We have found Alisa through Thumbtack based upon the reviews and were extremely pleased with her Catering Service for our Wedding. Alisa and her team arrived early, set up the tables and had the venue smelling wonderful with all of the food she cooked. Not only did her and the team assist with the dinner service, but they also cleaned and packed away all of the rental settings. This was extremely beneficial and gave both us and our friends additional time to enjoy the day. If anyone ever needs Catering Services in the East Bay, she is the best and has the most reasonable prices! Greg-n-Greg

Boris was AWESOME! We didn't necessarily have an event or catering, we were just beginners who wanted to get a good foundation for learning how to cook. Boris was extremely enthusiastic and answered all of our questions. He taught us numerous knife and cooking skills that we can use moving forward. Ingredients weren't overly complicated. He made multiple dishes for us out of a single chicken. The food turned out AMAZING! I highly recommend Boris for any of your cooking or catering needs. He is very professional and a true expert.

TFTS was very easy to work with and the food was amazing. They were the only ones who submitted a proposal that had a theme idea that went above and beyond what the others submitted. Will definitely work with them again in the future!

David and Cowabunga Barbecue recently catered my wife and I's wedding for 150 people! They did a fantastic job! Many people have told us since how much they enjoyed the Mac and cheese and pulled pork and how it was the best wedding food they have ever had. David is very professional and super easy to deal with which is invaluable when you are planning a wedding and dealing with so many vendors. We used his full service package which was very reasonable for what it was and made our life very easy knowing the food was "handled" Hands down I would use cowabunga bbq again for any event or wedding. 5 stars!

Nick catered a housewarming party for me. He was very responsive when I reached out to him and was very helpful in offering suggestions for food that would work best for the environment. We ended up with a buffet of casual finger foods. Lumpia, crab cakes, BBQ pulled pork sliders, meatballs and MORE. Nick delivered the food to my house in time for the party and everything was delicious. I heard a lot of praise from my guests. I had some food left over that my husband and I ate for a few days after the party, and we loved every bite! We were actually sorry when we finally ran out! I highly recommend Nick and Famous Creations for catering.

My experience with Kincy Catering was nothing less than excellent. The food and menu options were endless, I hired Kincy catering for my daughters 16 bday, the sliders and homemade lemonade were just a few of my guest favorites. I will only use Kincy’s Catering.

Wanting to learn to cook lower calorie food that still had great flavor, I hired Zac to come to my home and teach in our kitchen. My husband is our (excellent) cook, I am not a cook (at fifty-something years old), presenting a bit of a challenge. Rising to the occasion, Zac planned a meal that read like the menu at French Laundry! Panic! There was no way I could prepare this meal. Zac said...Way! He met me at Sonoma Market to introduce me to fresh everything, not packaged anything! Back at our kitchen, the magic began and WOW! Probably one of the most delicious dinners I've ever had at home, and certainly rivaling 5 star restaurants. Our cooking and dining experience was nothing short of superb and better yet, not a dollop of butter or a drop of cream was used to create the fantastic soup, salad, and complex main course. Through Zac's exceptional knowledge of herbs and spices, he taught me to create extraordinary flavors to enhance the food, and not over power it. It was a brilliant evening of cooking! Zac is easy going, yet very assured, and his ability to communicate is second to none. Remarkable job by a talented young man who will be continuing to educate us in the kitchen and most assuredly catering events for us. Bravo, Zac...Bravo!

We hired Laurel to cater a date night dinner for two. Her partner Matthew came over to my apartment in San Francisco and cooked a great 4-course dinner for us. Everything was delicious and went off without a hitch. (Just be sure to communicate with Laurel about timing and kitchen equipment, since although they do prepare the food beforehand, there is cooking that will happen on-site.) We'd be happy to hire Laurel again!

I couldn't have asked for a better experience having Chrysalis Catering working my son's graduation party. Tameeka had great communication skills. She always kept in contact with me before and during the event. She was professional and attentive to the needs of the party and made sure the meal was prepared on time. My guests were also impressed with Tameeka and asked for her card to cater their future events. This was the first time I used this app and my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. Chrysalis Catering is top notch.

We recently hired Eileen and her staff with What's Cookin to cater a backyard luau party. From beginning to end, she was very easy to work with. The bottom line is that her food was AMAZING! What a talent!! Our party guests raved about the dishes she prepared. Since the party was themed, we worked together to come up with the perfect selections for a summer luau. Her staff that worked the party with her were super friendly and smiley, professional, and instinctively knew how to "be there" for our guests needs. As the hosts of the party, my husband and I were able to focus entirely on our guests, which is exactly what we were looking for. We were all very impressed with everything, and are certain we found our new favorite caterer! Thanks Eileen and your staff for a job well done!

I loved my experience with this chef. On short notice he was able to deliver on all my expectations. He was personable and i felt as if i knew him forever. His qaulity of food preparation and presentation shows his passion of catering food and baked delicacies. Everything this chef touches resonates through his personality. I would highly recommend this chef and chef wife. Great people and company!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
