Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Bruce spent a few hours with us and our dog and provided some great tips as well as demonstrated some practical training. Bruce obviously loves dogs which translates to how he trains, believing that calm, confident, and rewarding good behavior leads to a more obedient dog. We would have to agree. We've been applying his training for the past few days and are seeing improvement. Bruce also let us know he was available anytime for follow up questions or advice. We believe that the training continues long after whomever is hired leaves if it is to be successful. Thanks Bruce!

Cheri was amazing with my dog Nugget, she showed up and was able to understand the issue with my dog instantly and started working on a solution. She is very knowledgeable about dogs and I could see the improvements with my dog from our first training session. Thanks Cheri for your help! Looking forward to keep working with you.

Was very disappointed with how the training went. I had hired her to help with my dogs jumping and walking on the leash and felt like I wasn’t really helped. Only thing she did was teach my dog sit. Not worth $80 that we paid for the hour.

I contacted Katelynn to inquire about dog training services. She was very prompt in responding, answered all of my questions & was flexible in scheduling a time that worked for my entire family
Arleen B. replied to my inquiry almost immediately and answered all my questions. She is coming to my home tomorrow to evaluate my dog for training. I was impressed with her promptness. Arleen Berke

I have yet to have K9 Katelynn officially meet my dog but so far she is the first person to actually care about treating my dog on his behavioral needs. I have reached out to many trainers for help and she is the only one to respond and to especially be available to come to our home is a win for us. She responded upon minutes and was ready to be available to help us out.

Bruce was absolutely phenomenal with my boy. Kodiak is a service dog who was attacked when he was young and as a result, he's often nervous around others. As soon as Bruce came over, Kodiak loves him (and I do mean LOVED). Bruce walk d me through everything and made sure to keep a keen eye in Kodiak. Bruce was wonderful overall and really understands dogs, each individual's needs, and what needs to go into the training he uses.

We have a small 14 month old terrier mix whom we have had for about 9 months now and we just adopted an 8 week old lab mix. Our main concern was aggression with our older pup and we didn't want her passing that on to our new pup. Bruce helped us to understand the root of her aggression and to see that it was actually something that could be easily worked on. He didn't come in and try to "fix" our dog like some trainers, but rather helped empower us to help her be the best dog she could be! Bruce also helped us to leash train her because she pulled on the leash a lot when walking. Within minutes, he got her walking better than we could with months of training!! Even though we called about our older dog, Bruce also helped us to get our newest pup accustomed to being on a leash and comfortable with it. He is very knowledgeable and actually listens to concerns without judgement. I would highly recommend Bruce!

There is no way this guy actually has had any education or training for dogs. I think he is a scam artist honestly. My dog has loved EVERY SINGLE person she’s ever met and she is always around people. As soon as this guy came in she would not stop barking at him. The hair on her back stood up and she was terrified of him. He didn’t even try to put his hand out or do anything to make her more comfortable. I tried to hand him one of her toys but he didn’t want to grab it. She has never reacted scared of anyone before. I also got bad and overall creepy vibes from this guy. I am 24 years old and am only staying at my parents for two months and I told the trainer that. Despite this, he literally only looked at and talked to my mother and father. It is my dog and I was the one who hired him? I guess I look too young? Anyways, the initial reason I had hired him was basically because she plays too rough and doesn’t know how to settle down. She tends to jump up on people and play bite and sometimes it hurts! His only suggestion was to spray my dog with a spray bottle/air bottle?? There are hundreds of studies against punishment for dogs and why positive reinforcement works best. He didn’t even show up with any treats. He also was dressed in nice white pants and a button up like he was ready to go out to eat not train a dog? There was no way this guy was going to play with her. He also mixed up my name with my dogs name 8 times within 15 minutes, even after I corrected him several times. When I tried to tell him within the first 20 minutes that he wasn’t a good fit, he proceeded to tell me that it was fine because he doesn’t need to do anything with my dog and he can just teach us. No thanks, I think youtube or google would be better at that. At this point I was very frustrated and left to compose myself. When I can back he was still here and filling up a spray bottle to spray my already terrified dog with. Absolutely not. I’ve never been so uncomfortable and upset! I think this man should be taken off the site immediately. I would also appreciate a refund.

Kim had a personal emergency and could not finish the sessions for my pup Bailey. I was understanding and told her to get back to me whenever she was back on her feet but she never got back to me nor did I get my money back for the incomplete sessions. Side note: I thought she would initially train Bailey for the first half of the session and myself the other half BUT that was not the case. Her training method consists of sitting down and providing verbal instructions to me, not the dog, without actually showing examples.

Bruce was wonderful with our 6 month old Kelpie mix. We had concerns about aggressiveness with strangers primarily men and with walking him. Within 2 minutes of walking through the door our dog Echo was jumping up and licking him not growling or snapping. We sat for an hour went over all of our concerns and he gave us the tools to help Echo become a better member of society if you will. Bruce also went for a walk with us and gave us instructions on how to deal with his pulling, barking at people, lurching for other dogs and animals. It’s only been a couple days but with the techniques he showed us walking Echo is much more enjoyable. We have a lot more training to do on our part and socialization for him but with Bruce’s training session I know we can do this. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

My husband and I really enjoyed talking to Bruce and listening to all his ideas and suggestions. He seemed interested in our German Shepherd and stayed way beyond the one hour session. His price was way below the average dog trainers out there. He listened to everything we had to say, answered all our questions and gave us lots of encouragement. Thank you Bruce, we will definitely let you know how things go with Dingo and Kendrick!!

Kim is absolutely amazing! She started working with our stubborn beautiful Saint Bernard puppy and is honestly a god send! Not only has Kim upheld her contract by teaching everything she listed Buddha would learn but also worked with our other dog to show us how to train the 2 together. She went above and beyond and exceeded all expectations! Thank you Kim for everything we will definitely be scheduling her for the advanced class when we are ready! Sincerely Marissa , Stefan , Buddha and Luna
