Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Everything went great with what they painted. They were fast, but good. The only thing is that they did not paint some items on top of the house that are now a different color.

Nelson did a wonderful job of painting the security doors and porch railings at my mobile home. While he was there, we discussed a couple of other items that needed painting and added those into the job. All in all, he did a great job of painting my doors and railings at a very reasonable price. I would hire Nelson again.

Rich Painting did an excellent job. The painting was perfect. They were ALWAY on time and very clean. Most importantly, I felt good about leaving them alone while I left the house. I made an error in the color I chose (my fault) and they came back out and changed the color at a minimal cost after the job was completed. I would definitely hire them again.

Although I didn’t choose LMG as my exterior painting due to my limited budget but I want to leave a review for him because he is highly knowledgeable about painting. He gave me a response right away, with great follow up without being pushy. He is very detail and what he offer is well valued and good quality products. I would def look for him with my next job!

Giovanni Filomeno owner/operation manager is a sweet talker like a pro & gentleman and that is how I got in trap, but as a painter and his assistant are horrible who do not have even basic knowledge of a professional painter. Their texturing and painting is bad, later he blames to paint of Sharon Williams and Behr whereas he preferred me to buy those paint. Promised to do proper texturing and hide any defects at time of quoting all are forgotten at the job later. To fix the bad work done & touch ups by him he wasted my 3 weeks and again did part of living room ceiling which had roller marks and within an hour told me he is done and made ceiling appear worse than earlier and blamed the paint. I have to hire another painter to do those repairs. All their attitude is to cut corners/short way and get money. I am very disappointed.. never him again. Please think many times before hire this guy...

I hired Wid to paint the interior of my house. He gave me a quote that I sgreed to. I asked if he had a contractors license he said he did and gave me the number of one. THe morning he was suppose to start i checked the license and it was a company out of Buena Park soi called the number on the CSLB website and talked to the owner. He stated he did not know Wid and did not have his permission to use the license; Wid talked me into using him without a deposit so I decided to give him a chance. He brought 2 helpers, They started the work and i noticed they were not preparing the surface for paint but just painting what was there. I spoke to him about it and stated it was the best he could do. I told him if he was not going to do quality work then do not bother and waste my time so he quit.Very unprofessional

Matthew and Crystal are very nice couple to work with. I was fortunate to get Gaspar and his partner as my painter. I was very impressed with their workers. They are punctual, very respectful, and extremely organized. I never seen workers that stacked their stairs and organized their equipment everyday after they are done. The finished paint job was great also. I got many compliments from my neighbors. We had cracks on our wood and stucco, they were able to fix it. I would say not perfect but for the price I paid, exceed the value. Price- I got quotes from 5 painters, their price range is in the medium range. Matthew and Crystal tried their best to save money for me which I appreciate a lot. The only thing is I forgot to do a sample paint test before start and I had to pay extra to repaint because the paint I chose was very different than the color book. Matthew was able to give me a reasonable price to repaint.

The overall process was stressful. I assumed by having Matt as a “project manager” (he doesn’t do any of the work, and is not on site) things would go smoothly. Unfortunately, it was the opposite. The projected time frame was 5-7 days, we did add a few things (3 hole patches and painting the banister) however the actual time was 12 work days (even longer if you count Sunday’s). They had full access to the vacant house so it took much longer than I had hoped. Matt was very delayed on responses (except when asking for payment) because of the longer time frame other contractors had to come in to do work, I confirmed with Matt several times of the days and times. When the floor guy showed up, none of the painters were aware they were coming...Matt never showed up to help fix the confusion (I counted...between emails, texts, and a phone call I told him 7 times the day they would be there)..fortunately the painters and floor guy were neighbors (small world) and were able to work with each other..with the floor guy even finishing up baseboard work for the painters. Also 2 rooms were painted the wrong color—I would have loved to have them fixed, but I was to the point where we were running out of time, so I settled and will have it fixed later. The biggest disappointment would be the paint on my brand new floors and carpet..I really wish they would have fully covered as the bid said they would. I pointed it out to Matt—but nothing ever got fully covered or fixed. I had the carpets professionally cleaned after they finished and there is still paint everywhere, he also added $90 to fix a 6” x 25” section of a wall after the backsplash was installed, and they painted over half of the grout, looks very sloppy—-pretty disappointed. Also there is paint on our new floor and inside our new sinks. As for the quality, we are satisfied with it. Of course there are certain areas I totally would have asked them to fix, but we just didn’t have the time—we had to move in.

William is soft spoken, conscientious, focused, and a very hard worker. He does good work at a fair price and he's fast. I hired him to do some exterior painting and then hired him again to finish doing some interior work we'd started. I plan on hiring him for a few more projects as well.

I hired Moses to paint a mural on my backyard stucco wall. He was very responsive and professional. The cost was very reasonable. And he accommodated additional requests without any problems. I loved the end result. I would definitely hire him again especially since he's a very honest and professional artist.

Richard and his crew are punctual, hard workers, and did a great job. The entire inside of our house needed painting over all new dry wall. The house has quirky cut out arches and decorative beams, so it was a big job! We had tried 10 different paint colors before Richard arrived, but we still lacked confidence in some color choices for certain walls. Richard was so helpful and patient! He could visualize how it would look from different room perspectives and gave suggestions, and it all turned out beautifully! Even when we asked for some last minute changes, Richard had a great attitude and did them. If you aren’t happy with something, he will fix it. He was the first to respond on Thumbtack, and he underbid other community quotes we had received. We are happy with their work overall, and feel it was a good value.

Richard is very professional, on time (that's a BIG PLUS in my book), and so far we are very happy. Richard is now finished painting our house, and look no farther, this is the guy to call. On time every day, any questions answered and he was very helpful with colors, putting in new rain gutters, etc. Always on time, or called if he was going to be late, and when he left our yard was spotless. I am so happy we found him. Very very satisfied!!!

Everlasting Painting did an excellent job with our mobile home and 2 sheds, plus a carport and awnings. Before it was a mash-up of ugly brownish colors, and now it looks like bright, clean, updated--like a new house. Jasper stone and Kendall green are the main colors we chose. We could not believe how different the old, stained carport and driveway awnings look! Everyday the crew was right on time and cleaned up everything after a day's work. They work quickly, professionally, and with great care. The quality of their work is fantastic! They won't be your lowest bid, but the workmanship and warranty are well worth the price.
