Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

We could not have hope for a better and stress free move, thanks to Larro’s moving team! I have move over 17 times, internationally too, over the past 20 years and my best experience of moving was with Larro’s Moving, by far. I could not recommend them enough!

TL;DR: The epitome of "average." Nothing exceptional and nothing terrible. The Adlai Atkins of moving services. ITEM SAFETY: Average amount of scratches in the furniture (not many, about 5 small ones--only complaint for scratches my wife had was they didn't cover the antique dresser in a blanket like the other movers so that got a few scratches. There were a few scratches on other furniture too, but you kinda expect a few small ones when moving). MOVE SPEED: Probably below average speed (6 hours for a one bedroom apartment, moving less than a mile, and there were some things we didn't have them move--e.g. storage unit and about 5 carloads of items), our movers two years ago did a very similar move in about 3 hours with very minimal scratches. The place we moved to this time is a bit trickier to move into (up an elevator and down a hall), so I cut them some slack for that (my guess is the better moving company we had before could have done this move in about 4 hours). I would say they didn't move intentionally slowly (at least when I saw them working) and didn't really hustle (which we were kind of used to), again just something of a below average speed from our previous experiences--not sure about industry wide, we may have just gotten lucky previously. PRICE PER HOUR: I believe price per hour is market-average for this area based on our shopping around. SUMMARY: Overall I wouldn't recommend them, but I also wouldn't try to dissuade someone from using them. You'll likely get your basic, run-of-the-mill moving service. Nothing REALLY disappointing, but nothing to recommend them either. We may have been spoiled by better movers on our last moves (who were unavailable, unfortunately). REPLY TO LARRO'S RESPONSE: The scratches were only noticed after the movers left. The previous movers we've had were only 2 men crews as well. The last guys moved us 1 mile from a 3rd story to the place you moved us out from, which is why I said they were very similar moves. Not saying we didn't like your service, it was just average, unexceptional. Could have been an off day for your movers, who knows.

I hate moving. I absolutely hate it. I especially hate it when I have to temporarily put things in storage for a move as well. I have to say, however, this was one of the smoothest moving experiences I have ever had. I had boxes that had breakables, and I had to give specific instructions for stacking boxes. Jose and Miguel were excellent. They were prompt, polite and were very hard working. They were 5 stars in every way possible. I have to do another move in August, and I am going to call Larro's Moving Services again for sure. I am going to be begging for Jose and Miguel to be the staffers who will be doing my next move too. Thank You for doing an excellent job on my move guys!

Mr Dominguez and wife were wonderful. They helped me with my small move that took less time than expected. They moved several boxes and other items from my residence garage to storage unit. I hope to work with them soon for another small move.

Working with Tony's movers was a great experience. They responded almost immediately to my search and they were helpful and friendly every step of the way. They moved my piano I've had since childhood and they took special care with the move. They were so easy to work with and I plan to call on them again.

It was a record hot day amid the pandemic (masks!), and our old place was on 4th floor with no elevator. Despite this adversity, the crew from Smart People Moving kept moving our stuff none stop, delivered everything to our new place in perfect shape in a very professional manner. We were deeply impressed - will use them again if we ever need to move again.

No hassle, professional service. Larro’s moved my entire apartment ahead of schedule with all the furniture in perfect shape. The pricing was more than I anticipated since an additional truck and mover had to be deployed, but all in all it was reasonable.

Excellent service! From the very beginning these guys were very professional and efficient. The move was 35 miles and they were able to load, move, and unload everything in under 4 hours. I was very pleased with how quick and hard they worked. The total cost was a little more than I was originally quoted but I feel that the price was more than fair. 10/10 I highly recommend Tony’s Movers.

The movers were highly professional and finished moving my 2 bed apartment after 4 hours only. I really liked how they assembled my furniture at the new house. The only thing I disliked is that the manager told me that I will pay a fixed price for the travel fee of 120$ and after the movers were on there way I discovered that I also need to pay for the way from the apt to the new house an additional 50$

Ryan and Josh were so great! They were so professional, fast, hardworking and went above and beyond. I will always use them for my future moves, and will HIGHLY recommend them to anyone else. They even came early, and were so careful and thoughtful when moving our belongings. It made moving such a breeze. If we could rate them more stars we would, and their price was incredible along with great customer service. Thank you so much!

My original moving plans fell through last minute and Matt saved the day. He got me all setup with 2 days notice for a long distance move. He and his crew showed up one time and did a great job. I couldn’t recommend him enough.
