Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

After the first consultation with Austin, I was left extremely comfortable and excited for what was in store for my first personal training experience. My goal was to get a jump start back into lifting and learn about weight lifting, and that is exactly what Austin provided. Austin is extremely knowledgable with how each exercise/lift would impact the body and the reasons why doing them would be beneficial for fitness goals and overall health. He also made the experience very enjoyable by being a motivating and down to earth guy. I was always nervous about feeling intimated by a personal trainer or the facilities people personal train in, but this was not that at all. Every session included a few laughs and stories along with the sweat. I would highly recommend Austin to anyone at any level of fitness to work with him as you would not regret it!

I have been working with Lisa a little over a month and I have seen some changes in my body. Her program has variety and not the stereotypical workout training of reps and sets but based on time increments . If you tell her your problem areas she will cater to them and provide adjustments and stretches if it gets uncomfortable. If you have had a personal trainer before and you want a change check her out!

When first searching for a personal trainer, I had no idea what type of trainer I was looking for. All I knew was that I wanted someone who would help me to be a better version of myself. Andie reached out to me and gave me a very detailed email of what to expect in her training. Without even meeting her, I already felt comfortable and at ease. When beginning training with Andie, she made everything very clear about where she would like me to be by the end of our training together. She explained how my body worked, and ways to get my body to start functioning better. I have always hated going to the gym, but every day that I train with Andie, I am excited to go and feel so much more confident with myself. She is motivational, educational, inspirational and one of the most sincere people you will ever meet. She is worth every penny, great with communication and knows what it truly takes to be a trainer and serve her clients to the best of her ability.

I've gained some 25 pounds over the past year due to bad eating habits and lack of exercise. Finally I decided to look up a personal trainer online. I received quotes from few personal trainers in my area, but Andie's profile stood up, she sounded very passionate about her job and genuinely interested in her clients. Also, I considered her experience and knowledge as a body builder being a huge plus. I've had already 4 training sessions with her and I'm loving it! She is very sweet, understanding, knowledgeable and motivating. I'm really impressed how dedicated she is, she makes me feel important, created custom meal plan for me and of course, exercise program. Andie always finds time to answer my questions, even encourages me to ask them, despite of her busy schedule. She is a great professional but an awesome good-hearted person as well.

I started working with Andie back in October of 2012. Then I was 40lbs overweight and completely out of shape. I had never been to a personal trainer before, and I can tell you at first I was terrified. However, once I met Andie she totally put me at ease and totally changed my perception on personal trainers. Andie cares about her clients and pushes you to be the best YOU possible. I'm now down 35lbs, almost to my goal weight, and have toned up all over. People I haven't seen in months have been complimenting me and asking how I was able to lose so much weight and tone up, and my answer is always Andie! Without her I'd probably be lost in some mainstream gym with no clue as to what I was doing. Andie provides you with a reasonable meal plan, which will surprisingly become your normal lifestyle, and pushes you to your maximum potential on every visit. She is extremely knowledgeable in weight training and food portioning. Her system allows you to lose the inches and weight in a healthy way so that you're not starving or denying yourself of some guilty pleasures. Not only will you develop new habits, but you'll take care of yourself in a way you never thought possible. I can honestly say that working with Andie has changed my life in more ways than one and all for the better. So, if you're truly looking to change your ways, get in shape and become the best YOU possible then DEFINITELY go to Andie. Trust me, you won't regret it. -Katelyn

I felt comfortable with Austin as soon as I walked in the door, and that’s important when hiring a personal trainer! He’s obviously very well informed without being boastful about it - he helps you understand exercises and work out benefits in ways you’ll understand and be excited about! I’m a 31 year old woman, have had 5 back surgeries and have barely ever worked out (maybe here and there with a YouTube video) but we are both confident I can achieve my fitness goals with his guidance. His facility is perfect for anyone at any level and everyone is very friendly and down to earth. Super excited to continue my work with Austin! 💪🏽

I have always struggled with my weight after having my kids, I have done weight watchers & Atkins, which I lost alittle but then would gain it back. I worked out when I could, but never knew if I was doing the excercises properly. My husband went on this site to view personal trainers for me in the area and Andie was on the top of our list. I e-mailed her as well as one other, and from her information and not feeling pressured to join with her made me at ease right away. The 1st time meeting with her I was nervous of what she would expect of me, but after talking with her I felt so much more at ease and excited to get started! She listened to everything I had issues with and foods I liked and made me a plan that I can deal with (I even get cheat meals to look forward too:) She makes the workouts fun and she keeps you motivated! I have not lost any weight(nor gained) which she explained not to focus so much on, but lost 6 inches so far in the 2 months I've been with her. Although I have a long way to go,I really look forward to the days I workout with her, and I leave there feeling accomplished and slowly better about myself.
