After doing research, I decided to give Raquel a shot at training my dog, Cali (and my girls and I). Cali is a rescue, possible Wheaton Terrier mix of some sort. She is basically good, but barks at the door, in th3e backyard, and shows aggression toward other dogs while on walks, which was making walks miserable. Basically, I wanted a dog who would obey basic commands and be polite. I have previously enrolled in and completed dog training classes. This had some benefit (mostly Sit and Stay), but took 10 Saturdays to complete, and it seems the training (especially on leash) hasn't stuck. I'm sure that has a lot to do with my girls and I being inconsistent. I learned from Raquel how a dog thinks, which is so beneficial to know. The lessons learned in 4 hours with Raquel have been WAY more beneficial than those 10 Saturdays in doggie school. Her methods are SIMPLE, so if you need a ton of information and homework to feel you've gotten your money's worth, look elsewhere. I have given this 5 days before reviewing, just to see if all this dog training stuff really is as simple as she taught us. Guess what?? It is! Cali is still learning to be polite on the leash. This will take time, because she's established some very bad habits. However, there is already GREAT improvement. As far as barking at the door, as soon as she even thinks about it, I tell her "quiet" and "go back," which she obeys immediately. Raquel actually trained her to do this while she was here, and it has stuck. So awesome! A word about the e-collar. This is used as a training tool. My dog definitely needs it, especially on walks. In the house, she is already not really needing it. It feels like a vibrating cell phone. It does NOT hurt; it's simply a distraction. Once you hire Raquel, you'll learn the art of distraction (think about how you distract a 2 or 3 year old to avert a breakdown... dogs are the same way.) The e-collar has been amazing and we don't even use it very often. I love my dog like she's my baby and would never do anything to harm her. I want her to be confident, well-behaved, and happy. I truly believe proper training gives her (and me) these gifts. So open your mind (and be prepared to spend a pretty penny) and hire Raquel. You will not regret it.

DeeCee was great! She came to me in Malibu and worked with my puppy, Milo, for 90 minutes. She taught me how to be more firm but also incredibly loving with my puppy and how to prepare him for service dog training. She affirmed what I did right and corrected what I did wrong and did an altogether great job. Milo loved her too! Would recommend! Many thanks from us!

John is calm, confident and professional. He is amazing! Dog training is as much about training the owners as it is training the dog. He explains how dogs think and how we communicate with them. Best money I've spent in a while. I'd highly recommend this trainer!

Here was our situation: We had a 4 year old male husky. We rescued an 8 year old male German shepherd. The two did not get along. The German shepherd had a lot of fear aggression from a lack of socialization and past abuse and would try to bite the husky. We started looking for a trainer and we found Duane. On day one, Duane helped us socialize the shelters a little by taking him in the backyard with the husky. We saw progress even by the end of the lesson. We paid for 3 lessons with Duane, and after the third he offered to come help us a fourth time, for which he did not charge us. As a result of Duane's guidance and training, the shepherd has been able to socialize with other dogs at our local dog park, and now we are able to have the two dogs inside the house together. If you're looking for affordable, quality dog training, give Duane a call. You won't be disappointed. Thanks, Duane!

I would highly recommend Cassidy's services. She truly understands dogs and their behavior but more importantly understands human behavior. She helped me to see how my actions were affecting how my dog reacted. Since making the changes she recommended training my dog has become much easier and enjoyable for both of us.

Stefanie has trained 4 of my dogs over more than 10 years and I cannot sing her praises enough! She has true compassion for all animals and has rescued and found homes for countless number of dogs. She has a real gift of "talking" to the dogs -- she can read their personalities and they bond with her. She is experienced, professional, strict but kind and understands all breeds -- purebreds and mixed. She assesses the situation, background, needs, etc. of the owner/s as well as the dog and adjusts her training method accordingly. Above and beyond her dog training skills, Stefanie is a warm, principled, caring person. I consider her a friend as much as my dogs' trainer.

Steve Welch of K9 Dog Training came to visit us and spent a great deal of time detailing his program and how it works. Steve and his associate, Wendy, were friendly, kind and considerate. As a result we let Babe, are Boston Terrier, and deeply loved little girl go with them to Training. We know she is happy and safe and in caring hands. I feel certain she'll return with some good lessons learned.

Love Ur K9 is the best decision I ever made for my Mini Australian Shepherd, Camo. I cannot say enough how good they have been to me, and my dog. I am forever grateful for everything they have done for us. Here's the full story: I heard about Kevin through a friend who had a great experience after her dog was trained by Kevin. I was looking for a dog trainer who could not only help with obedience training my three month old puppy, but also work on some dominance behavior issues. I had read so many books on raising a puppy, and also grew up in a family with many dogs so I thought I knew what I was doing. Our first meeting with Kevin was in our home, where he met Camo, and got a better understanding of our home setup and routines. It is also where Camo was comfortable and displaying some early signs of dominant behavior. Kevin immediately picked up on this and made some changes to the way in which we interact with Camo. We started puppy behavior and obedience training that same week. Kevin also trained us as handlers, so that we understood the training and could repeat it at home, that way Camo would not be able to default back to bad behaviour. When Camo was 9 months old, we heard that we had to move to Australia for my husband's work. There was no way that I could make the move without Camo. Australia is extremely strict with importing pets, and theres a six month intensive preparation of vet checks, and massive costs involved before dogs are allowed to enter the country. We had to leave two months after we heard the news so we had to make a plan for Camo in the meant time. Kevin took Camo into his home for four months, looking after him, doing service dog training with him, and helping with many arrangements to get Camo reunited with us. Camo joined us in Australia in June and I am elated to have my best friend back by my side once again. He is still full of personality, but by far the most obedient, trained and socialised dog in Melbourne!!! THANK YOU Love Ur K9, from the bottom of our hearts!!!

Marco is currently working with our 2 labradoodle puppies (11 wks old) and he is amazing. The puppies are responding to all their new commands and love the positive feed back training. I've had dog trainers in the past for older dogs and Marco's method is far superior to any other trainer we have used. I would highly recommend him.

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

LeNai is a professional through and through and knows dogs amazingly well and can handle every size of dog. Walking, training, playing - she is a pro! But what really makes the difference for me, is that she is treating your dog like it is her own. She gives my Sasha so much love and helps her overcome her separation anxiety. She gives updates every day, and I can 100% rely on her. When I go on my trips, I have 100% peace of mind leaving my dog with LeNai.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
