What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Evan's a fantastic personal trainer. I've been working out with him for about five months, and he's helped me make more progress on strength training than I ever had before. Evan developed a training program suited to my needs and was really attentive in helping me find the right gym and right equipment to train with on the days that I'm not with him. He also made some recommendations to make sure my diet was conducive to muscle gain. I've been working with Evan and his team for quite some time now and would definitely recommend them to anyone. I've worked with several trainers in the past at other gyms or studios but have to say this has been the best experience. It's obvious all of the trainers here know fitness and teh facility is top notch. It's a very welcome and low key environment. I've seen several people in their 80s train here which has been great to see! It's never too crowded and only personal training. I have had Personalized training from Evan and he has been outstanding. He tailors the workout routines according to your fitness level and also is very conscious of your injuries. I had a ACL surgery on my knee a couple of years back and he was very mindful of that and making sure that I don't injure myself. He also gave me good nutrition guidance which I did not have before. That along with the workouts have brought considerable change in my fitness level. He is very motivating and good at pushing you by the right amount. Anthony is an incredibly talented trainer (and great guy). For anyone who has ever been on the fence about an investment in personal training, let me tell you this; DO IT. After training with Anthony for 2 months my investment is paying off in spades in the way of improved fitness, muscle mass (I want to get stronger and bulk up), energy and confidence. I've tried getting in shape on my own and working with other trainers in the past (mostly unsuccessfully), but since starting to train with Anthony my experience (and results) have been very encouraging. Anthony is a truly superb trainer, and I’m continually impressed by his knowledge, professionalism, commitment to clients and amazing attitude. On top of that, God’s gym is a very special place. I’m lucky to have found a gym with such a positive, nonjudgemental atmosphere that at the same time has such a committed and experienced staff. I've been training with David for about 5 weeks now. I decided to train with David initially because I felt like he listened to my goals and he sounded like he had a lot of experience. He was the first person I interviewed but I remembered that he was the most humble and down to earth, and I had a feeling I'd be comfortable training with him. All the men trainers I interviewed talked to me like I had two brain cells, and I found David to be the most up front and honest. My goal is to lose weight, tone up and to strengthen my left shoulder for outrigger canoeing. So far, I am noticing a huge difference with my left shoulder. Its stronger and it no longer bothers me when I go paddling or perform certain exercises. Its still not 100% in strength but has gotten a lot stronger through training. All our sessions are pretty different and varied. I never know what to expect from David, which is good. I get bored at the gym because I love the outdoors, but David keeps it interesting. David pushes me when he thinks I'm slacking off, which often times, he is mostly right about.... I need someone to push me or I will slack off, which is probably a good reason to hire a trainer. David goes out of his way to make it work for his clients. He genuinely cares about his clients and loves what he does. I can tell by the excellent service he provides for his clients. My personal belief is that its important to practice what you preach, and David is a trainer that is in great physical condition, and knows what he is doing. I personally did not want to hire a personal trainer at the local gym that looked like they needed training themselves... I highly recommend David as a personal trainer. Due to his diverse background, I believe he would be a great fit for many.

I was slipping in keeping up with my personal fitness during the pandemic and so came on Thumbtack for the first time to find personal training. It was my first experience working out with a professional and Sunil was wonderful! It was very easy to schedule to meet, talk through my needs and then meet 2x/week to do exercises. I really enjoyed boxing and his first-principles approach to building my strength, and I am now in the greatest shape of my life! He was also very professional and flexible with my scheduling needs. Lastly he is also a wonderful cheerleader and always encouraged me to push on without making me feel bad. Highly recommend!

I first started my fitness journey after learning my body fat percentage had hit a personal high of 27%. It was then I decided to make health a priority in my life and start taking exercise and nutrition seriously. I signed up for Thumbtack and put out a request for a trainer near my home. John was one of the first to respond. We spoke on the phone about my goals and then scheduled a free consultation where we practiced a few basic movements and took my measurements. After our consultation, I committed to 20 personal training sessions. In each session, John tailors exercises with my goals in mind, and pushes me beyond what I think I'm capable of. He is always mixing up exercises to keep things interesting and my body guessing. John has me training with everything from kettle bells and cables, to rowing machines and TRX. In addition to the challenging workouts, John is consistent and reliable. He sends calendar invites for our scheduled training sessions and lets me know in advance if he needs to reschedule. It's now been nearly 18 months since we first started training. I've lost inches of body fat and gained confidence and energy. I look forward to our training sessions and even have my boyfriend hooked on couple workouts with John. :) I cannot recommend him enough for those ready to commit to a healthy lifestyle.

I hired Jackie initially because I liked his attitude: it was his confidence that I respected. To give you some context: I fired my last trainer because he had more attitude than I liked, so I warned Jackie during my complimentary phone consultation that I was extra and asked him if he could handle it. "I'm gonna say yes." I also liked how much time he took to listen to me about my fitness goals as well as why I was leaving my last trainer. He empathized with my less than excellent experience with him, which I appreciated. After hiring Jackie, I was very impressed with the template he made for me, illustrating the plan to meet my goals. I learned things that I've been trying to ask my last trainer, who wouldn't teach me. Like my singing instructor said, "Students don't come back to learn, they come back to check in." Even though I've been learning a lot from Jackie, I appreciate the experience I'm getting. Every time I meet with Jackie, he is right on time. He's also very accommodating in that he's willing to meet me at my preferred time, early on the weekend--who does that? I've never had a trainer train me at 6:00 AM on a Saturday or Sunday. One time, Jackie even trained me the day I needed an emergency session because I was so stressed. He's also very efficient with the time as I've noticed we would end exactly at the time we're supposed to--he has Impeccable timing. Not only is he accommodating in terms of scheduling, but I'm very grateful for how I don't have to buy in bulk. I understand the value and discounted prices of buying in bulk, but after doing that right before another shutdown at my last gym, I was traumatized. I like to pay as I go, so that my money isn't just sitting somewhere, when I can be making money off of it elsewhere. One time, I overslept during a 6:00 AM session and Jackie was So nice about it, he wasn't even upset! He just brushed it off and rescheduled for a time later in the day. What I especially like about Jackie is that he isn't a snake oil salesman. He doesn't make me train more than I want to or try to tell me that I need to workout more than once a week, especially when I do dancesport and rehearse all the other days of the week. He doesn't try to sell me supplements or tell me what supplements I should take. He also doesn't try to have me eat things I don't want to. What I like about Jackie's facility is how it's private: it's not open to the public, it's just for personal training clients, it's a fully-equipped gym, so only a limited number of people can be there at a time, which makes it safer and much more comfortable for me b/c of COVID. Also, no need to wait or fight for equipment! My favorite thing about the facility: the energy. Jackie and the owner (if no one else) don't mind my singing. I actually was discouraged to sing in my last gym, so I didn't feel accepted. One of my goals is to be able to strength train and sing opera at the same time, which Jackie is more than supportive of letting me do. I almost forgot: Jackie's very calm, which I need in my life, obviously, because I'm extra 🤣 Thanks for being awesome, Jackie!
