I was shopping around for a 20 person catered dinner for a group of us from out of town. We rented a VRBO house for a reunion/fantasy football draft. I called some local restaurants, used various websites and got about a half dozen quotes. We were looking for a set it and forget it buffet. I went with Jon (Carefree Catering) because he was very responsive, the menu was exactly what we were looking for, cost effective and he knew what he was doing. He didn't nickle and dime us for chaffing trays, delivery and when I found out that one of the guys had a change in lifestyle (he went vegetarian on us unbeknownst to me) Jon threw in a tofu option beside the Carne Asada and Chicken. Jon's staff was on top of it for us too making sure we were comfortable with everything and nothing had changed with our plan. They called me a couple of times leading up to dinner the day before and the day of. Mike showed up a half hour early to scout out the house and make sure there was enough room to set up. He put the appetizers out to the girls and then took care of us guys. The appetizers were great and instantly gone! While we ate the appetizers, he set up the dinner. 20 people ate the food and there was still a little left over chicken (it was perfect amount of food). The proteins were great, the veggies were fresh and the tortillas were warm. Mike put the churros in the oven on low and I told him to leave (because it was Friday night and he had better things to do) and to come back whenever in the morning to pick up the chaffing trays and serving utensils. He was apprehensive about doing that but I insisted he left because we could take care of ourselves and there was nothing he could for us while we ate. I tipped the man, shook his hand and sent him on his way. The next morning Mike showed up and asked how it went. I told him it went off without a hitch. He packed up and took off in less than 15 minutes. Jon emailed me Monday morning to follow up with me again. I told him that he and his team did a top notch job. I'd recommend these guys to anyone for this style of a dinner. 10/10!

After emailing and leaving unreturned voicemails for two caterers that I won't mention, I found Artistic Touch Catering. Immediately, I knew that I was in great hands because of our interaction. Chef Michael dove right in and was present every step of the way! Being a foodie, the food is a major part of my day and I didn't want the typical Hors d'oeuvre. Chef Michael called me and I explained my vision to him and he just got it. When I mentioned that I wanted out guests to have a foodgasm when they tasted it. After emailing and finalizing a menu, my fiance and I scheduled a tasting, which was no additional charge. When we arrived, Chef Michael greeted us personally. Although it was our first time meeting, you would have never guessed it! He has such a sparkling personality and has a level of professionalism that I haven't seen in a long time. From that very first moment, I knew that I could let go and trust that Chef Michael saw vision and after that first bite, I realized that not only did he meet it, he exceed it! His food is PHENOMENAL, the service EXQUISITE! The table setting was beautiful, which he had set up in the kitchen. Many caterers will sit you outside of their kitchen area and you're unable to actually see the food prepared and plated. They did everything in front of us and seeing him work with his staff and the level of respect that have for each other is admirable! Chef Michael has the experience and the passion and it's evident in everything that he does! Chef Michael, Nicole and the rest of the staff at Artistic has not only set the bar high, but also given me peace of mind! Thank you, Chef Michael, Nicole and the rest of your amazing staff! I can't wait to see you on my BIG DAY!

I have been a restaurant owner, caterer & food critic prior to retiring. I think I know a little bit about food & the business. So read my review. This company did a fabulous job! It was a last minute party & I wanted what I wanted when I wanted it how I wanted it! I am a my way type A person. They sent chef Ezra & server Roberta they were wonderful. The food was exactly what I wanted & how I wanted it. Delicious, served hot and plenty of it. We were late serving- people were held up getting to our location. No problem at all they took it in stride. You will pay up front don't worry they are honest. Very reasonable price, excellent quality food and as long as I can talk to Chef Steve because HE LISTENS I will have these guys again & again! great job guys thank you thumbtack

We had a party of about 30 people. Juan Pablo brought extra rice and beans for the kids, for whom he didn't charge, and catered to the vegetarians in the crowd as well. We were very happy with everything. And it was delicious.

Chef Vic did a fantastic job catering our Thanksgiving dinner for 30. He delivered a hot & fresh meal to our counter at 2:00 on Thanksgiving Day--not many caterers are willing to work on the holiday but Vic & his staff made sure we were taken care of & the meal was better than anything I could have accomplished in my home with days of preparation. It was definitely homemade and the price he gave us was more than worth it! The chain stores & grocery stores we looked into were slightly cheaper but a lesser quality by far & required all the heating up & transferring to dishes that makes Thanksgiving so much work to begin with. Can't say enough about how happy we were & our guests were all impressed as well!

We used Anna as a Personal Chef for a Girls weekend. We had a vegetarian, an auto immune diet, and the rest of us ate everything. She researched and adapted comfort food recipes to suit us all. Wonderful experience. Wonderful weekend!

We used Corporate Caterers for a Christmas dinner for our group of 100. We enjoyed the Caribbean chicken and steak combo with salad, rice, and chips. We had cookies and brownies for dessert. Everyone enjoyed the meal very much. The chicken was tender and juicy and the grilled steak was delicious. They provided two outstanding servers that were professional, helpful, and efficient. It was the easiest party I've ever thrown. They set up the buffet, served, and cleaned up. I didn't have to do anything. It was great. Inaie was wonderful from the first email she sent to bid for the party. She replied to all my inquiries quickly. She was very helpful as we planned the meal. I was really impressed that she called me the day of the party to confirm everything. I will use this company again! Thanks!

My guests have raved about the food for weeks now! Betsy from The Farmers Daughter was so incredibly sweet and professional during all of our interactions. We met her first for a tasting, and we fell in love with how important her business is to her and how she makes you feel like "its all about you". Jesse and I especially loved the fact that she only schedules ONE event a day!! We had her full attention for our wedding, and it showed in every aspect from the cocktail hour appetizers to the delicious reception meal. Betsy served us (Bride & Groom) directly and immediately which was so sweet!! The food we ordered for our 100 guest wedding included: -BBQ Meatballs = Our cocktail our app, and we heard "These are the best meatballs I've ever had" so many times. -Strawberry Spinach salad = Too die for!! My guests loved this and it was so fresh and vibrant it paired with the meal great! -Smothered Asiago Chicken Alfredo = The name alone makes my mouth water! Incredibly juicy and cheesy, huge hit! -Baked Mac & Cheese = I think I received a compliment from EVERY guest for the Mac & Cheese! -Fresh Steamed Veggies = Added another item for vegetarians! Good compliment to the food, and cooked perfect! We are so thankful Betsy was able to be a part of our wedding celebration, she really made our guests happy and Jesse and I wouldn't have changed a thing! Planning the food was something we expected to be difficult but Betsy made the experience stress-free, her food is incredible!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
