Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Pete's training was "Training the Trainer". It was amazing! He's punctual, and very professional. The guidelines and notes that Pete provided was very helpful. He also demonstrated how to train. I agree with Pete that it is always better that the owner of the dog train so that the bonding is better. With just two hours of training, my dog has already picked up few commands. Thank you Pete! This dog trainer was non responsive in getting back to me. Perhaps Majyk is an excellent dog trainer but the lack of follow up was not great. If you have no time or interest for your services at least communicating that would be appreciated.

Pete has a very calm and good manner with the dogs and so much useful instructions for training, which help manage the behaviors. We really like his kind, but stern approach with repetition vs. other trainers who are very aggressive physically and verbally with the dogs. Pete't training style fits well with our personalities as dog parents. We will start putting into practice what we've learned and plan to use Pete's services again for additional training advice.

Excellent Trainer. We covered a major behavioral issue with our Yorkie in one session. The Yorkie's issue was related to other dogs, and we were able to address the issue at his facility since the trainer has other dogs onsite. He knows his stuff!

Pete gave us a great starting point to start training our dog with behavioral problems. We started working on impulse control, feeding rituals, and commanding her attention in a stressful environment for our dog.

Pete came to help a first time dog trainer (myself) with my new rescue dog. Just as he says is needed for success he was calm cool collected. He gave a lot of ritual information to help with the relationship of me and the dog. She already does better on walks (yes same day) with using the prong collar. We worked with her on place and the same day she is using the spot to relax which has made her less anxious! Very knowledgable and is straightforward on how to train your dog and most importantly yourself! We are key to our dogs success.

We had a 2 hour training session with Pete for our 7 year dog that was developing some bad behaviors. He was really insightful. He comes with some great theories - and was good at showing us how to implement them with our dog during the session

My Newfypoo pup Jelly Bean is a handful, especially considering I have never had a dog before. I was fortunate enough to stumble on John Vinton's site, after being dropouts from Sirius group puppy training. His technique is unique as he does not advocate stuffing the dog with never ending treats. Instead, consistent reinforcement of commands accompanied with appropriate overwhelming praise when deserved. We're only 3 lessons in. I am so proud of my Bean, especially when compared to other dogs we meet on our walks. We both still have a lot to learn and with the help of "A Better Dog Trainer" I know we'll be successful.

I had taken my 4 month German Shepard in to be evaluated and I have to say she was in as much enjoyment as I was with the place. I would recommend anyone who wants to get their dog trained to go here. Narada is a great trainer as well. Is willing to go above and beyond.

Our session with Pete was an excellent sanity check for our training efforts with our rescue puppy Miles. Our dog didn't have any major behavioral issues, but needed some work on leash etiquette and recall. He focused on training us - i.e. taught us how to fish. :) I appreciated his common sense tips, detailed training manual, and product recommendations.

Emily has been working with our dog Pepper since she was a puppy. We recently hired Emily again to train Pepper now that she's in adolescence. We hired another dog trainer and weren't in love with his style. On the other hand, we really love Emily's approach to dog behavior. She breaks down the reasons why dogs may do things, gives us amazing tools to manage each step, and keeps it fun. We wouldn't have been able to get through Pepper's puppy phase without Emily and I am certain I will say the same once we get on the other side of adolescence. She's been a great resource and we're so glad we found her on Thumbtack!

This trainer really knows what to do! She also offered us hope that one can , indeed , teach an old dog new tricks, and then proceeded to do exactly that ! Two sessions down, and thanks to MAj I am optimistic about my dog for the first time ! Her techniques are amazing ! Thank you, Maj!

My puppy just loves Emily and is responding quite well to the training- but most importantly she’s training me on how to continue our work to keep the number of sessions at max value while adhering to the budget we set forth together. On a personal level she is a delight to be around and really has a special connection with my dog.

recently adopted 10 lb dog with little known training. Jess was able to track me and Molly with basic walking rules. I look forward to our next session with Molly and me feeling more secure.

Mali you are so detailed orientated and your presentation and punctuality was impeccable. I was so impressed when I was reading the presentation personalized sheets specific to Joeys needs. It made it easy for us to understand what to do while continuing to train Joey. Joey, thanks you for the yummy treats that you gave him during the 30 minute basic training. I would highly recommend Mali for anyone that wants or needs a private dog trainer.

I have a puppy liking biting and less controllable. He often become crazy and starts to run and bite when getting excited, which annoyed me a lot. Stacey total changed this! She taught me the “rules” in the dog world and how I could become the leader of my dog. Also she found out how trainable my dog could be and shaped him many good habit. All happened in our first training session! Amazing! I would highly recommend her.

Maj is the absolute greatest! She worked with my dog zeke and I for about 2 months (8 sessions) and I really cannot thank her enough for all that she’s done for us! As a first time dog owner, I knew what I was getting into and was well educated on positive reinforcement training...once Zeke became my reality, it seemed like everything I knew was thrown out the window. Puppies are high energy and require so much attention. Working a full-time job, I needed to find a way to balance both work and Zeke. Luckily, I found Maj! I have learned so so much about the correct way to train a puppy. She set me up for success and made our training sessions fun! This has translated to forming a strong bond with my 4-legged son :) I 100% would recommend Maj to anyone that is looking for dog training in 😊 her pricing is fair, she is always on time and communicative, provides homework to further progress and really cares about her clients! MAJ IS THE BEST!

Tierney is an absolute godsend! She got our Sophie over some pretty amazing hurdles. Sophie had recently become very aggressive on walks to the point of being uncontrollable! We were worried we would never be able to walk her safely again! With Tierney's help we are now able to have calm and enjoyable walks. We loved Tierney so much we immediately took our new puppy to her, and he is also making amazing strides wth Tierney! I would recommend Unleash The beast-Dog Training for wild dogs and It's amazing owner Tierney to anyone needing help with their dog!

To put it simply, Maj is the perfect dog trainer and I am so happy that I hired her. I recently moved to the city after living in the central valley with Eva (my dog) for about 3 years. She went from seeing maybe one other dog a week to over 10 a day and was showing some leash aggression. She's a very active dog, so I knew she needed lots of exercise, but going on walks was getting to be really stressful (I was seriously getting worried she would attack another dog). I did lots of research online and tried some of the methods I learned, but I just couldn't seem to calm her down around other dogs. That's when I decided to contact Maj. We started our lesson by walking around the block, intentionally walking close to other dogs so Maj could see how Eva reacted. One thing I really appreciated was that she pointed out lots of subtle signs that I had never noticed before that hinted that Eva was about to freak about: tail slowly raising, accelerating to walk a little farther ahead of me, ignoring the leash a little more. After pointing these all out to me, we went over some techniques to get Eva to pay attention to me even when other dogs were around. Honestly, after just that 15 minute walk and those techniques I was already feeling optimistic. We then went into the basement of my apartment building (quietest place in the building) and went over some obedience training ("look", "yes") that I could use while on the walk to get Eva to quickly break her focus from other dogs and look at me. During this period, I really appreciated how descriptive Maj was when explaining exactly why Eva was showing certain behaviors. Everything just made so much sense. Ultimately, I can't recommend Maj enough. Over the course of just an hour and half I went from being scared to leave my building with Eva, to looking forward to spending time together again with my dog. I walked her tonight and I already see improvement!

Maj really knows her stuff. I'm glad she's willing to work through things that are most convenient for me. It helps me focus on what I'm trying to accomplish with my dog, rather than all the other factors that prevented me from getting help to begin with (scheduling, fees for traveling, methods of communication, etc.). I chose her because of her background with rescues, years of experience, and number of people who have worked with her--and what they said. I have some experience with training my dog, and sometimes I have to be assertive and push through the explanations but I understand that Maj works with a lot of first timers. I'm also glad she is willing to skip the beginner steps and meet me at my level so that we don't drag out lessons my dog and I don't need.

My dog is 3yrs old and has fear aggression towards basically everything other than our family. I've worked with other trainer for about a year and I felt like we had come to a dead end and I was getting frustrated with it. Maj reached out to me and I'm so glad I decided to work with her because she was just what I needed. She have lots of experiences and knowledge. She is very responsive and tries to help in anyway. We only had one session and my dog is doing much better already. I'm very excited for our next meeting!
