Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

Should I tip the garage door repairman?

It’s not expected that you tip garage door repairmen, and normally they’re not expecting a tip for their services. However, it’s always a kind gesture to tip for excellent and friendly service.

Is it dangerous to replace a garage door spring?

Yes, it can be dangerous to undertake a garage door spring repair yourself. Fixing it requires having a working knowledge of how a garage door works and understanding how the parts work. A door can fall on you, and loaded springs can suddenly release and hit you. For this reason, it’s recommended you call a pro to replace or fix your garage door spring.

How often do garage door springs break?

Garage door springs break every three to seven years, depending on its quality and condition. For example, rust and cold weather can shorten the lifespan of a torsion spring.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Prior inspection of a garage door prior to installation of garage door open. Had garage door opener installed and garage door fell off track. Luckily no one was hurt by this . Repair done and door refund for a fee 150.00 plus a 100.00 charge for cables. Door fell off track again and blamed the person that installed my garage door 4 years ago and blamed it on garage door stating poor quality. Never had a problem with garage door prior. Only needed a garage door opener. Wanted to charge again 4 to 500.00 to take down and repair. Do not trust this man to do any work for you. He obviously is a piece man and eventually would want to replace the whole door. Poor scottsdale company needing $$$$$=.

Jeff just left after repairing my garage door. I stepped out to take my garbage out around 10pm and noticed that my garage door was only half way down. I could see it was off the track and decided to check thumbtack for repair companies. Fully expected to wait until tomorrow morning. Jeff called me within a minute (I was shocked). About 30 minutes later he was doing the repair. No extra charge for late-night immediate visit. With all the different types of home repairs and maintenance, have to say I've never experienced this level of service--ever. And the price was reasonable. Many thanks Jeff!

Very responsive and was able to repair my garage door same day. Through Thumbtack, they offered a free quote. But I was charged for the in-person quote after they did the work. I reached out about this and they credited the amount back to me with no questions asked. It was a positive experience.

Armand answered all my questions through this service, so I pretty much knew what we repairs were necessary, and whether or not it was worth repairing an 18 year old garage door. He could have encouraged us to repair it (most likely over and over again) but also showed us that a new motor unit would cost just a little more than the current repair, saving money in the long run. He showed up when he said he would, and after speaking with him a few minutes, I knew I had made the right decision. He explained everything he would be doing, and how long it would take --- and it went just the way he said it would. I couldn't have asked for anything more ;-)

Peter responded to my original request quickly and set reasonable expectations. We made an appointment that fit my schedule and he showed up on time and prepared to make the needed repair. Peter took the time to explain (in terms I could understand easily) what caused the failure (with our garage door opener) and what I should consider having done to help prevent another problem. What he said made perfect since to me so I had him do additional work (actually upgrades). Peter got the job done right and at a fair price.
