional. She was very responsive and helpful. Tara did a great job of listening to what I wanted and developing a look that worked well for me through our trial. On the big day she did a fantastic job on my look as well as my bridesmaids and mother. I loved the way I looked in the moment and in the photos after. I was also delighted by how well my makeup wore. Even in the last photos of the night, it still looked great. Tara has great energy, she inspires confidence and is fun to be around!

Jamie did makeup and hair for my wedding! She was lovely and kind, patient and friendly. I don't wear much makeup regularly, so I wanted a bright and natural look. She listened to all of my concerns and did a wonderful job. She also makes her own makeup line, which was very good on my skin. I fell asleep without washing my face and there were no breakouts! Even in the 95 degree heat and an outdoor wedding, her hair and makeup held up wonderfully :) If you want a great listener and professional artist, Jamie is the one.

I had my hair and makeup done by Julie for a wedding that I was a part of. I could not have been happier with the final result. She really listened to me and by doing so, was able to achieve the look i was going for! She far exceeded my expectations! She’s very professional and has an extremely likeable personality. No “awkward silence” feeling with her! :D

I had initially done a trial with Claire in which I wanted very natural looking makeup, then I went home and took pictures and decided I wanted to slightly glam that version up and Claire was fine with the last minute change. Additionally, my mother in law also decided that she would like her makeup done and Claire was able to add her as well, which was really nice. Also, she was able to recommend a product for me that seems really great. She was nice to work with and on a strange side note- her makeup smelled great. LOL.

I had a photoshoot with a friend of mine whose a photographer, and Erika did my makeup. She brought out my "natural" beauty without making me look over done. I felt confident and the make up was flawless. I didn't want to take it off at the end of the day!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Need a Personal Makeup Artist

Portland, OR

I am interested in hiring a very experienced makeup artist for a personal makeup consult. I am nearing 40 and my skin is not in great shape despite a healthy lifestyle and getting laser work done on my face in the past. The consequences of Lymes disease unfortunately and many years of acne and hormonal pigmentation. For the last few years I have been using the original Lancome Teint Idole as my foundation and would follow up with a kabuki brush dabbed into some Paul & Joe Dual Compact Powder Foundation pressed into my face verses brushed on. This would give a very well covered and very matt powder finish that would fill in large pores, pore irregularity, acne scars, etc. It also covers pigmentation. I am so tired of having such a powdery looking face and although it does fill in texture irregularity, it also has an aging appearance because of the powdery mattness of the finish. I would love to find the right application/products to be able to get a smooth finish (helping textural irregularity) and covering blemishes/pigmentation/redness with a combination of primer and airbrush/liquid or cream foundation and maybe just a little powder. It would be nice to look a little more natural and luminous. (Have always wanted to have that nice sheen on my cheeks). Because I am prone to breakout, I have been looking into: Occ Cosmetics, Kett Cosmetics, Grafttobian and Dinair both for airbrush makeup and for possible cream makeup. I like these because they are water based. Figured I could even check out a water based primer instead of the more common silicone primers I have used in the past. I used Temptu S/B airbrush in the past (been a few years ago) and don’t remember being very happy with the results. I returned the product. Would basically like to come in, get color matched to Occ or any other products you might recommend and get some product (brand)/application/technique coaching/training. It would also be nice to learn how to contour and highlight as well. I have a long and full face with cheeks, so contour/highlight would help define some cheekbones, etc. Also learning how to make my eyes look bigger and more open would be great. Please contact me at convenience. My schedule is pretty flexible and hopefully we can set up a date. I could either show up with how I normally do my makeup so someone can see it and could remove and redo it or I could come in with no (or most likely very little makeup).
