Jose helped us with a new irrigation project for our large yard. He was on time and polite and offered suggestions on how to complete the yard project. He also built a small retaining wall. He was very easy to communicate with over text messages and was always responsive to our requests. I will also be hiring him for our ongoing yard maintenance. I would highly recommend him for your next landscaping project.

We recently bought an older fixer upper and Jose has helped us with several jobs. He removed popcorn ceiling, texturized, put in new drywall and pot lights, did painting, installed floor tile, and is now tiling my new shower. He has a lot of overall construction experience and brings important knowledge to the job. His work has been quality and looks really nice. His pricing is very competitive and he is responsive and easy to work with. We had a few last minute delays on our end getting materials and he kindly rescheduled several times. We are going to work with him on some outside hardscape and fencing as well. We highly recommend Jose and his team. (I will add some photos soon)

Matt was great! Arrived on time and was very helpful. Although it turned out to be a much bigger problem than what I originally thought it was, and had to call in a plumber, Matt stayed to make sure the plumbers knew what had happened while he was there. I appreciated the time and genuine interest in making sure the issue was resolved! Will call you again if I ever do have a problem with the landscaping irrigation!

After my gardener broke off a pop-up sprinkler head when mowing yesterday, I reached out to Thumbtack for someone to solve this and other issues with my sprinklers. Greg responded to my plea almost immediately and after a brief telephone conversation, I hired him on the spot! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine my problems would be solved on the same day I sent a request! Greg replaced 6 pop-up sprinklers... all of which were very old. I also had an issue with tree roots lifting a water line. Greg explained to me what needed to be done and the cost for completion. After getting the 'go ahead' from me, he was back to work! I couldn't be happier with his service and work ethics, so I'll be keeping Greg's phone # handy for future problems. I will also be happy to recommend this gentleman to anyone needing similar service.

I requested several bids from different contractors to trim my trees in the Poway area. I have 8 full grown trees, plus 7 eucayptus trees along one side of my house, and 5 palm trees on my property (two of which are easily over 40 ft. tall). I hired Bernie because he is licensed and bonded, is knowledeable and experienced, and he offered me the most reasonable bid, overall, to do the work. Bernie brought in his crew and they worked for over 6 hours on a hot 93 degree Saturday to trim and clean-up all of my trees. Not only was their work outstanding, they did a great job of cleaning up my property before they finished. I would definitely recommend Bernie and his crew for tree trimming and other landscaping work!!

We found Omar and his crew down the street whom at the moment was doing an installation for a neighbor down the street. We liked the outcome of the installation so we decided to get in touch with Omar. He scheduled and appointment with us later that week in the evening to give us a quote and ideas in how we could improve our front and backyard. Omar provided a detailed 3D landscape design that really blew our minds out of the water. We were impressed with the design, so we went ahead and proceeded with the work. Omar executed the installation just as how it was planned in his design. We were totally satisfied with his work and his guys work especially in this heat. I would with no doubt recommend Omar and his crew to anyone with an interest for good quality work.

Gordon was prompt to respond, scheduled me in quickly, and followed through with excellent work. They were able to repair a bad pipe breakage along with several other repair/maintenance projects, including relocating a few sprinkler heads. My entire irrigation system was in need of TLC and he restored it to “good health”.

I hired Ramon and his crew to take down a leaning retaining wall and put up a new one. It was about 50 feet long and needed to be about 4 feet high. Also, they were building stairs into the hill. Also we asked him to widen our driveway by about 2 feet. All of this took them less that 7 days and came out perfectly. They even built in another step going up to the wall without asking me (we had discussed options of what I could do on my own). It was a great surprise. Very professional, very courteous and amazingly quick. Will use Ramon for and landscaping needs in the future.

Caleb and August are nice guys and were good to work with. They seemed VERY knowledgeable when I got the bid. For my yard, about 510 SQ, the bid with low end material was $3500, including some drain work. The time estimate was 2 days. I expected 3 days, to be honest. They listened to my concerns, particularly about avoiding smell issues with Artifical turf and dogs. They had experience in the field for 6-7 years. When the guys dug into my existing drainage system to make it work with the new material, they found it was not draining correctly. This meant that my 2 day project turned into a week-long disaster with ripped out walkway, dug out front and back yards. I appreciate very much that the guys want to do things right, and I don’t object to that. However, it was not possible to get a reasonable estimate of the cost overruns, so I was unable to make informed choices about the ongoing work. In addition, everything was quite a mess - which is probably always true of drainage digs, but it did impact my life more than I had anticipated when we started down this path. Plus side: I felt comfortable with Caleb and August - nice guys, very professional and polite. I had no concerns having them on site. They are knowledgeable and honest. Cons: Caleb was not able to give me an accurate estimate on the added drainage work, which meant the project went way over budget. My initial estimate of $3500 snowballed to $5900 when the work was done, although the scope of the work had changed. The project took longer (probably unavoidable) and was messier than I anticipated. I do notice a smell in the yard, and wasn’t happy with Caleb’s nonchalant response when I brought it up... never thought I would notice something after only a few days. The walkway is not correctly repaired, and will require some expert work I think. Some small items were not completed, such as moving rocks that were displaced.

He truly cares about his client's well-being without any manipulation towards extra-billing opportunities for himself. My wife and I sincerely recommend him highly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What's the best way to maintain your lawn?

Keeping a lawn lush and green requires consistent mowing, weeding, watering, fertilizing and more. If your lawn is particularly large, it may make sense to hire a full-service lawn care provider. Whether you take a DIY approach or bring in the experts, maintaining your lawn requires a range of tasks.

Plan to mow the lawn often, allowing it stay longer than may seem convenient — longer grass is healthier grass. The general rule is to cut off no more than a third of the grass blade. This helps prevent damage to the lawn as well as keeping weeds from taking root. It’s also important to remove any weeds, then prevent new ones from growing. In spring, consider spraying a pre-emergent herbicide on your lawn to prevent crabgrass and other types of weeds from sprouting from seed. During other seasons, broadleaf weeds like dandelions can be pulled by hand or sprayed with weed killers. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, allowing the sun to help dry the grass. Make sure to thoroughly soak the lawn so that the water penetrates several inches into the ground.

Lawn care also requires feeding; look for a mixture of fast- and slow-release fertilizers that include nitrogen. Some lawns also benefit from aeration, which creates small holes to let air, water and nutrients penetrate the grass roots. Although most homeowners can manage these tasks on their own, a full-service lawn care company can handle them on a regular schedule, taking the guesswork out of maintaining a beautiful lawn.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you look after your lawn?

Having a beautiful lawn doesn’t just happen by magic. A multi-pronged approach to lawn care will result in a healthy lawn that will have your neighbors green with envy. The national average price for multi-service lawn care ranges from $40 to $50. Whether you tackle the project yourself or hire a lawn care professional, looking after your lawn requires consistent work. A baseline of lawn care is keeping your grass mowed and your irrigation system working properly. Fertilizing plants and grasses, as well as trimming and pruning foliage, may promote the health of your plants and lawn. Many lawn care pros offer different packages with varying monthly fees depending on your lawn size and the services you desire. Here are a few examples of average lawn care prices:

  • 1,000- to 2,500-square-foot lawn: $60-$90 per month
  • 5,000-square-foot lawn or larger: $110-$150 per month.
    • Includes lawn maintenance, cleanups and irrigation repairs. The company trims shrubs, pulls weeds, blows out yard waste, fertilizes and does minor irrigation repairs.
  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
  • 8,001- to 15,000-square-foot property: $35 per week/$140 per month.
  • 15,001- to 20,000-square-foot property: $40 per week/$160 per month.
    • Includes mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.
