Ricardo was great. He was on-time,quick and easy to work with. He did several small jobs for us- touched up paint, replaced a faucet, fixed the bath tub drain, and fixed the closet doors. I'm glad we found him!

Matthew was so great to work with. He installed a butcher block countertop over my washer/dryer, (which had some complexities to it), hung some floating shelves, installed window hardware, etc. He has a good eye for detail, let's you know what his approach to a solution will be before doing it so you can be involved in the process, and he does a great job! I would definitely hire him again!

Vyron and his team did an excellent job for my hallway bathroom and molding and doors for three other rooms. They did a pretty awesome job in tiling our bath room and fixing the drain problem considering our tile is quite big. They are very polite and easy to work with and they do show cares to our home and was able to fulfill all our requests with high quality job. Vyron also came back to finish a bunch of small stuff and brought me the leftover paint I needed and two duct covers they accidentally sprayed when painting the door. This is true customer service and will definitely use again or recommend to friends!

Bill is a stand-up guy - he gave me an initial quote for my leaking bath tub, which I felt was high, so I asked him to come by and give an accurate estimate. He came the next day, and quickly explained that he was seeing other problems like the marble floors being uneven in color so an acid wash was included in the quote. After I explained I wasn't interested in that part, just the leaking tub, he gave me a very reasonable estimate. The problem we had in essence was a missing piece- he and I problem solved how we could fix the problem without the missing piece. Lots of ideas were flying around and he was open to trying out many things. We finally flipped the tub and took out the hose to implement one of the ideas and luckily the missing piece was still stuck there. That meant that we could have a full fix - and Bill did an awesome job in fixing it. I finally paid him more than he had asked for, which I felt was fair. It felt like I was doing a project with a buddy rather than a contractor. Bill was very easy going - would recommend him highly for future jobs.

Bogdan was a gift. He and his team installed ~2000 SQft of Bamboo Hardwood floors, a marble entry way, tile floor in the laundry room and bath, built a tile shower from scratch, matched and installed granite in a half bath and full guest bath, and repaired several small but important plumbing issues along the way. Bogdan was respectful and considerate of our priorities. He worked with us with patience, always checking in to make sure we were happy with the choices and installation. For example, he was able to create a seamless transition between the tile and hardwood and marble that made a big difference in how the flooring flows- no tripping on t-moulding ! I would happily recommend Bogdan for home improvement projects.

Richard Hynes is a very detailed professional. Upon meeting Richard I felt comfortable about the project. We originally wanted to order materials for the project and he had suggested to me that he would order any materials and provide us with the receipts. Luckily we let him order the material as it turns out the ones we wanted to order were undersized for our project. Richard came and seismically retrofitted our home. He also helped us on our kitchen and bathroom remodels while managing the project the whole way, hiring subs, coordinating between myself and subcontractors and achieving the results desired. Richards pricing was 20% cheaper compared to licensed professionals in the area. We are so glad to have had his help, as the previous worker we hired from thumbtack turned out to be unlicensed at a cheaper price, but ended up costing us a lot more money in the long run.

We hired Eli for a total interior renovation of our newly purchased home, including changing the layout of our first floor, adding a half bath, 2 full bath and 1 kitchen reno, hardwood floor, HVAC, roofing, repiping & electrical work. Total value of the project exceeded 140K, and lasted ~ 4 months. Eli & team delivered good quality work and kept us at our budget. He is a professional with high integrity. He was always responsive, provided helpful, thoughtful and truthful advice, and committed to his promises. Our journey together wasn't without hiccups, but Eli is someone you can trust as a partner battling any challenges together along the way.

We hired Juan immediately for a bathroom remodel. He was professional, confident and had a new contracting business after working for someone else for 15 yrs. He did our job very quickly. Most work was very good. He is not a finished carpenter, so when we didn't like something, he brought in a friend to do the final touches. He was responsive to correction and was committed to our satisfaction. Rates were fair.

I love Eli, Shmuel and the entire team at Lifetime Remodeling. We had an unexpected leak in the master bath that slowly destroyed our kitchen ceiling. They made an assessment, remodeled the bathroom, fixed the kitchen (and put in money saving/beautiful recessed lights), and left us very happy. When we encountered a problem with the plumbing, most other contractors would have taken advantage and hiked the price. But, they were so professional and everything was still finished on time and in-budget. (My friends tell me that never happens. So now I refer all of them to Lifetime.)

Sergey and the Wise Stage crew are the best contractor team I've ever worked with. Sergey was honest, responsive, and stayed on time and in budget. We had a complicated bathroom addition that included structural changes, plumbing, tiling, windows, electrical and more. They delivered a beautiful and high quality bathroom for us at a significantly lower price than other quotes we received. I give Sergey my highest recommendation. They are the best.

Pedro was fantastic! He gave us a reasonable quote for our kitchen backsplash and found out that we had to move a switch board. He was very responsive and kept in contact with us throughout the whole job since we were at work during the day. He was affordable, professional and communicative. We had him come back to install a light fixture as well. His work looks great and he works quickly. I would recommend him for any electrical or tile work again.

After months of searching for the right contractor to do our remodel of our master bath,we found pacific and the process and the way they handle and do remodels is genius, we just finshed with them about a week ago , and I am beyond happy with the finshed product. Moran and his team kept me informed and involed in the process the whole time , not everything little thing he came to me with , only decision they he knew i would want to make , I selected who i wanted to do the work, i knew everything up front , i wasnt hit with a bill after. Or change orders. and after a bad kitchen refacing( with another company ) that took months and tons of problems , I was kinda scared to countitue , but Pacific gave me my joy back , I will forever be thankful for the time and energy moran put into the project.

Remodel of bath rooms in a 1890's Victorian. Excellent custom work. Very study, robust and high end finish. More square and true than the original house. The place I'd prefer to stand in an earthquake. Great experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
