My wife and I live very busy lives with demanding work schedules. When we are not working we love to spend time with our family and entertain. I am a bit of a foodie as is my wife, so when we entertain the meals must be perfect. I am very impressed with Lilian's ability to deliver the highest quality cuisine in a variety of nationalities. She has prepared French, Moroccan, Thai, Asian fusion, Mexican fusion, and Mediterranean to name a few. She has served us at an intimate table of four to catering fundraisers for over 300 people. In addition to the fabulous food, Lilian has a friendly inviting personality and always has a smile on her face. If you hire Lilian as your chef, you will not be disappointing!

I have nothing but great things to say about the service, quality, and overall delivery of Best Mobile Chef. From beginning to end, Shawna was very attentive and professional. As a bride, I can honestly say that planning a wedding is one of the most stressful experiences in your life; however, Shawna did an amazing job at making sure I was not stressed or worried when it came to the catering, bartending, and cake. She made sure that each and every need was met, and she even offered her assistance with cutting our cake even though that was out of her services. We sat down and went over every detail, and Shawna made sure to keep in touch throughout the way to maintain things and to make sure that we were on track with everything. Finally on the day of, the food and setup was more than what was expected. Our family and friends spoke so highly of the food and service. Shawna and her team was absolutely phenomenal! My husband and I would definitely book Shawna and her team again for a large dinner, and even desserts. We are both forever thankful and grateful!

La Mexicana Catering did a great job at our event. Before the event they were easy to work with, answered questions quickly. The food was wonderful and plentiful. Most of my guests were able to take leftovers home. The price was great and fit within my limited budget.

Lavonne was very responsive right from the start of the planning process for my sisters birthday party celebration. She helped me come up with a menu that everyone would enjoy and then flawlessly executed the day of the party. She fit right in with my family and friends and I would highly recommend her for anyone looking for a caterer.

Stacy and team were awesome. The food and experience were fantastic. I was originally impressed with the sample menus and that is why I chose her. We picked what were our favorites for the party and she added a few surprises. Everyone (@50 people) loved what she made. We have been at other catered events and have seen things go uneaten and have had disappointing passed appetizers. Hers were all devoured.

Christine McMaster is a hidden gem of the culinary and catering world! She was the caterer last year for a wedding I attended and I was most impressed. She completely handled an amazing dinner for 21 people with delectable Indian and Middle Eastern Food; taking care of the shopping, the food preparation, the service and cleaning up of the food and leftovers. I was so impressed that I asked her to cater an Indian Meal for 75 people! Since it was a much larger undertaking, we provided theingredients, but Chris oversaw every aspect of the preparation of a 5 course meal, and remained calm, organized and personable throughout. The food was absolutely delicious. I would absolutely recommend her for any catering needs you might have - you would be lucky to get her!

We had a phenomenal Thanksgiving Dinner prepared and delivered by BAPS catering. We were expecting about 20 people for our holiday dinner and BAPS catering delivered a wonderful meal that everyone loved. The turkey was moist, the vegetables, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and pumpkin cheesecake were delicious. Needless to say, we had enough food to satisfy everyone and still had some great Thanksgiving leftovers. We would definitely recommend BAPS catering for everyone who wants tasty food cooked just the way you like. Thanks for helping us make our holiday dinner such a success!

Stephani did a wonderful job. We all enjoyed the tea party set up & the foods she prepared! I hosted the party; another person paid for it, so I cannot answer to Value, however, my guess is it was very good, as that person told me she & her sister, Staci were GREAT to work with! Linda H

Flavor Affinity and Chef Baker came highly recommended by a co-worker of mine.  I decided to use this service because Chef Baker was not only the first to respond to my email,  (I sent out the same email to 3 private chef/caterers) but had the most value built into his quote. He had pre-built packages but ultimately allowed us to design the whole menu! We chose a 4 course option and could not have been happier with the food, ambiance, and decor.  Lastly, as the party began to wind down, I noticed that almost the whole service area and glassware was cleaned up without anyone noticing. It was a truly impressive evening and Flavor Affinity comes highly recommended from myself and surely anyone who has had the pleasure to work with them.

We hired Brian to cater heavy appetizers for a holiday cocktail party we hosted. Having never hired a caterer before I didn’t know what to expect outside of what my budget was. Brian was a pleasure to work with, suggesting a great initial menu based on our preferences and budget and then editing it as needed. He responded promptly to all my questions, reached out exactly one week ahead of our event for final headcount and to discuss and assured me he would make it a great event. On the day of, he and his lovely fiancé Stephanie arrived exactly on time and began set up and plating. Brian’s presentation was flawless and his flavors were delicious. So many of my guests complimented the food and several asked for his contact info. At the end of the night, not a single morsel of food was left! I couldn’t be happier with how our first catering experience went and would definitely hire Brian for future events.

I have to say the value, work quality and professionalizam of Indigo Cafe has gone beyond expectation. They were on time, on budget and communication was flawless. I hired them for a corporate luncheon to impress my higher ups and where I failed they succeeded. Very courteous and responsive to my clients needs. If a plate needed to be cleared or water to filled their friendly staff was on top or it. Thanks Tiffany and Rick. See you again soon with my next event.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

          • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
          • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
          • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
          • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
          • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
          • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
