Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

They were very careful with all the fragile furniture and items. I would definitely hire them again if I were to move.

The 17:7 Logistics moving team proved that moving does NOT have to be a highly stressful or expensive event. The team works very efficiently, offers a flat rate with no minimum, is insured, and extremely professional. The owner even offered to mount my television at no extra charge. I mentioned the company and the great service they provide to a few friends who are also moving soon, and each of them requested the contact info for 17:7 Logistics, which I gladly relayed. I highly recommend this company for your move. Thanks for reading.

A+++++ services and professionalism. I would use and recommend this company to anyone anytime. What I thought would be at least a 3 hour move turned into the smoothest 1 1/2 hour move (including travel) that I've ever experienced. Great guys with a great eye for detail. Thank you again.

I had spoken with multiple moving as well as moving with storage companies and J & G (John & Garrett) were straightforward and incredibly understanding, helpful, capable and kind. There are no hidden costs in their contracts unlike all of the others which I reviewed. No surprises whatsoever which is exactly how I like it. I had hired a four-person crew for Saturday and a three-person crew on Sunday. John and Taylor worked both days and busted a move in all of my chaos which truly meant the world to me. First time using movers so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I read mostly about professional movers online. We had discussed a flat rate of $180 for moving around 5 things(mattress, bed, two storage cubes, tv bench, mirror). I guess I did a lot of the work by taking the bed apart. We were done in about 50 minutes. I wanted to have 3 rugs taken down too. They were nice. Though I realized after that their rate was $80/hour. I gave them $200 total. I think professionals would have said that they were being paid for 2 hours and stayed the other hour to do whatever I needed in terms of moving( I don’t know, like... putting my bed back together?) so. They got paid for 2 hours of work while only working 1, and got 2 pretty good rugs out of it plus a tip. I’d go with professional movers be time for a similar price but more professional service. Nice guys though at least. But I wish they wouldn’t have reused the bags, especially with covid going on.

Don and Max conducted themselves with complete professionalism and positive attitudes. They helped a very stressful situation seem calm and manageable. We were uncertain at first how just two guys could move our fairly full small apartment, but they were knowledgeable and efficient and moved our furniture and possessions safely. The price was completely reasonable, especially considering that our stuff stayed intact and arrived exactly where we needed it, and we had a few strange wrinkles in terms of entrances and exits between our old and current homes.

I had such an easy move thanks to these guys. They communicated well and made the truck work for our needs. They were careful with our things and everything was done within the time that was promised. I would hire again without hesitation.

Let me start with the good: the owner was quick and responsive when I contacted him; the quote was also fair and quick. When the time had to be changed (on their end), I was contacted quickly and was even given an extra guy for loading the truck for the price of two to make up for the change in plans. When the three guys arrived, they seemed to be up to the task. I had hired them, initially, to move a piano and then changed it to load my U-Haul 26 foot truck. I had made it clear that I had a 3 bedroom home and a 26 foot truck. The booking was for 3 hours - it took them 5. I had 48 furniture pads - they used four of them. They also were not able to get all my stuff into the truck. This is not because I got the wrong sized truck - I had been evaluated by two moving companies and had measured EVERYTHING (including boxes) and input that information into a calculator online and it was a 26-foot truck each time. Upon arriving at my new location, I found out WHY there was not room in the truck to put in all of my furniture. Bad packing. They used precisely one of my 15 ratchet straps and none of the 8 tie down ropes, instead stacking my boxes at the front end of the truck and then shoving in the furniture without any planning. It is a good thing I had wrapped my own furniture with furniture wrap or the damage to my furniture would have been far worse than it was. As for the piano. I hired PIANO MOVERS. They did not show up with the equipment to MOVE an upright piano (which is what I informed them I had). Instead, they used MY furniture dolly (not the right size for my piano) and they banged it down the steps (they knew I had five porch steps) damaging the bottom edges of my piano. When I spoke with the owner, he did listen and asked for photos which I sent. Later I received a call from the foreman of the team who claims he had been fired by them. He was not clear if this was before or after my job, but he also stated in the call that he had been called to do this job 'for some fast cash' after he was no longer working for them. I had been told, by text, that I was getting their best. If this was their best, I would hate to see their worst. Maybe, for small jobs, this is a good company. For a real move in a 26 foot truck, this was a bad company.
