What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

Janet is extremely professional and warm. Voice lessons can be very personal, and Janet achieves the balance between guidance and connecting with you as a person and a musician. I had been singing for about ten years when I worked with her, and was looking to improve on my technique, so finding a voice teacher who could teach adults with experience was imperative to me. I enjoyed my lessons with her and continue to use several of the warm-ups and vocal drills that I learned while working with her.

I've been taking voice lessons from Scott Farrell for 6 months. These 45 minute sessions are challenging yet fun, and they take place in a comfortable private atmosphere. I couldn't sing at all when I began taking lessons from him. Under his expert and caring instruction, I've made steady improvement and progress towards my goals. I would recommend his instruction to all of my family and friends.

I and my two daughters have been taking voice lessons from Roxy for the past four or five months. My daughters started first and I was so impressed with Roxy’s teaching and inspired by my girls that I started lessons too! I love Roxy’s holistic approach to teaching. She not only covers amazing vocal technique but she helps you work through the inevitable nervousness and vulnerability that emerges for new singers. Thank you, Roxy!! 💛

Meaghan is a great teacher. She performs regularly and she brings both academic and real world singing experience to her vocal lessons. She corrected my breathing and my posture and I can definitely tell a big difference in my singing. We worked on voice warm ups first and then she accompanied me on her her piano while I was singing through my song. Her studio space is very safe and comfortable. I feel very lucky to find someone of her quality and at her price range in Seattle. I am definitely setting up weekly lessons with her.

Just started my first lesson today and it was great!. My vocal instructor Megan was phenomenal. I'd love to continue to work with her. She made me feel comfortable right off the bat. I was able to single without feeling nervous and really try to see how far I could go with my voice. The first like 10 minutes I was able to hit high notes warming up with her, notes that I didn't even know I was able to hit. Overall I am really excited to see how much of my voice I can find and improve. Hope to get to work with her for my next session! - MPK
